Subject: RIBC 2006: draft discussion
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Tue, Mar 07, 2006, 17:40
The draft will be activated shortly, although the clock will not be turned on until Friday, March 10.
Starting on Friday morning, we will institute a 6 hour clock. The clock will pause between 11pm and 7am ET. If you time out, the draft will move on. Skipped picks can be made up at any time thererafter.
If your turn arises and you still have an outstanding skipped pick, I will probably move the draft on to the next picker. If we get well ahead of pace, I may relax that stance. But hopefully it will not become an issue. This also means that people on the turn have a single clock period to make their first pick, or both will be skipped.
Although the clock will be set at 6 hours, we cannot make satisfactory progress if many managers use much of that allowance. We need to average a little more than one round per day, so please do your best to keep up the pace. If we fall behind, managers who are chronically slow may be put on an shorter clock.
We will use this thread for logistical communications, to help others anticipate potential delays, to recruit someone to accept a queue, to announce or solicit trades, to coordinate changes in the clock for weekends, etc. Please check this thread regularly throughout the draft, as we will rely on it as the primary means of communication among RIBC managers.
Established draft etiquette is that no undrafted player names should be mentioned either here or in the rationale threads, and in the event of an infraction, should be edited out.
After two rounds have been completed, a separate draft rationale thread will be started. We will try to keep that thread on a 2 round lag. Therefore, after you make your pick in round 3, please immediately post your round 1 pick rationale, and so forth. I usually draft my rationales as I make picks, so that all I need to do when the time comes is copy and paste. I recommend that approach for everyone.

I should add that you may draft a player even if he is not currently listed on Yahoo. In that event, you will have the first rights to claim that player when he is listed, as long as you preserve that roster slot for him.
Once the draft is completed, you will no longer be able to protect a slot for any unlisted player. At that point, unlisted players will only be available through the standard waiver/free agent process.

KKB, I see that the queue/designated picker process has been enhanced. Can you elaborate on the changes?
In particular, if someone is set up as a designated picker, when and how can they access the queue? Is it solely via email, as before? Or is the queue now available at the draft site? If so, is it always viewable by the DP, or only when the queuer's pick is due?

Guru, you are correct, it has been enhanced quite a bit. Here's the details...
QUEUE MANAGEMENT Queue Management now serves a dual purpose. It gives you a way to line up players you want, but this can be done both for your own purposes (a cheat sheet) and for your Designated Pickers. All you have to do to add players to your queue is go to Queue Management, find the player in the list of names, and add them. After you have added players, you can arrange them using the "Move Up" and "Move Down" links for each player.
There are NO more emails sent out for queues! Everything is handled through the On the Clock system now.
DESIGNATED PICKERS Designated Pickers will no longer receive email queues. A manager's queue will now be stored in the On the Clock system and displayed as a list drop-down instead of the "Player Name" search box for their Designated Pickers and the draft admin.
However, Designated Pickers will only have access to a manager's queue if the manager makes the queue "Available." You could very well be set up as a Designated Picker for someone and if they do not have a queue or do not make it "Available," you won't have the list of players to work from. If a manager's queue is "Unavailable," it is the equivalent of them storing a cheat sheet in the system. The list will be available to them, but not to their Designated Pickers, nor the draft admin.
AVAILABLE/UNAVAILABLE As I said above, if your queue is "Available," then your designated pickers and the draft admin will see your queue list instead of the player search box when it's your turn to pick.
If your queue is "Unavailable," your designated pickers and the draft admin WILL NOT be able to see your queue.

To butt in for a second. I'm trying to get all the managers in RIBC AAA International to get familiar with it and use it. It is now a great tool. Just takes a little for everybody to figure out how to use it best.
And the Available / Unavailable function makes it a great way to store you cheatsheet as Fred said.

I'm back. I'll still leave my queue for 1.07 as 'available' so Guru can feel free to check out what happens when my pick comes up. So Guru, please feel free to execute my selection after you make yours.
I'm in a league with office mates from around the country, and this queue feature on OTC is AWESOME. Our company draft never moved this swiftly given all the inherent time zone hassles. Echoing what was said several times already, even when you set up a queue and make it 'unavailable', it is a great place to store and tweak your draft list while you wait until your pick comes up.

Wasn't blue hen the last one to select a draft position so he ended up with what was left? ;)
(Before someone corrects me - I know, that we select our positions for the entire draft, and wanting that position for rounds 1-2 is different than having it the whole draft).

It seems PayPal has his email with a "." in the middle of it instead of the required "_". I had the same issue the other night with his OTC payment. Just replace the "." with a "_" in the part before the @ and it should make it.
Just an FYI. :)

Yup. My typo. The email linked to my name in this post is the one you all should have. I have another (family and close friends only) email address with the 'dot' at a different domain. My hotmail addy is the public one I use for all online purchases and more public correspondences has the 'underscore'. Haven't used paypal in a while and was wondering why it did not remember me ;)
Hotmail did not like dots in email addresses, most of the others do. I try to be consistent.
Sorry for any confusion.

KKB - Just a thought -- is there any way to indicate on the home page if a player has a queue set? I think this would be an interesting modification so that the people drafting can gauge how quickly things may go based on those on autopick status --
Thanks, Phil

There is no "autopick status," so showing that someone has a queue might be a bit misleading. Even if someone has a queue, a person (the manager, a designated picker, or the admin) still needs to make the actual pick.

Queues are the way to go. Anyone who is 4 or less picks away should consider posting their very short queue on the draft site and making it available for a desinated picker.
Another alternative is I'll be glad to help out anyone who needs it. For those who want to arrange something, I can send out text messages when your pick is up and list the last x players taken. Then I can get the text back with the pick, and either post it here for Guru to execute, or if you select me as a designated picker, I can process the selection myself.

My apologies for contributing to the May 19 estimate (#36) which is probably into June by now . . . when I was able to check today just before a lunch meeting, there was only 4 picks made -- too early to put a queue together for the 11th pick.
I wonder if I would have even thought to put Ortiz in the queue at that point, since I expected him to be long gone before 11? :-)

Not a big fan of Beltran this year. I don't think adjusting to New York was the entire reason he struggled. I think he overachieved in Houston. And his steals aren't exactly going up, I would think.

I agree. Your team is looking good. I was surprised you didnt grab Prior one pick earlier, but absolutely knew you were going to grab him with your 4th. You got some man-love for him and that's okay.

Nice one, TB. Actually, as I'll say in my rationale, I knew if I didn't get Prior I'd get one of Randy, Harden, or Felix. But if I didn't get Gagne (or Street, really), the closer pickings were getting pretty slim. Based on what happened after that, looks like I made the right call.
Now Prior just has to have the 25 win, 350 strikeout season we're all expecting...

... spoken boldly by the guy who just drafted Richie Sexson.
This is the third straight year I've had Prior in an RIBC league. Where did I draft him? 6th overall in 2004, 16th overall in 2005, and 52nd overall in 2006.
August 1st?

I was wondering if it could be fixed by drafting Konerko for Pride in the current spot and then trading the player to his team. I am thinking that if Dave R says that he wanted the player he got and not the one that IAC got, it should all be good. If so, then we just have to make sure the rest of the draft picks are correctly changed.

You know those Canadians - they all look alike, eh?
When all is said and done, cEHp should have Konerko (5.08), IAC should have Carlos Lee (5.10), and MC/TB should have cEHp's 5.16 pick.
Dave R has already confirmed that his pick of Lopez (5.09) is fine.

All of the 6 RIBC-related leagues have now completed the first round. There were 10 players selected in the 1st round of every draft. Here is the consensus order:
Alex Rodriguez (1) Albert Pujols (2) Vladimir Guerrero (3-6) Johan Santana (3-6) Mark Teixeira (4-5) Manny Ramirez (6-13) David Ortiz (5-12) David Wright (7-13) Jason Bay (6-14) Bobby Abreu (7-15)
Numbers in ( ) indicate the earliest and latest pick.

5.10 Carlos Lee, OF, MIL This pick had me a little nervous. I waited 12 hours for MC/TB to trade off their pick...
I am not sure if that is supposed to be a jab at us, but 7 of those hours were when the clock was shut off (midnight to 7 am) and a couple more were when the draft was shut down because you picked out of order. Each of us are in different times zones. You should be happy we traded the pick, because Carlos Lee was the guy we planned on taking in this spot.

Also, the draft wasn't shut down because that pick was out of order. The draft was shut down because I processed the trade incorrectly, and I had to get KKB to fix things because there was no "normal" way to do that. So IAC had no role in the shutdown. The shutdown was solely due to my error.

Gotcha, Guru. We normally pick fairly quickly. I explained some of it in my yet-to-be-posted rationale, but I will provide a quick break down.
Our plan was to take Carlos Lee, but there were a dozen other players we were comfortable with in that spot as well. We hadn't finalized our plans when the draft made it back to us at 12:30 am. I wanted to confer with my partner before making the pick or a trade, but he already went to bed. I talked with Motley at 8:14 AM CST (our time zone) and posted the trade at 8:30 AM CST. I do not know why I put EST above in post 100, but that mistake could have caused some confusion. By the time we posted the trade we had only used 2 1/2 hours of clock time to make this deal, but I know it messed the rhythm of the draft for the morning. I apologize for that.

RE TB (152): I've competed against MC in the past in several of the RI's and A leagues in the past and have never had an issue with his managerial etiquet. I haven't played many formats against you, nor do I have anything against you, but, I'm pretty sure our 6 hours of aloted time is mainly to become "aware" that we are on the clock, and not for determining our picks so much (This is the impression that Guru has given in the past in concern to why a person who has end picks shouldn't take 2x the established time limit.) So if a manager shows up, and says that they aren't properly preprared to make their pick, and that they'll "sleep on it"... That said... Yes it was a minor stab; but mainly it was to point out that the amount of time I had to wait on that pick was killing me with anticipation.

Our projected completion date is all the way up to April 1.
I'm still hopeful that we can finish by March 29. I will be leaving home for a family memorial service (great aunt - 102 years old) the evening of March 29, so I'd really like to have everything wrapped up in time to activate the league at Yahoo before I leave. If we continue at this week's pace, we should make it.
