Subject: RIHC 2006/2007: Qualifying Leagues
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Tue, Sep 26, 2006, 16:35
It's time to begin organizing the qualifying leagues for the RotoGuru Invitational Hoops Challenge.
Last year, we had one AAA league and 4 AA leagues. This year, I am expanding to 2 AAA leagues. We can have as many AA leagues as needed to fill the demand. Each league should have 12 managers, and each league will need a commissioner. Rules will be the same as the RIHC, as spelled out in the RIHC preseason discussion thread.
AAA league slots are open only for those who have qualified by playing in the RIHC or a qualifying league last season. There are 24 slots to fill. I believe that the following guidelines form the best qualifications for filling those slots:
1. RIHC managers not invited to the RIHC this year (6) 2. AAA managers ranked 5th-8th (4) 3. AA managers ranked 2-4 (12)
So far, this includes 22 managers. The remaining slots should be filled by those finishing 5th in the AA leagues (3 – Swish City is ineligible), followed by those finishing 6th (4) in the AA leagues. The two available openings should go to the first 2 5th place AA teams to request them. Additional slots should be made available to the other 5th place team and then to the 6th place teams, again in order of request. If more AAA slots are open, they may be offered to any returning QL manager, regardless of league or rank, first come, first served.
The following 22 managers are therefore automatically qualified for a AAA league: (in some cases, I may have listed the QL team name, rather than the manager name) Pacers Rule Doug Tosh Dave R slackjawed yokels KnicksFan tommyd blackjackis21 Da Bombers Team Urmas Species Tree youngroman StomoDotCom philsphan Trevor Sharpe Holt JL TD Jesus Saves xpdurmind Mark L
The 5th place AA teams are: deejay Zanyth Flying Polack
The 6th place AA teams are: threespleens Gescom Wonderboy Bandwagon
You may use this thread to express your interest in joining a AAA league. If you are interested, you must provide an email address or your spot may be forfeited if we cannot track you down when league activities (registration, drafting etc. commence)
I need two volunteers to serve as AAA commissioners. Leagues should be hosted at Yahoo, and each draft should be hosted using kafenatid.net “On the Clock” software. (Please let me know if the cost of the draft software is an issue.) By using a common draft site, we will have the ability to compare and analyze the various drafts when they are completed.
If you volunteer to be a AAA Commish, you may start a separate thread to recruit your league (using the priority guidelines listed above).
If you are interested in a AA league and you are not qualifed for a AAA slot, you may also list your interest in this thread. Again, provide your email address. We also need a volunteer to Commish the first AA league. Once the first AA league is filled, we will begin to fill another league. There is no qualification standard for joining a AA league. However, participants in the RIHC or a AAA league should refrain from also joining a AA league unless there are open slots that must be filled to complete a league.

Per Guru's instructions, the official 24 AAA invitees (since 2 invitations were decided by first come, first serve) are:
The following 24 managers are therefore automatically qualified for a AAA league: (in some cases, I may have listed the QL team name, rather than the manager name) Pacers Rule Doug Tosh Dave R slackjawed yokels KnicksFan tommyd blackjackis21 Da Bombers Team Urmas Species (confirmed) Tree youngroman StomoDotCom philsphan Trevor Sharpe Holt JL TD Jesus Saves xpdurmind Mark L deejay (confirmed) Zanyth (confirmed) =========================================
This leaves the following managers in line if any of the above 24 decline to participate:
The 5th place AA teams are: Flying Polack
The 6th place AA teams are: threespleens Gescom Wonderboy Bandwagon
FP would have first dibs as the last 5th place AA team. Wonderboy would be first in line of the four 6th place teams.
Keep the signups/confirmations coming.

I actually just registered to have a Kafenatid draft created for the first RIHC AA League. I used last year's RIHC settings as the default settings. When the RIHC creates a final list of positions and such I'll manually adjust it.
My real objective was just to get it created so people can get registered there and we will have no delays.
When we have one more manager sign up here and I get an email from Frick I'll send out invites to get everyone registered at Kafenatid.

If no one volunteers to commish this second AAA league by the end of Monday, then I'll open the league to anyone (not on the list) who volunteers to Commish. In that case, zanyth would move to first alternate.

Guru, I noticed in the thread for the main league, you commented about QL's getting started a few days earlier than the main league, but that it was "not critical." I'm curious if you were going that route to help ensure those leagues complete their drafts in time, or actually preferred last year's arrangements where RIHC drafted after some of the QL's. It seemed like 2 years ago, RIHC went first, with the other leagues lagging a few rounds behind.
Also, I wonder if you have a preference for qualifying leagues with regard to slow draft versus fast "live" draft? I remember doing the slow draft in RIHC last year and also doing a 'live' draft in an AA league last year. They had VERY different feels to them. One required obsessive research for a couple weeks off and on, and the other was all about prepping for the one night, and then letting that couple hours separate the men from the boys.
Just curious on your thoughts on those issues. Thanks.

From what I read on these threads, here's where we stand for AAA Eastern Conference:
Confirmed:
Pacers Rule Doug Slackjawed Yokels tommyd StromoDotCom
That's 5 of 12 so far.
We have not heard from: KnicksFan Urmas (also has not been contacted....I'll see if I can track him down) Trevor Sharpe (also not contacted) Mark L (also not contacted) Jesus Saves (I sent him an email...and I highly doubt he'll play) Zanyth Holt
These players would all get priority if they respond by whatever deadline we decide, though I feel in all fairness there would need to be some discussion about Jesus Saves' eligibility should he choose to play. He and I were mutual partners in our draft but I ended up mostly managing our team as the season wore on.
The following alternates have declared their willingness to play in AAA league if spots open up and would be eligible to enter in this order:
1. Flying Polack 2. WonderB 3. threespleens 4. Bandwagon
Gescom would be the next alternate if he decided to join. After that, I guess we'd be seeking more guidance from Guru on eligibility.
Flying Polack I'm almost sure you can count on an AAA spot. WonderB, I'd give you a 90 to 95% chance of having a spot open, and threespleens and Bandwagon I think your chances for AAA membership this year are decent as well.
We're not looking to begin our draft for at least a week and half, so I would suggest we give AAA eligible gurupies until Friday to respond to the invites and for us to try to find their emails and contact all of them. Would that work for you AA leaguers (e.g. Farn) to still have a week after that to form leagues (probably on a first come first served basis) prior to possibly beginning your drafts?
I'd hate for Bandwagon, for example, to hold out for a spot on the AAA league and thereby lose a spot in the AA league he'd like to play in if a slot doesn't end up being open for him by the deadline for AAA eligible players to claim their spots, assuming he wouldn't play in both leagues.
Maybe it would be better to make the deadline something like 11 PM Eastern Time on Thursday night, so that would give AA leagues this Friday to get a jump on forming, for people that have computer access at work and wouldn't check threads over the weekend. That still gives about 72 hours for holding remaining AAA spots open to be claimed. I'm open to input on that for sure. Just throwing out an idea.

If anyone played in the RIHC league that Urmas qualified in, perhaps you can find his email through your league page in yahoo. If you'd like to help move this along by helping us contact him, please give this a try:
Login to yahoo, using the same id you used for that fantasy league, then on the sports.yahoo.com page, click on the fantasy link, and then click on the "fantasy profile" link near the top of the page under the page heading "Fantasy Sports".
You'll see a history of your teams & the leagues they played in. Click on last year's RIHC league and once on that page, click on the managers link. If Urmas was in that league, it should have him listed on that page along with an email. If so, please email his address to me or post it in here.
Already Jesus Saves is OUT for AAA, which means Flying Polack, you're in- and of course everyone else moves up a spot!

Zanyth is confirmed. post 5.
i know there is precedent for playing in more than one league. that said should i be prepared to pull myself from commishing in AA? or just play in both AAA and AA and say the AA is just for fun.

Love to have you over in the East, xp. Lord knows we could use your superior HTML skills in standings posts....
You also were an excellent league mate and very participatory on the discussion threads.
Not sure if we'll get "authorized" for live draft or not. Would need to get the nod from Guru and probably also at least six managers.
Maybe Species would allow you to void your contract....assuming someone else would prefer to go West....Perhaps we have not passed the EAST/WEST trading deadline.... hehe

As it now stands, we have 8 confirmations for 12 spots:
Pacers Rule Doug Slackjawed Yokels tommyd StomoDotCom Trevor Sharpe Zanyth Flying Polack
We have yet to hear from: Knicksfan Holt Mark L and Urmas, whom we so far do not have any contact information for.
If all four of the above respond in time with intentions to play, we'll be full. However, if not, this is the current waiting list:
1. WonderB 2. threespleens 3. Bandwagon 4. Gescom if he has interest
Obviously, it is unlikely there will be additional openings for this year's AAA.

Sorry for not being around. I've been ... err ... hibernating. Yes, that's it! Sort of. I've had my big summer sleep and now as hoops and hockey seasons are about to start I'm up and running again.
Thanks for having me in AAA league! I hope I'll do better than last year.

I'm heading to the airport now. . . I'm fine with either a live draft or a slow draft, so count my vote in whatever directions is closest to majority . . . I vote for 4 bench spots and no DL.

Responding to s few questions from above.
As I recall, the fast draft was chosen for a AA league due to a late start and the concern that a slow draft would not complete in time. I don't care which is used, but I think it is very difficult to find a time that all 12 managers can attend a slow draft. If you use Kafenatid On-the-Clock, a slow draft can easily be completed in less than 2 weeks, especially if you shorten the clock if progress get bogged down. I think this also allows for a more thoughtful draft - which may or may not be a good thing!
But each league should decide. If there is no strong consensus, however, a slow draft should be done if time permits. It really sucks if your league does a fast draft and you are stuck submitting a queue for the whole draft.
It is not necessary for QL drafts to start before the RIHC draft. Many QL's have decided to do that, however, to avoid the temptation to copy from the RIHC draft. From my perspective, there is no problem if you decide/need to start later.
If a AAA slot opens up for someone already confirmed in a AA league, that AA manager can either do both leagues, or relinquish the AA slot (assuming that someone can be found to take the opening). If he/she does both, his/her results in the AA league will not count for purposes of succession.

Attn RIHC AA League #2 members:
A second email was just sent to Frick and CJ, who are the only 2 who haven't registered. If those 2 register I'll hit the randomize button and get things rolling towards an actually starting date.
Please check in here daily to keep up with league activities. When those 2 register I'll start a new thread so we can keep track much easier.

Thanks for the clarifications, Guru.
Welcome back to fantasy-hoops-land, KnicksFan and Urmas!
Looks like the RIHC AAA East is shaping up quite nicely....
Since we've picked up KnicksFan and Urmas, that means we are just waiting to hear from Holt and Mark L. I believe each has been sent at least one email. We'll give them another 48 hours.
WonderB and threespleens remain on the bubble.
I'll start a thread for the AAA East shortly.
It's great to "see" friends again now that hoops has finally rolled around.

There probably will be enough for 2 or 3 AA leagues again this year before all is said and done. I hope someone wants to take on commishing another live draft option in AA like last year. It'd be a cool way to go for those up for the challenge.

WonderBoy, can we start our own thread for the AA #2 and start discussing the draft, IE slow/fast. When the next 2 people come in we can just redirect them there. I would also give us the oppertunity to call out anyone in the league personally.

Yeah, I had a similar experience....a week ago not much...then, all of a sudden....
Well, you made it, fortunately. Hate to see someone lose a spot for simply not knowing it was time to go.
AAA is now closed/full. XPdurmind, looks like the trading deadline may have also passed. Looks like we're going slow draft anyway. Maybe you can commish a fast draft AA league or other non-RIHC league?
