First, how did you convince Guru to give you guys your own message board? What, there are like three of you? LOL

I'm going to give footy a try. My buddy lived Down Under for four years and got a taste for the sport, so he was a co-founder of The Seattle Cats. Our first practice is this weekend. I haven't the faintest idea what to expect. I've watched it on ESPN years ago and loved the 'ol "two gun" goal signal by the refs. So wish me luck.

I'll go along with alot, but I refuse to drink any of your crappy beer. We make the best local beer up here in Seattle, you Aussies would be under the table trying to keep up with us pint for pint with our 8%+ beer!

Welcome to our little club, SZ. The local Democratic Party meets here monthly. Both of us. Ha.

Aussie Rules is a lot like American football, except there are no pads, the field is not rectangular, bigger ball, fewer foul calls, and much, much more drinking. Really quite similar.

I'm not sure how we got the forum in the first place; I guess Guru was just in a good mood, and many of the others (Politics, Auto, Golf, etc) had not yet begun.

Are you going to join us with a fantasy team in the AFL?

Welcome Seattle Zen.
Those are definitely fighting words and I'll take you up on that drinking challenge one day soon. You blokes in Seattle won't know what's hit you after I'm finished with you and your local brews. ;)
As for our own boards, when we started we had more people and joined the fantasy AFL game at AFL.com.au but the game is not all that exciting so we started a tipping comp and it took off from there.
Good luck with your first taste of Aussie Rules and remember to keep your elbows up.

Well, I see your first problem: Geelong is your sister football club.

Nice to hear from a newcomer, SZ. Bring that drinking talk to Chicago and we'll see who's horizontal at midnight! ;))

We have a good time with Footy. I'm sure you will, too. Hey Frank, I'm still waiting to see if we'll be in the same AFL fantasy league again. If so do you want to start the division or do you want one of us to do it?

SZ, if you have acces to it, Fox World shows Footy games a couple times a week. Thursday nights and Friday afternoon highlights. If you need more info let us know.

Thanks for the support. My first practice went well, mainly because we had no tackling drills. It will be a long while before I kick the ball with the accuracy that I want, I envision myself as a punter who has the whole defense storming him, yet I need to kick the ball to some guy and hit him on the run.

We are going to start practicing on Thursday evenings so we can go watch the Footy matches on Fox Sports World afterwards.

As for Geelong, we are presently trying to change our affiliation to some other team.

Rugg, it might be an idea if you, or one of the other champs, could set our league up in the fantasy game. I'm a little snowed under with assignments for the next few days and we are getting close to the start of the season, in fact it's on the weekend after this one. So if you can do that it would be fantastic and a big help.
thanks mate.

Go PORT!!

Woo Hoo, we won our first match of the year! This was a crazy match against Vancouver here in Seattle. We won 44-42, but they scored 7 goals and had NO behinds. Obviously, they were very efficient when they had the ball down in our end. I'm partly to blame, I was called for two fouls that they converted to goals. We, on the other hand, thought we had lost. We only had 5 goals, and none of us were really paying attention to the number of points we had, but out piss poor kicking led to 14 behinds, so we snuck out with a win when we should have slaughtered them.

I played the back line, which I like because it doesn't take much skill and because you can just FLATTEN guys. Since we controlled the ball down in their end most of the game, I wasn't even winded. I've become addicted to Footie because there is nothing like watching the opponent bend to scoop the ball while you are bearing down on him with the pace of a freight train that fell off a tressel. Just laying out a guy is the greatest feeling I've had playing sports. I didn't get a good hit in this game, so I am very eager to gt back out there for the next game. Footie is simply a great game, and drinking with a bunch of Aussies is great fun.

Great work, SZ! Sounds like you found the perfect beginner position as well.
