Sure, Ben

Here is a detailed list of the rules.

But I can give you a brief synopsis. You play on a cricket oval. There are four posts at the long ends of the oval. If you kick the ball through the two middle posts without it being touched, you get six points, if you kick it throught the other posts, one.

There are two ways to pass the ball, kicking it and hand passing it. To hand pass a ball, you have to punch it with a fist while holding it in your other hand. You may run with the ball for 15 meters then you must either dispose of the ball or bounce it off the grass to continue to run. If you kick the ball more than 10 meters and your teammate catches it, it is called a "mark" and play stops. Your teammate may take up to a minute to step back and kick, handpass, or he may choose to continue play by running.

Once the ball is in play, the ball carrier may be tackled above the knees and below the shoulders. You must get rid of the ball before being tackled or you will be called for "holding the ball" and the opposition gets a free kick.

That's the jist. Gameplay is fast and furious with many full speed collisions. It's great fun.

Aussie rules is a game for thugs who descend directly from criminals in the old world.

OK, Zen, your post is a year old nad I'm just reading it. Very well put. I used to watch it a lot and had figured out many of the rules, but you've solved a couple other questions I've always had.

I never see it on anymore. It used to be on Fox Sports all the time--or maybe it still is and I just don't get to the right place and time.

It's only on Fox Soccer channel now, unfortunately. I think the biggest barrier to its acceptance in the US is the announcing. I've been playing for years and have been exposed to many long hours listening to Aussie accents and I have a hard time following the announcers sometimes.

With the advent of Tivo, if Fox had a show on late night once a week with two American studio hosts commenting on highlights much like their Pride Fighting show, I think it would be a huge hit. Post some of the shows on the internet for free downloads. Gather a little groundswell and maybe once in a while broadcast an entire game with American announcers. How many times do we have to watch the same elimination match for Poker Superstars III?

For those of you in Vancouver, BC this weekend, come check out Canada v. USA in Aussie Rules. There will be 14 different games with the NorthWind v. Revolution meeting twice and a Canada v. USA over 35 match on Sunday. In addition to playing for the Seattle Grizzlies, I will be donning the Red, White and Blue for the USA over 35 team. I'm really excited because I'm in pretty good shape and should hold up quite well against the old guys.

Yes, it's just an exhibition game but it's as close as I am ever going to get to putting on a jersey with "USA" on it.

It's hard to argue with that claim, Great One. We stayed in a dorm on the UBC campus that weekend. I paid $45 for a room with my own bed that shared a bathroom and living area with 6 others. The room was on the 14th floor and had a STUNNING view of downtown Vancouver, the mountains, the water, just amazing. The whole campus is beautiful, the Canadians spend so much money on their public works.

About 5 years ago everyone laughed at the Canadian/US exchange rate, visiting Vancouver was great because things were cheap. It's now .98/$1. Those $7 beers are no longer really just $3.50. Ouch!

By the way, there weren't enough players to get a 35 and over game going, so it was canceled. The Revolution v. North Wind games were very entertaining, the North Wind winning the first game, I think the first time Canada has beaten the US.

At long last, AFL is back on ESPN.
For the first time since 1997, the Australian Football League will be on an ESPN network in North America. Following the demise of the sport on Setanta, the AFL has struck a deal for live coverage on ESPN360 of 3 matches per round (weekly) now and beginning in 2010, additional coverage of at least four matches per season (year) on ESPN2. Canadian fans will get one match per week (delayed) on TSN and repeats on TSN2.

Should be a cracking season in 2010. Can't see Port troubling the playoffs, but this season looks like it will be very even.

Very cool. Good luck, "Chuckie." You should see if MBJ will come--it's his state you'll be in!

Nah, I'm not going, for a bunch of reasons - can't afford it and I don't practice with them as I live too far away these days. Not to mention I'm too old!
