Well, I am updating the spreadsheets to work on Midseason games, as well as fullseason games.
First and most importantly, this is only supported to work in Excel 97. I have no intention to port it to Excel 2000.
First to the plate is the MLB_Division_Tracker_BLANK.zip (73.9 KB): This is used to track your team(s) as well as others and/or entire divisions (heck, any/every team in the universe for that matter). To use this with Midseason, simply add an M infront of the team ID number. A quick help box will appear if you hover your mouse cursor over cell A1 (do I hear a cross promotional opportunity there?). If you do post the thread source that can be created, please remember to select YES to "Ignore line feeds? no (typical) yes (for HTML table input)" when doing the actual posting. Things get hairy if you don't. If you have problems with it, please post here. If I can't get to it, there are lots of capable guys here that can help.
This should still work if/when The Sporting News switches over the midseason pages to be like the fullseason pages (as long as they still use the "www.smallworld.com" URL, but probably not if they switch to exclusively using the "fantasygames.sportingnews.com" URL, which I feel they will. I'll update at that point.)
Also be sure to check out BaseballRosters spreadsheet from Sludge if you want Excel 2000 stuff.

BTW, it should work on Excel 97. I'm not sure how it handles the crosses and little dots, and I've yet to get any feedback on it.

The baseball rosters program does work for midseason. But for midseason rosters you have to put an 'm' in front of the ID number. Just download it and play around with it.

Skidalz, it's not that Sludge isn't nice (he's extremely nice for even providing the spreadsheets, IMO), it's just that he gets so many questions about the spreadsheets and so many "wishes" and "wants" that he usually ends up having to be point-blank about things. I'm the same way about the Pick'ems and MadBall games that I run. People ask me questions about things that are already laid out in the "Rules", so my answer is usually right to the point. No frills.
Don't take it personally. Most of the stuff offered around here is good stuff. If you want to know what it is, try it out and see. It's the easiest way. ;)

Thanks, KKB...
And you're right, Sludge is very nice for offering his program....
I've been playing around with it for a while, it's pretty bitchen...
I guess what i kind of meant to ask is, besides the fact that it is a nice quick access to my TOO MANY teams, but do you guys usually use it to track team rosters in a division to make sure there are no cheaters...?

Skidalz, I can't remember if the "Division Tracker" has this implemented or not, but the "Rosters" spreadsheet would be a good way to do that if the "Tracker" spreadsheet doesn't have it.

I'm still learning all this stuff, but I don't think the div tracker does, roster does...
having a great time with both of them...

i'm actually starting school for VB next month, so lok out next season for some cool programs....

is there a spreadsheet out there that tracks how many points you got on a night before they come out on smallworld? kind of like the "tonights SWP" threads but for only your roster instead of every baseball player. now i know hardly anything about spreadsheets so im not really sure if my question makes sence but if it does can someone tell me if there is one.
Sox Man, I think Ive got what you're looking for, give me an email and Ill send it to you. I think it only works for 97 though as Ive got 2000 and it doesnt work, though I remember using it before when I had 97 and no problems.
Oops! Honest mistake. I grew up loving the candy "Skittles" and I've seen people use the name "Skittlz" before. I guess it just got stuck in my head that way. I promise it won't happen again Skidalz. ;)

RSF and SLudge....
a. I downloaded the div. tracker, but it seems to lock up a lot(I have been trying to get the no headed updates for the last .5 hour with no luck), any suggestions?
b. The baseball roster doesn't seem to recognize the midseason teams, i put an M in front of the id#, but no luck, any suggestions?

Skidazl, I'm not RSF or Sludge, but...
a. It's because of the lock-ups on pages that you normally get while browsing around Smallworld (Stallworld?). Sometimes, their pages just lock up and there's not much you can do. I read in other threads that people have had success really early in the morning or during other "odd" hours when there isn't a lot of Smallworld activity.
b. Not sure about that one, but it may have to do with Smallworld changing the format of the MS team pages compared to the FS team pages.

RSF - can you post the link to download the points every night. I'd be able to help out on some nights.
i think i found the problem. all the data is from last year. for example it sais David Wells is still on Toronto. could this be causing a "script error" i have almost no knowledge of spreadsheets so if anyone knows wut to do can u please tell me here or email me. if not then i will just forget about it
MLB_SWP2001_v3a2.zip (544KB) should be what you are looking for J. I am updating that one too (Gurupie BragTags, a new way to automagicly update the player lists, etc), so I should have a new link fairly soon. The sheet called "FrozenRosters" does not work. It is left overs from last year, that I have not adapted to work for this year. It could be done, but it is definitely not a priority for me. (Actually, a complete rewrite of it would be best, as it is some clunky code.) This one does contain the new style thread source maker, but its a fragile little woodland creature, so I'd stick with the old thread maker for now.
Good luck.

Are the table_id numbers one behind the fullseason? Fullseason is at 6, and those are updated today, but thus far midseason only has info at 5. The other day, they seemed to line up.
MLB_SWP2001_v3d.zip (581KB) is an update to the SWP thread creator. It contains both the new and old style source creators. I have also added a way to automagicly update the players list, for when SW updates/IPOs players.
Let me know if there are any bugs. Good Luck. (as always, this is for Excel 97 only)

MLB_Division_Tracker_BLANK.zip: Updated for recent SW screen format changes. Also implemented the "Head 2 Head" source creator. This is an additional post that allows you to view two teams latest Frozen Roster, side by side.
Good luck.

I get a 502 connection failed error with the division tracker.
Thanks for the info Dan. I keep using the "these only work in Excel 97" line because I am too lazy to test them in Excel 2000 (and because I can't stand how slow Excel 2000 is). Strange about the Head2Head. I'll check that out on Excel 2000, but seems like it should be half dozen of one, 6 of another.

The problem with the head 2 head is that it seems not to pick up the players off of the frozen roster page. When the update is done under each player heading in the spreadsheet it says 'no player'.
I just ran it on Excel 2000, and everything worked fine. From the 'no player' part, makes me wonder what the "startDate" in the getFrozenRostersURL function is. Are you doing this with the latest downloadable version? startDate line should be:
startDate = "07/11/2001"
Let me know.

I was using the updated version provided above, though I did copy the data from the old SWO standings to the new spreadsheet, maybe that effected it...Ill try running it from scratch and see if it works.
You should be able to leave that copied data in there. When you run the spreadsheet tomorrow, it should correctly bring in the players, while still maintaining the historical tracking information. I could see the old version putting in the "no player" because it had the incorrect "startDate".

Strike One, I can't speak for RSF, but I picked up PHP scripting about a year ago and I look at some of my code now and know I wouldn't have a clue what the heck was going on a year ago. Basically, it's about desire. If you don't have a desire to do programming, you're not going to learn much, but if you do, you will.
I guess it's kind of like most things in life. ;)

I guess what I meant was, did you read a book, like "Scripting for Dummies" for was it just something you pick up. I know the basics of table making and a good amount a HTML, but I don't know too much about Java scripting and stuff like that. I've used Visual Basic a couple of times but I haven't gotten anything out of it. If scripting is somethign that really interests me, would you suggest I go out and get a book? What's the best way to learn? I'd also like to get to know excel better. I'm lost with Macros. Basically I'm just curious of where I could learn more advanced scripting.
Strike One, I have found the best "book" on the VBA macros in Excel (all MS Office Products) is to hit "F1" quite frequently. While I haven't looked to hard for the hard cover books, when I did, I really didn't find any I liked.
VBA is a simple language, especially if you have already dealt with other languages. Some of the first languages I dealt with were Borland Pascal and MS QuickBasic. I learned these the old fashioned way, trial and error (and thick manuals). Later came C, C++ and Java. These were in a classroom environment (with terrible instructional texts). Personally, once you learn one language, the rest come fairly easy.
BTW, here is a previous thread where Richard and Madman also discuss this idea. (I still stick by what I said in Post #1 of that thread too.) Good luck and don't be afraid to post your questions here, as there seem to be many IT people in these boards.

I still seem to have problems with the head2head as it still doesnt load any players? I could send you the file Im using if you wish.
Also RSF, Im having trouble updating the players I click the 'Update Players List' button and then it asks me if I would like to save changes to 'stats.cgi' so I click yes, then it brings me to the save as screen...I am not sure what to do here, I just save the file as a new workbook?, though when I go back to the Price Movers worksheet the new players are not added. What is it I am supposed to do when updating the players, I am using Excel 2000 for this as well.

I think I'm going to go out and by the Excel 2000 VBA - Reference Guide that Madman was talking about. That should get me started. Tweaking with the macros may be the best way but I need a good foundation to work from. For Example, knowing in general what a macro does, how to create one, the basic stuff like that would probably help me quite a bit. Anyways, I'm gonna check out the books and stuff first before I buy them. Mayeb a local library has some that I could take for a couple of weeks.

butt - just incase you didn't see my last post RSF, Im still having troubles again today!
Well, it works on my side. But I think I might know what the problem is. You are a goofy CanEHdian. Or atleast you view the date as "DD-MM-YYYY", as opposed to "MM-DD-YYYY". In the macro code (see post #41), try switching the startDate to "11-07-2001", retrieve new data, and see what it does. I'll bet (not much though) that that is the problem with the HeadToHead stuff.
I'll look at player update thing tomorrow (time permitting).
Dan, the other issue with the Head2Head source being pasted along with the DivTrack information, was a coding error on my behalf. I used the same function name in both posts, but doing different things. To correct it, edit the createHead2Head macro:
Change the three instances of changeData( to changeDataH2H( . This will differentiate the two function names, and make it work. (Find and replace within the Current Procedure works great).
I have also uploaded the corrected version to: MLB_Division_Tracker_BLANK.zip, for people who don't want to change the macro.

So RSF, is the date wrong for the spreadsheet as the players in the Head2Head are a day behind...Is all I have to do is change the date to 7/10/2001?

RecycledSpinalFluid
ID: 21446223 Wed, Aug 01, 02:21
Actually, as Sludge says in post #32, the MS and FS use different "startDate"s. That just didn't sink in until now. (OK, I'm a little slow.)
In the GetFrozenRostersURL macro, change:
startDate = "07/11/2001"
TO:
startDate = "07/10/2001" If UCase(seasonToUse) = "MIDSEASON" Then startDate = "07/11/2001" End If
This should fix it. The fixed version is uploaded to the server.
BTW, as for the "Update Players" routines in the various spreadsheets, I looked at these in Excel 2000, and it looked like a can of worms that I don't want to deal with, so I'm sticking with what I said in the second line of this thread: "this is only supported to work in Excel 97. I have no intention to port it to Excel 2000."

Well, I think this is fully functional now, so here:
MLB_SWP_StatsInc_v3b2.zip is a completely revamped SWP creator, relying far less on ESPN and going straight to their source, Stats Inc. Let me know if you have any issues with it. As always, this was written for Excel 97 (therefore, I have no idea if it works in Excel 2000. Report if it does.)

Made some mods to the MLB_Division_Tracker_BLANK.zip: 1.) Added a static thread (used instead of sortable style). 2.) Updated the Head2Head thread maker to actually work. 3.) Added an Ownership thread creator. This may need a little updating later.
Also did something to the MLB_SWP_StatsInc_v3b3.zip spreadsheet. But the hell if I remember what it was.

Feeling the crushing pressure from the fools out there (err I mean Excel 2000 users), I modified the MLB_SWP_StatsInc_2000_v0.04.zip to work in Excel 2000 (Dan, even the player updater should work in this one). I have only checked it when all the games have been completed, so I guarantee absolutely nothing with it, but let me know if stuff doesn't work anyway.
