Haven't posted in awhile, I just can't believe this... In my lifetime, I just can't compare this to anything... Just in shock... I feel helpless as an american...

I hope as a nation we all pull together, actually I know we will.. There is absolutely no reason why we should not walk around each day and feel like we are unsafe.

The sadest comment i've heard on the news today is from a bystander they interviewed...

"Tonight a bunch of children will not have a mommy or daddy."

*sigh*
That just eats me up inside.. Cause my cousin who works in Manhattan just had a baby that's 1 years old... And it could of been her.

Why, then, does SW Football and Baseball not seem trivial to some people?

Sludge, sorry for the misidentification. My mind is in a jumble right now, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Yes, I agree. The only thing I'm advocating is the focus on the people responsible for these acts, and not a country, or group of individuals (Palestinians, Muslims, etc.) as a whole. I believe you are saying the same thing.

Seeing the damage of surrounding buildings in the WTC area shows that this is still not over. Far from it.

Question,

Flights that could be coming in from England, other countries, etc... If they are highjacked or what not... What would the policy be of the government to stop them from crashing into places throughout the US? Via be it NY or LA... Kill innocent people to save other innocent people?

Just something I thought about......

Also just heard on the radio an American Airlines plane is still missing.

Images of the PIT crash are making their way to TV. Apparently, the plane crashed into a corn field/forest area. CNN reports that the plane hit the ground at a 45-degree angle after flying at about 200 feet with no landing gear. They say the plane made a sharp bank and then rose in the air, then dove into the ground. From the way they described the crash, it sounds like it was somehow out of control or an unintended crash at that particular location. The intended location is not known, though it was certainly more along the lines of PIT or another large city.

In order to regain peace, a war must be fought. This is how we obtained our freedom over 225 years ago and it is how we have maintained it for us and for those nations that employ the same citizen freedoms we believe in. Evilness, when threatening our democracy, needs to be dealt with swiftly and completely. War means PEOPLE DIE, both those who participate and those who may be "innocent bystanders". The problem is the present generation, for the most part, doesn't realize the price in lives we have paid over the
years in order to enjoy what we have.

Unfortunately, it is a price we will always have to be ready to pay. To adopt a pacifist approach would have had us all speaking German back in the 1940's.

Feel shock. Horror. Rage. Regroup. Seek out and destroy the offenders. They are not worthy of any of this Earth's bounties, and any nation condemning us of what WE need to do to protect OUR interests is, in my mind, consorting to the enemy.

Just amazing that in the name of religion, some of the bloodiest battles/wars have been about religion.

It pains me to see people throughout the middle-east dancing in the streets... Children included... Cheering that 10000+ innocent people have died...

The sadness and pain almost turns to anger and hate for these people... Is this wrong? These people are taught from birth to believe just one way... it's like hatred in the US...

Just want everyone to know, I'm sure as angry as we are, and the revenge we all want... There is no doubt more innocent people are going to die...

I think most people will agree that retaliation against those responsible is necessary. That without, needs to be done.
The question is, how far do we retaliate? I'm going use Bin Ladin just because he is the most likely.
Say Bin Ladin takes credit and actually is the responsible one. The US has asked, told, begged and bargained with Afghanastan to let us at Bin ladin for years. They consistently say no. In my eyes, Afghanastan has much culpability in this. They give these people protection. They give these terrorists resources. They have responsibility.
Perhaps how we strike back against a country that has assisted this terrorist group should be different. But those countries and governments who knew about this, who aided the terrorist groups who gave resources and sheltered and protected need to be taught a lesson. You harbor somebody who is hurting the US, you get in our way and you'll get stomped.
.
Yes, I believe in peace. I teach martial arts. I teach kids martial arts. I teach them how to hit, how to kick, how to strike. But I do not teach them how to fight. I teach them how to defend yourself and I teach them that there is always other methods to try first aside from physical violence.
However, I don't think you can take this incident as a stand alone incident and look for other ways to respond just from this incident. This is the culimation of years of attacks. Of years of soft policy, light retaliation and figuring out 'what else we can do.' Its time to realize that the only way these people will stop attacking the US if they are stopped.

agreed BillB...peace is won and maintained via one means and one means only...'Peace through superior firepower'. Unless we make the assaulting of our people prohibitive expense...it will continue. Once we demonstrate that we can and will retaliate, viciously, w/o remorse and with total dedication to the eradication of the offender...then and only then is there even the remotest possibility of Peace.

a) You have to wonder how much more they had planned for today that didn't go through...They attacked NY & Washington, you have to think they had plans to attack SF and/or LA. I would take a guess and say there were plans of maybe double the amount of plane attacks.
b)What can America do to prevent this in the future ?? Is it possible to prevent someone from taking a smaller plane and just crash it into a building ?

We lost the population of a small city today, 10,000 plus people. The response to this dasterly deed should have some equiventency in memory of those that couldn't protect themselves.

Is it possible? Absolutely. The difficulty does not lie in the preventing the act...it lies in the preventing of the act WHILE maintaining the civil liberties we Americans demand and have enjoyed for some 200 years. Now, to ask the question, Is it possible while maintaining our past individual freedoms? becomes a whole different question. The answer to that one I fear, is NO.

RE: questions concerning airport security and how a terrorist can get through. All it takes to hi-jack a plane is a plastic Glock. The weapon used for destruction was the plane itself. If a man is willing to die for his cause, there is virtually nothing one can do to stop him. It wouldn't surprise me if they've had this plan in the works since the last time they tried to blow up the WTC. They tried from the bottom and were unsuccessful. This time they tried from the top and reduced one of mankinds most remarkable pieces of architecture (size wise) to rubble within less than 2 hours. They accomplished what they set out to do. They can watch CNN and bask in the glory of that accomplishment. But before they go to sleep tonight, they will know that forces stronger than even the will of Allah will be upon them and there will be no escape.

WiddleAvi, in direct answer to your question the Canadian Army has just arrived at Dorval International Airport here in Montreal (I live in an appartment building not too far away, so I can see with my golf binoculars pretty well) and they have a plane surrounded by at least 50 armed men. No news crews around and the airport has been shut down so I have to assume I'm one of the 1st to know about it. I'd call my local news station but I don't want to start a panic around here. For all I know this is just a precautionary measure that they're doing for all planes landing from the US. Pretty unsettling though...

I was working around the house today with the TV and radio off, and the first I heard of the attack was when I saw this thread title. I thought it was some kind of OT joke thread at first, then I saw that there was already 72 posts, and I knew something was terribly wrong. I flipped on the TV, saw the havoc, and this is the first time I've been able to bring myself to post.

My prayers got out to the victims, their family and friends, and for those rescue workers trying to mitigate the damage. I pray that the injured survivors heal quickly. And I pray that those responsible for this can be brought to justice without the outbreak of widespread violence.

Patjams, you are absolutely correct. Its important to remember a number of things, not the least of which is that turning to airport security for answers is just the wrong place.
Other things to keep in mind (and I only post this because I'm now hearing VERY disturbing reports out of Detroit and NyC):
Arabs and mid-easterners in general are NOT to blame. Many of Arab descent are happy and patriotic citizens of the United States. Turning on their communities also is the wrong place to turn to lay blame and take out aggression.
Please, as a regular citizen do not try and do the job of the government or military force.
I've heard numerous reports of Arabian people in NYC being pulled from cabs and beaten. I've hear in many places that Detroit (which has a very large mid-eastern community) of rioting or near rioting. Just because somebody is of Arab or Mid-eastern descent does not make them responsible for this.

That Mikel, would fit with Bin Laden M.O. A 'major' attack with one hand which draws all your attention/resources and all the while, the true threat sneaks in from the other side. I'd test the water in ANY govt building/attck site...before drinking it today if it were me.

A passenger with a cell phone on American 93 (the PIT crash) went into the bathroom on the plane and called some emergency number and reported, "We are being hijacked! We are being hijacked!"

Looks like the PIT crash somehow managed to avert a disaster on the scale of NYC.

Please be aware that Bin-Ladin does have the $$ to pull something like this off. And, he has the resources to recruit trained pilots. In their religious zealotness, these people will do anything.

I have, as well, travelled to many other countries. In most cases, Americans were treated well and acted well. However, when it comes to the middle east, we are not looked upon as human. We are looked upon as devils, the enemy, no better than scum. So, since they think we are devils lets prove them right, and blast them to hell...where they surely belong.

For the Palestinians to "grieve for the children" is sickening! I don't want their grief. There is only one person ultimately responsible for this. And the fact that the Afghan, et al, hide him is more than enough for me to say...take off the gloves. NOW!

Peace will not settle this. The reason this happened during this week is fairly evident. And it is fairly evident why the Palesinian organizations are behind it. They abhored the fact of the Camp David Accords, which happened during this week. Arafat can take his words of condolence and shove them.

Now, to the post that we need George Sr. Please! Just exactly what do you want Bush to do right now? Only 5 hours after the fact. As sarge pointed out to me, even if planes were deployed as soon as the first plane hit the WTC, they wouldn't be at their target yet. And, which exact target do you propose they hit?

We need to take a lesson from the Israelies...the bleeding heart liberals in the US need to shut up and let the HAWKS take over.

I say, where is Barry Goldwater when you need him? Talk about not putting up with s*** like this. Bin Laden would have been long gone by now. But of course we had Clinton, the ultimate politician, who did not take care of business when he could have!

Just FYI, there was also a bomb threat this morning that evacuated one of the biggest buildings at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor this morning. Don't know if it's a hoax or not.

Some people here are fairly nervous since it's home to one of the bigget pro-isreal centers in the country, as well as a huge pro-palestinian movement.

Unemployed: No doubt the phone lines in and around NYC are jammed. I'd suggest patience.

As to who to attack, when, where etc:

Let's start with Iraq. We know Saddam's attitude. We know his position on us as a people. We also know he shot down one of our unmanned recon planes. Bad timing Saddam. BOOM! Then, onto Afghanistan. Where Bin Laden has been hiding, reveling, recruiting and training terrorists for years. If the Afghan Gov't won't give him up to us, fine. We'll just come and get the bastard then. And while we're there, we'll put in a Gov't that has just a wee-bit more respect for the U.S. Anyone for making Afghanistan the 51st state?

I hate to play the devil's advocate here, but what if it wasn't Bin Laden? I'd hate to think we'd use him as a scapegoat for our anger. There has been no proof that it was him other than the fact that he's a known terrorist. That can be said of lots of people. I hope the US (the world for that matter) waits to find out who is responsible before taking action.

hey, I never said I believe him. I jsut posted what the news reported. At the same time, he seems like the type that would be jumping for joy and proclaiming a great victory had he staged this.
Perhaps he is going to wait to accept responsbility for a few days. My gut still tells me he did it, but if he did, his denial seems odd and out of place.
Also, I've now heard that the plane which went down outside of Pittsburgh was out of Newark, Nj and headed to San Fransisco.
My guess is that one was headed for the Sears Tower in Chicago and somebody, either passenger or pilot, did something very heroic.

KTX, about stuyvesant H.S.- as you may know, i graduated from there in june and i got in contact with some people there and apparently every student and teacher made it out safely.
This attack hits really close to home for me since i went to school just blocks from there, i live just 1 mile from the site, and my dad works at city hall which is just a couple blocks away. It also brings a tear to my eye when i see the buildings where i went to lunch everyday and where i waited for my bus, etc. on the news in ruins. hopefully this will be the last of these attacks.
