Just saw a scrolling message on CNN Headline News stating that Delta flight 1069 from Boston this morning was stopped by police as it left the gate and a passenger removed. No further info available on any of the broadcasts I checked.

Delta web site shows this is a Boston - Atlanta flight.

Continental Air Cuts Flights, Lays Off 12,000

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Continental Airlines, the nation's fifth largest airline, on Saturday said it will immediately reduce its long-term flight schedule by about 20 percent and will be forced to lay off about 12,000 employees due to the current and expected impact of terror attacks on the United States.

I don't know if this was mentioned elsewhere, but Midway Airlines has also suspended operations as of 9/12/01.

For those who have PayPal accounts, they have finally set up a donation page to transfer PayPal balances to the relief effort. Also, they will take credit/debit card donations, and will waive any of their fees in the transactions.

Mario LeMoose - Thanks. My wife commented last night that we need to switch from Little Mermaid II wallpaper (for my daughter, I swear) to something patriotic.

It's not directly related to the attacks, but more tragedy in the sports world Alex Zanardi lost both his legs as the result of a crash in the "American Memorial 500":

Accident casts pall over Brack's win

"KLETTWITZ, Germany -- Two-time CART champion Alex Zanardi lost both of his legs after his car was hit by another traveling about 200 mph Saturday during the American Memorial 500."

Let's also not forget the 19 (?) American's that lost their lives in a plane crash in the Yucatan this last week. Totally overshadowed by the WTC disaster.

Live from NYC...

things are quite different and weird here since Tuesday. Folks are more polite and quiet on the subways, and there are fewer subways running. I watched an ambulance with its siren going today drive by 1st ave on the upper east side and cars and taxis actually stopped well in advance to let it go (as opposed to competing with it or following it to gain an edge).

In our neighborhood there are many missing persons signs on telephone poles and stores with pictures of persons who worked on the 9x and 10x floors of the WTC -- these folks are undoubtedly gone, but without proof, how can one give up hope?

My wife and daughter baked cookies the other day, and they then gave most of them away to the local firehouse in our 'hood uptown where 8 firefighters lost their lives...My wife said there were mounds of flowers and candles everywhere at the firehouse. I am glad they did that.

Work seems meaningless, but since I am in HR and a psychologist, I responded to a call from Employee Relations in my big company (big bank in NYC) and am now going to lead some group counselling sessions for employees next week. I attended one of these sessions this past friday and heard some harrowing and very, VERY emotional first hand encounters from folks who worked downtown for my company near the WTC. It is clear that all of us in NYC are suffering from one degree of post traumatic stress disorder or another.

My wife cannot get enough news, and she usually does not watch TV. I have her reading The President's (Mr. Polk's) referenced article by PBS about Bin Laden now.

We both work in midtown in tall buildings, her's much more famous than mine. We both were evacuated from our buildings on Thursday around noontime when there were numerous bomb scares (90 in all) in NYC that day. No one really listened to our respective building security telling us it was okay to go back to work. We all did our own thing, and made up our own minds.

We keep the TV off most of the day 'cause we have a 3 year-old daughter and we do not want to expose her to this stuff. We watch the TV after she goes to bed, but to be honest, I do not want to watch all of the time anymore. I am trying to get back to a greater semblance of normalcy.

We went to the museum of natural history today to see the dinosaurs walking through central park to get there...the park was crowded but the museum was virtually empty. They checked our bags. It made sense not to really be there in the first place.

This is what it's like here, in NYC, for me. If we attack Afghanistan or whomever, do we increase the odds of us getting attacked again and again. Are the odds more likely that the attacks will be here in NYC where I work and live and in DC and other prominent places? Probably. Do I need to move? How can I reassure my wife? How can I be sure my wife and kids are safe day to day?

This is what I think about.

Good to hear from you, walk. If you ever want to spend a nice day out of the city, give me a ring. We'll take you around our little corner of NJ to get your mind off the city for awhile.

Thanks for the offer, PD, I appreciate that. My wife wanted to leave the city this weekend and visit our good friends near Spring Lake in NJ, but I wanted to stay here, near home, and also not have to deal potential bridge and tunnel closings over the weekend.

I do appreciate it though, and would love to get together again should your job take you back to the big yapple in the future (if you are inclined to even come to town).
