maybe it is a typo and they meant cross-dresser...
really I don't have a clue...the only sport that I have ever heard use the term cross-check is hockey. That would have nothing to do with the Padres...

A cross-checker is part of the scouting department who tries to effect consistency in player evaluations. Most clubs have area parttime scouts and regional fulltimers. Although the clubs use standard rating formats, there's no way to know whether a 5 from the guy in New England means the same thing as a 5 from the one in San Antonio.
When the reviews from area and regional scouts on a prospect are sufficiently positive, the club brings in its cross-checkers, who generally work on a national level, to confirm that a prospect people have been raving about is worth seeing. The cross-checkers can also take note of scouts who have pronounced tendencies to rate players too high or too low, and urge them to get with the organizational program.

But I don't think the Padres have the authority to name a NATIONAL cross-dresser. The people from New England and San Antonio will probably disagree with them. =)
