Brag about your fantasy baseball accompishments this year.

WWRs...how did you do compared to years past? Win any divisions? Best move of the year? Worst move? MidSeason?

Last year, my best team was around 5000 WWR. This year, I should have 1 team in the top 250, one team in the top 500, and another team, that had a messed up strategy and manager ;) , in the top 2000. I didn't do as well in MidSeason this year due to some awful early moves, but I should be in the top 1500 and around the top 1000, hopefully.

My best move would have to be getting Pujols early and hanging on to him through his mini-slumps when others sold him.

My worst move was not believing in LoDuca and Rollins early enough.

Through a couple of miracles and some loving from the heavens, I improved from a WWR around 10000 last season in Fullseason to a top 100 ranking this year .. Currently 40 going into last day, can't wait for my Smallworld Prize Pak

well i went from never playing a full season of SW baseball to a top 104 team going into the last day...hope having Moose and El duque was enough to get me over the hump into top 100.

Last time of the year doing this...

My first year of baseball, should have a Top 500 team. Probably could've gotten it higher had I not ignored the team because of the start of hockey, but oh well. :)

My best moves would have to be drafting Berkman and hopping on Loduca early. My worst move was probably waiting too long to hop on Pujols and Boone. I kept waiting for them to hit the ground, and they never did.

And as a side note, I finished with a 10th place in all of Yahoo's Public leagues. Not as great a feat as Smallworld, but fun none-the-less. :)

I have come to the conclusion that my gift is better suited to traditional Roto rather than smallworld. Something in my phyche just does not sync with playing the super-lemming.

I completely ran away with the Political Gurus League finishing more than 25 pts ahead of #2 in a season that will be hard to ever duplicate.

In Swirve which I am better at than SW my best team finished @110 unless yesterday was better than I think. Bad management around the WTC disaster didn't help but who is to say it didn't hurt my competition worse.

I will finish @1200-1300 SW and I really should have been around 600 at least as I was last year. There was a month just after the ASB when I could do no wrong picking pitchers and had I spent my saved up PT's at that time who knows. I will never save pitcher trades when I have that feeling again. Instead I saved my PT's till the last month when every stud I could now afford just would not come thru for me. I spent the whole last 2 months with a spare 10 mil going to waste. Had there been a few more expensive 'must haves' I would have done better. A strange year with no stud first baseman stepping up so I sat with Helton underperforming too often.

Did lousy in 500K which was my only Fullseason game played from the start this year ... quite a comeuppance from last year's success there.

On the bright side, though, I had a very good first ever attempt at the Midseason Game, with both of my "normal" teams finishing in the top 100 (I also had an NL-only tag team). The better of the 2 finished with a WWR of 8 - 2nd only to Guru himself in the Gurupie Midseason standings. The WWR of 8 is my best finish ever in a SmallWorld/TSN game.

Best move (HT) was picking up Sosa as my first "big buy", and Pujols/Catalanotto in mid August - that differentiation was big. Worst move was Piazza a couple times - he always seemed to be getting hot, then did not keep it going when I had him. Ugh. Waste of trades and cash.

Point of reference is a great measuring tool. In
3 previous SW years, never in top 1000. This year
a 290ish FS team in philliephan tribute league. In
midseason won the Gurupie tagteam contest. My NL team finished 1st in the gurupie "tagteam NL only" division (a 247th WW finish).

best move...acquiring Toronto's CATFISH as partner in tagteam competition and an uncanny ability to avoid picking pitchers before they imploded.

Best finishes:

#1 in the free game at PSC. (Interesting sidelight - this game offered 6 trades per week for a 20-man roster, but also let you buy extra trades at the rate of $1.50 per trade [real money]. I never bought an extra trade until the next to last week, when I decided to spend a few shekels to hopefully solidify my top position. I ended up paying $7.50 total. However, the guy who finished in second place consistently made 9-12 trades per week all year. I'd estimate that he spent well over $100 this season for the "free" game!)

#3 in TSN Midseason. So close, and yet so far. The winner bolted up from out of nowhere in the last 2 days, having saved a few pitcher trades for the end. Never saw him coming - not that it would have mattered. And ill-fated Estes start on Friday night was the coup de grace, although I made some well timed moves in August into Sosa, and Vazquez, and also drafted Oswalt, which was a real boon. Tried to be very efficient for most of my pitching moves.

#1 Sandbox H-T-H Gurupie league: Finished with a 2 game lead. I'm particularly proud of this one, because I started the season at 1-7. Won on the strength of hitting, with only mediocre pitching.

#1 (tie) in $500K: Tied with jumpball as the first to ever reach the hallowed underground. Failed to capitalize on Aaron Boone down the stretch, allowing jumpball to catch me, though.

Disappointing finishes:

Only ranked #255 in SW fullseason. Was up to a #250 rank in June, but could never move up from there. Not sure why, either, when I was having such a good second half in midseason. Strong competition, I guess, and probably an overreliance on high priced studs.

Ranked #13 in the SW pay game, but that team had actually 500 SWP less than my free team, so that's a very misleading ranking. My free fullseason team would have ranked #10 in the pay game.

#10 (out of 10) in Sandbox Roto Keeper League (another Gurupie league). Nomar killed me, as did a crappy season by Alphonso. Those were two of my keepers. Pitching was also a problem (Derek Lowe, e.g.). Started slow, and maintained the pace.

#8 (out of 10) in an ESPN roto league. Hurt by a closer implosion (Lowe, Mantei), and lousy seasons from Steve Finley & Tim Salmon, among others. After being in a distant last place at midseason, I decided to shift gears and try to get out of the cellar as my ultimate objective, which was no easy task. So my 8th place finish was somewhat satisfying (thanks Mike V. and Kevin L. for making the comeback possible!) Picking up Thome in a mid-year trade out of D. Lowe certainly didn't hurt any.

Swirve: Teams finished ranked in the 30s. Not bad, not great. I've never excelled at the Swirve games like some others around here.

My season was disappointing. Last year I finished WWR #53 & #125 with my 2 teams & had high hopes for this season. Started poorly & never able to get it going (both teams finishing is 1200s). Blew too many trades (foolish, I know) & then didn't have them when I needed them or just plain bad picks. But I still enjoyed playing, there's always next year...
Now maybe I can concentrate on getting some work done.

Had 2 full season teams and both finished in the top 100. 31st and 80th I think, by far my best season. Last year my 2 teams were in the 300-500 range. Top team never had a reliever, and my second team started with 3. Held Nen and Rivera all season, dumped Benitez about a month in. I still can't figure out how to keep up with top gurupies in roster value, finished with 103 mil and 97 mil. Luckily there were enough cheap producers to stay competitive.

Well, this was my first season in smallworld baseball, and I finished a shocking #9 WWR! I have to credit having the year off on a deferred salary leave from my job for this, had a lot of spare time to concentrate on it. No way will I ever be able to top that.
I was also about 56 in basketball with around 4 weeks left, when I left my team invalid by mistake.:(
Now that I am back at work, I expect to wallow in mediocrity. Thanks to all my rotoguru.com division members for a competitive year!

first time of playin for me and i've a team placed 34th and another in the top 2000. My best moves have been Sammy Sosa, jose cruz early and lately, freddy garcia and the 3 weeks i've not made a change because of holydays......passing from 200 wwr to 95, gaining money and trades that i've spent in the following weeks....thanks closers!!!!....i figure where i should have been if i wouldn't have followed my team since the beginning....;-)

In a word: yecch. Four teams in TSN FS were 122, 181, 290, 391. My main goal is always "finish better than last year" and I blew that one big-time.

On the bright side: won a face-to-face 4x4 roto league. Through tightly crossed fingers, came 5 runs short of having to eat a Royals uniform.

Finished at a disappointing 195 wwr...Disappointing because I finished #100 last year.

I spent some time this year in the top 60 but couldn't sustain it. Looking forward to next year!

Finished 15 WWR in FS, which is a bit low considering I was #1 for a few days in May, and was up to #3 as late as August IIRC. But considering I was #56 with just a few weeks left in the year, I'll take it.

My roto luck was hard. Out of 5 leagues, I won 2 of them(both yahoo), but finished very close 2nds in a yahoo league, sandbox league and commissioner.com league. I am proud to be top 2 all around, but I could have easily gone 5 for 5.

First year and just had one team. It finished #157 I think. I should be happy, but I spent most of the season in the top 50 peaking at #8 in early August. Other than the late season slump I couldn't ask for more.

Thanks to all for the insight and info that helped keep me afloat.

Lurker here, (When your internet time is evenings on the west coast, only Azbacker seems to be posting) 3rd year in SW/TSN 2nd with RotoGuru. started the season with 2 goals >$100M and <10,000 rank. You guys helped me get to a 220 ranking in mid June. Then I had an across the board month long pitcher implosion, that dropped me to 1,500. Worst move was using up all those pitcher trades geting out of people that had just imploded buying people that were about to. Best move was setting up the team to go away for a month. came back to find I was back to 800. I then Managed my back to a 989 finish. 8^}

Started out strong in MS (up to 450 or so), but then some stupid "with the pack" moves cost me, and some purely boneheaded plays knocked me out. My only MS team, and I finished 3500 or so. Yeech.

My first year playing SmallWorld...I surpassed any expectations I had going into the year. Never had heard of SmallWorld until I was invited to join a division from my cousin and my brother with a bunch of public attornies from Chicago. Well my first goal of winning that division was easier than I thought as I was about 4000 points ahead by the end and finished #69 WWR with my one Full Season team. I guess this was the most satisfying team as now I have local bragging rights over my cousin and brother who both fancied themselves as good fantasy players =) I really am happy with #69 as the first month of the season I was still learning how to play and was as high as #5000. Did very well earning money with this team all year.

Two midseason teams. #75 & #143 WWR. Happy to get in the top 100 again. Really ignored money with my two midseason teams and it seemed to work out pretty well with all of the high priced pitchers going down. Devoted most of my time to full season and NHM so was very happy to still do well in MidSeason.

Full Season No Headed Monster...really enjoyed this league. Finished #1 and #5 in the division. Kind of hid out around 5-6 place all year saving trades and then made a run at first place with a massive gururotation the last 2-3 weeks. Didn't really solidify first place until the last day of the season.

6th place in the NL only division...

My only real failure was no trade midseason where I finished last...I figure that is a crap shoot anyway.

Of course I have to give a lot of credit to the people on this board...really helped develop a winning strategy and makes the game itself infinitely more enjoyable.

Well, my breakdown is as follows...

My best team was my MS team, finishing wwr 381..

My FS team finished WWR 822...

The other teams are too horrible to mention ranging from WWR 3000 up to 10000...

My best move was Sasaki during the first half and knowing that Arod would pull out of his slump very early in the season...

Worst moves were being to stubborn to drop Berkman when he was slumping(had him from day one on all of my teams and said, barring injury, would hold him till the end) Also, in my AL only team, feeling too comfortable with my 600 pt lead, knowing darn well that the people behind me had tons of trades...

Also, my traveling w/o internet access killed a lot of my teams, I had WWR 400 with my FS team, took a wek vacation, came back and was up to 800 WWR....

All together, I did better than last year, where I could never get below 2500 WWR, my goal this season was to get under 1000 WWR and thanks to this site, I was able to do that....

Not a terribly good year on WS/TSN but at least I finally learned how to discipline myself to make $.(still don't like doing but at least i learned how)
(1) Hardball #19 however as a counter to guru's observation that his total points were lower than the free league it was also significantly harder to make $ in the pay league- In fact I know neither guru nor I ever reached $100 M, so you couldn't buy the studs as fast.
(2) TSN- One team about WWR 600, one at 1000. Overall pretty disappointing what with all that $ I finally learned to make.
(3) Won CNN/SI H2H by 1 game winning 22 of last 24. I am proud of that one.
(4) Won 2 of 3 Sandbox straight point leagues losing only my own Invitational by 42 (we had 4 players within 50 points and 4 lead changes the last week) Still the best league I ever played in.
(5) Swerve again quite disappointing two 110-115 finishes. Just can't get that one down and what's worse I just watched guru pull away from me in september.
(6) #3 overall FSU midseason where I totally blew a $1000 prize in the last two weeks to two teams coming out of nowhere. Still not bad for a first try.
(7) Won or finished 2nd in disputed playoff championship baseball keeper league (12 team)now on sportsline.

Overall a not unsatisfying season but I am really mourning the loss of Sandbox my primary site. I really really hate sportsline so it looks like I will be able to concentrate entirely on TSN next year. I guess I just like playing draft sites against 9 to 13 others than fighting 350,000 other teams in cap games.
As an aside how can sportsline be so dumb as too scrap the best draft format on the net for their own inferior product and then to subject all sandbox players to the largest spam attack I have ever seen while cutting all technical services. I would have paid to pay good money to play Sandbox formats. Now sportsline doing a Prodigy with Sandbox but where oh where is my fantasy AOL clone.(For those neophytes Prodigy effectively made AOL out of nothing through very bad business decisions driving all their customers to AOL, Delphi and a couple other neophyte service providers). Oh Paul Allen why hast thou foresaken us !!!!!

Mediocre season, but involved in some good
division races.

I did manage to win the prestigious Battle of
the Ages division. An incredible late run by F
Gump shaves the margin to a 16 point
difference, but it was too little, too late. WWR -
80.

Lost out to Flake in my FS division by 200
points. WWR - 1245 (after 2 consecutive top
100 years). Injuries early cost me big time.

FS Pay game - WWR 20 and finished with 1
pitcher trade! LOL....just saw that.

I had a very disappointing season in most respects. Last year I finished WWR 74th (I think) in FS.

This year I "struck out on my own" in more ways than one.

I thought I could out-manuever both the lemmings and the gurupies. I was hit with the hard, cold fact that I could not.

Finished WWR 8116, even though a month ago I was +12,000.

I only played one team this year and finished with a wwr of 1201. very un TF like but i had a good time. i just did'nt have a lot of extra time this summer and fantasy sports took a back seat to golf, boating and my daughters wedding.

I really backed off fantasy sports and got a life so to speak. on the positive side i finished #2 in my face to face NL roti league and that should net me about $600.00 bucks.

Yea, right, KB8. : ) You still topped the Gurupie standings. Kudos to you belly brother!

Surprisingly awesome year TSN/SW-wise for me. Not so hot of a year elsewhere, however.

I'll start with my traditional NL only Roto league:
Another so-so auction draft for me. Fell out of the bidding on guys I liked way too early and ended up with little HR potential (thanks to Rondell White), even less speed, and no saves to speak of...again. Obviously a rebuilding year...again. Sold off my pitching in July to get some more future on my team. At least I'll have Furcal next year...along with a host of others. Looking forward having a good batch of young guys that are signed for 2002 and 2003. Next year is the 3rd year in my 4 year plan. : )

Sandbox...bad year. 'Nuff said. Yahoo? No better. I skipped the Swirve game this year.

Did I mention I had a good year playing TSN/SW? Good, I saved the best for last. : ) Seeking to improve my #95 ranking from last year, I started out with 3 teams. I decided to draft 2 more teams after opening day for the heck of it. Occupied the #1 spot on May 14th and even stayed there for a of couple days or so. Finished 2nd in Gurupie standings behind KB8 at #5 on my best team. Placed the other 4 teams #7, #26, #45 & #66. Not too shabby I suppose. I have since vowed to draft only 2 or 3 teams at the most. : )

A thousand thank yous to Guru and everyone here in our fine community. Without rotoguru.com, I'd just be roto. Now, go out and subtract my multiple teams from your WWR accordingly! : )

Peace,
Pistol

I finished 121 WWR. I might have finished top 100 except I (in my infinite wisdom) picked a pitcher who didn't pitch the last day. If he had a 90+ outing, I would have finished in the top 100. Oh well.

In my first year of FS (last year started with MS for me) I finished up WR 254 which I was very happy with although I dropped from WR 177 in about a week (poor pitcher selection and strong runs by Jackie Robinson and Hippy Baseball, aargh). I finished 5th in rotoguru.com division which I had gotten into late (was 13th when I got in).

In MS I won the No-Headed Monster Division (YAY!) with a WR of 666 (yikes)and finished better than my 6th place team in Rotoguru XIV.

My best moves were picking up LoDuca early, Pujols early, and Boone early. Pitcher moves were picking up Vazquez right before he went on his tear and having Hudson early. Also got Moyer.

Worst moves were dropping Beltran when he got "injured" last week and then he went on a huge points run this weekend. Also, the last 2-3 weeks I picked every sucky pitcher possible, dropped Halladay before his 179 pt game, and skipped a Schilling start.

Overall, I'm pretty happy and lookin forward to next year. Good Luck to everyone in football and hockey!

...as i am more of a hoops and football player, I was happy w/ my FIRST ever season of playing baseball...

No full season teams, but I got bored and decided to give Mid-seasona try..

skankboy4 ended up #35 WWR and won RotoGuru XIV 1/2 division by almost 600 points

skankboy3 ended up #221 WWR and won Small World Order division by about 550 points

Best decision: using 3 c-losers per team to start with which allowed me to rotate starters virtually at will and make money early. Picking the hot cheap c-losers helped too.

Worst decision: Adding Rickey Henderson the night before he decided to postpone his chase of the records ;(

Finished 97 in the world on my top FS team. Had been as high as 20 something but some bad pitcher trades hurt me down the stretch. Actually dropped to 102 before the last day but Randy Wolf got me back in the top 100. My other FS team was in the 400's. MS not worth mentioning, I was to preoccupied with getting my FS team in the top 100 after finishing around 150 last year.

This was my best FS ever. The last two seasons I have done well in the MS game, finishing in the Top 700 both times but FS I could never stay successful for a whole season- never cracking the Top 10000!

This season I was 32! I won the XIV Division after finishing 16th last season.

This was a HUGE confidence booster. I have to give propers to Occhy who was a big help with my pitching rotation and choices. He was in XIV and helped even though he was chasing me for first. Thanks, Ock!

I was also in an AL-only roto league and managed to finish 8th on the last day instead of 6th- actually a blessing since there is no $ for 6th. Next season's draft is in reverse order- I'm 3rd instead of 5th!

A fun year overall.

First time I've played since '97, so i can't complain.

FS around 150 last time i checked -- a good finish after dropping from 600 to 1200 in june.

MS missed the first day; cracked the top 100 on the last day.

Best move: Giambi after the all-star break.

Worst moves: every pitcher i picked up for a month after pedro went down.

The thing that took me a while to learn was that you can't make up for bad pitching days by trading the pitcher. Have a plan and stick to it.

My biggest "oops" on the year was not getting RJ in that continuation game where there was discussion that his points might not count if you hadn't owned him when the game had started the day before. I think he got 170 points.

I regressed: finished #90, down 14 slots from my #76 finish last year.

How did Blue Hen do?

I tried to save up trades in SW then couldn't find the motivation to spend them, and gave up on the game entirely. The SW concept doesn't hold my interest as much as it used to.

Yahoo Roto League - 9 teams, 12 cats (R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, SLG, W, CG, SO, SV, ERA, WHIP), no pitching limits, straight roto. At one point, I had 9's across the board in hitting, with decent pitching. At this point, I traded for Randy Johnson (Park and Kent for Sweeney and Randy right before Sweeney started to heat up) and wound up leading in wins and strikeouts, but I finished 3rd in stolen bases and some of my other hitting stats fell a bit. This league was never close.

ESPN 8 team AL/NL 5x5 H2H Roto league. I went 9-1 the first week and never looked back. My NL only team had Schilling, Morris, Park, and Maddux from the draft, and hitters to match.

ESPN 10 team 5x5 Roto league. I was barely in first, so I packaged together all my guys doing well (Buehrle, Fick, Glanville, Sabathia, T Walker, Jordan, T Hunter, etc) and got Piazza, Randy, and a bunch of other studs. That solidified my spot, and I won handily.

ESPN 12 team 5x5 Roto league, aka "The Money League". Despite picking Jason Kendall in the 2nd round, drafting no closers, trading Cliff Floyd for Jason Isringhausen, and trading Larry Walker in a deal where Darin Erstad was the centerpiece, I managed to come back from 4th to 2nd on the last day of the season (thanks Richie Sexson!), and managed "get some money".

So that's it! I played lots of SSB this season and didn't do so well there.

This was my 2nd fully year playing fantasy sports, but I honestly think that this FS baseball season was my first where I totally knew what I was doing heading into the season.

I was vacationing in Canada in July, and I only checked my team twice a week, which killed my team just before the all star break. Other than that, everything went pretty smoothly. I still managed to finish the season at 51, which is a rank that I am extremely satisfied with. I don't know if I'll ever have the time/motivation/dedication/luck that is required to finish in the top 10 in these games. I just don't know how KB8ers does what he does, it's absolutley amazing. Either he has hours upon end to do research (the guy has like 20 teams), or he is actually in the major leagues as a pitcher, serving up gopher balls to all of his not-so-widely owned hitters. Either way, kudos to all of those players like him who have the success that he does; I know what it takes just to finish where I did. Thanks to all the fellow gurupies for making it a great SW/TSN year. Most of all, thanks to Guru for doing what he does with the site, and for sparking my interest in these games. I guess I'll see you all in hoops!

589 in FS baseball,

was about 15 million down compared to the average gurupie roster value when I was placed into the gurupie standings. Made my money too late! Being a rook, I was considering on giving up, but then I found out about this site!!!

worst move: never getting A-Rod until the final week of the season. I missed out on a hell of a lot of points just because I don't like him. Another point of stupidity was getting Nomar early when he came back and holding until he was done.....A-Rod, where are you.

best move: Boone very early, "luck," and getting on Bonds much earlier than most.

500K MS, 4th in div. This was very fun. I din't pay attention to my team, and then I saw it skyrocket. Horrible decisions at pitcher cost me a title b/c I did have quite a few stocked up while being less than 300 back about a month ago.

I had a few other teams, but they sucked!

I finished wwr 24 by far my best finish ever. I was holding around 18 or 19 but went with kile on the last day which blew it for me. MS I finished at wwr 108 dropped at of the top 100 by the aforementioned Kile. I am very happy with my year though.

Finished 8th in Smallworld, my best ever. I reached 2nd briefly, but took some poor pitching decisions down the stretch. My thanks go out to Javier Vazquez, without whom I could not have done it.

Heartbreaking
I spent the overwhelming majority of the season with at least one team in the top 100. With only 2 days left I had one team at #85 and another at #97. Finished at #103 and #118.

I think I did a good job this year of balancing money with points. Guys like Berkman and Pujols made this pretty easy. I can't really pinpoint any key moves that I made. For the most part, I got good starts from my pitchers. I also did a better job conserving trades (especially pitcher) which was a big factor in my success. I look forward to next year and a finish in the top 50.

This was my breakout year thanks to the Roto Guru site.

Smallworld FS finished 22nd.
Swirve finished 6th.

I played one team in both games and my tip for people next year would be to focus on one team instead of multiple teams. I led the Swirve game for awhile in July but then started playing the Smallworld midseason game and I babysat for my brother's teams while he was out of town. I am convinced that cost me my competitiveness. Playing multiple teams does not increase your chances of winning, it hurts your ability to focus on improving one team.

Finished #1 in Smallworld baseball. It was my 1st year. I Credit my success to luck and Randy Wolf on the last day. I'm fairly new to the Guru site, however, I'm roughly 30,000 spots worse in football than I was in baseball so I will be checking in a little more often.

I finished a disappointing 143 after hovering around 75-90 in the final weeks. I made some boneheaded moves during the last few days (like Dempster) that really screwed me.

Let down season after finishing 84 last year.

All in all, not a bad season.

Good luck to everyone who is playing football. I'm currently 1400 in football, but I've yet to finish in the top 1000 in football. To me, smallworld football is a lot tougher than basketball and baseball.

Finished 605 in FS. I seemed to be more capable of making money than points. Mike Mussina was my biggest disappointment. Every time I picked him up he would get negative numbers. When I bypassed him he would get 100+ points. Being a Yankee fan I decided not to add him to my roster later in the year!

Thanks to all Gurupies for a fun season.
