Perusing ESPheN.com and found this article about resurrecting Babe Ruth's piano.

The best part of this story is this line, regarding who is sponsoring the event:

"The search is sponsored by the Restoration Project, a rehabilitation program for adults with mental illness..."

Yeah, its almost baseball time again...

Specialist probes pond for Ruth piano

By Jenn Abelson, Globe Staff Correspondent, 11/16/2002

SUDBURY — He's not even a Red Sox fan, but underwater search expert John P. Fish is helping in the hunt for a piano that Babe Ruth, as legend has it, pushed into Willis Pond — and perhaps break the Curse of the Bambino.

Fish, who searched for the black boxes of the planes that hit the World Trade Center and found parts of TWA Flight 800, was optimistic about locating the piano, but said he needs several days to analyze data after trolling the calm waters yesterday for nearly two hours. His high-tech expedition in an 18-foot Boston Whaler involved a satellite positioning system and a torpedo-looking device that measures the strength of the earth's magnetic field.

Fish, of American Underwater Search and Survey in Bourne, began exploring the mile-wide pond close to Ruth's former cottage at 7:30 a.m. He discovered eight ''targets'' in the water, where high levels of ferrous molecules were detected. These could indicate metals from the piano's frame.

"I am optimistic,'' Fish said of his volunteer efforts, which were coordinated by the state's Board of Underwater Archeological Resources.

The movement to recover the piano began last year with Sudbury resident Kevin Kennedy, who remembered the legend that Ruth, either drunk or just plain tired of the out-of-tune instrument, had pitched the piano out of his cottage into a Sudbury Pond. (According to the story, in the winter of 1918 during a party, Ruth and some fellow revelers may have pushed the upright onto the ice-covered pond. When it thawed, the instrument sank.)

Kennedy enlisted the support of his boss at the Restoration Project, a furniture refinishing program for the mentally ill, to help find the piano and end the Curse of the Bambino, the 84-year streak the Red Sox have endured without winning a World Series since Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees.

Over the past year, divers have scanned the pond twice for the piano, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

They did however find Nomar Garciaparra's old Buick and a refrigerator that Pedro Martinez had grown tired of.
