0 Subject: Swirve advice request

I'm making the shift to Swirve this year and am looking for some advice. I'm starting from scratch but don't want to be left in the starting gate.

What is a good early season strategy? I noticed that you can earn points without a full roster. Would it be a good idea to pursue that line of thinking or fill a roster by signing position-player "prospects" to short contracts and getting a few good starting pitchers?

I guess what I'm asking is, Do you run it like TSN or is there a different mindset I need to have?

C1 - What you definitely need to do in Swirve is use all 5 pitcher spots AND the 2 wildcard spots to rotate pitchers. You must sign pitchers to a minimum 8-day contract, so the debate here has been (you may want to look for a thread "Swirve Baseball is Up" for more info) whether or not to cancel the contract early after the 8th day and get new pitchers, or whether to hold for that 3rd start before rotating again.

In terms of position players, catcher has tended to be a 'luxury'. If you had enough $$ for 5 days you could plug one in, but I wouldn't want to miss a RJ start because I had Brad Ausmus in there for a couple days.

In terms of the contract length of position players, that is the big trick. The 50% of their salary penalty is pretty steep, but the reward for hitting the jackpot is pretty steep as well. beastiemiked won last year without having players signed to year-long contracts, so it CAN be done.

Good luck.

Thanks. That's the kind of thing I was looking for.

The year-long contract makes me nervous because it could really come back and bite you. I probably won't be venturing there until late in the season, but by then it might not be worth it.

If there are decent prospects that look really cheap (priced in the mid-teens or so), they might be worth a full year contract. If they work out, you have a leg up on most of the competition. If they bomb, the cost of terminating isn't tremendous.

For example, last year, Ichiro was initially priced at $15,750. He ended up the year at about $40K. There may not be similar examples this year, but if there are (I haven't even really studied the situation yet), they are worth the risk.

Thanks, Guru. I'll take that under advisement.

When might we expect Swirve to get on board with guys like Blalock and Burroughs? Is this a "Swirve thing" I'll have to get used to, or are they pretty good about updating, IPOing, etc?

I saw where there was a concern about the way they listed players alphabetically and left some guys off their teams. That seems to have been corrected.

Usually, once a player logs an AB, or IP, he will be added. They are usually good with it.

with the eight day pitcher hold-

among the already "semi"-debated strategy's.

picking up a cheap spot starter occasionally, or even a #5 starter from teams like the dbacks or mariners would seem like a less viable option this year...

Does the game start on Sunday or Monday?

Game starts on Monday. I don't know why, but that's very clearly stated.

So don't start off with Colon or Washburn.

Swirve's practice has always been to add new players the day after their first appearance in a game.

Ugh, why Monday? So much for trying to catch that one extra day of effieciency.

I started my team yesterday and added some more today. In the process of doing so, I noticed that guys from yesterday have contracts that expire a day before the guys I signed today.

If this stands to be true, why wouldn't I sign guys I ^know^ are going to be on short-term contracts early to get them out of their contracts early? Or is all this moot, and all contracts will "go into effect" on April 1?

I believe it's a bug. The same thing happened to me yesterday, but they're all the same now- ending on the earlier day(4th/7th rather than a few that were stuck on 5th/8th until I logged in again- much to my annoyance on the pitchers).

usually you cant make changes to your team until midnight the day before the season starts. Then all contracts go into effect.

I also made the switch to Swirve and after several years of smallworld, it might take me some time to get a handle on things. I'm hoping that I have a great draft---any suggestions on this team?
