This software was purchased (licensed) from cgi-factory several years ago. I made a lot of modifications since then, but the basic framework is intact. It is written in Perl, and must be run on a Unix server. Their current version is called Advanced Message Board v4.52, and it sells for about $60. As I recall, the license allows you to run one copy of the softaware on one server, but you get the source code and can make whatever modifications you want - if you want.

Two PHP based message boards: One that is becoming very popular is vBulletin. It's $85/year, with full access to all updates, or $160 outright, with one year of access to all updates. From past experience, the $85 lease is better because they make a lot of updates. A free version that rivals vBulletin is phpBB. The features aren't quite as rich (and the server seems to be down right now), but hey, it's free. Their new version, phpBB2, really does rival vBulletin, but there are some bugs here and there that they're working on. But again, it's free.
