Now that we are riding high after a 5-1 homestand its safe to open up this thread.

We have really taken advantage of matchups against Nomo, and the lineup right now is as strong as its been since our '97 squad. Let's hope they hold on to Floyd. The starting staff is still getting the job done, and the tandom of Tejera, Looper, and Nunez make things interesting but have still been successful as of late.

Could this be the year we get back to the top?

1st Place smells awful good.

A good young pitching staff Florida have got, but no studs, and they'll struggle against the better hitting teams unfortunately. I really like Nunez as the closer now, he's got some good stuff.

As for the hitting, Wilson and Lowell have talent, but really there is no protection for Floyd, and the better teams will just pitch around their only really talented hitter. So I think the future looks bright for Florida, But as the Guru's stats tell, opposing pitchers tend to score really well when playing them.

I disagree with you a bit. Dempster and Burnett will continue to pitch well. I have seen no indication that there outings have been based on poor opponents or flukes.

And Lowell and Wilson are quality hitters. Yes, Wilson always leads the world in K's, but that will happen when you drive in around 100 runs a year. Lowell is fast becoming a very difficult out. This is no fluke, he is much improved. Lee too will drive in runs and hit for power. Right now opposing teams aren't sure who to pitch too. The offense has scored 45 runs in their last 7 games. They also beat Johnson and Schilling a few weeks back.

I'd like to hear an assessment of Kevin Millar from some fans who watch him play. Do you guys expect him to play at the level his '01 numbers indicate? Do you think he is likely to improve on those numbers? Notable flaws in his game? I currently have him (on the DL) on my Yahoo team, but am unsure about what to expect from him for the season. Is Eric Owens a threat to his PT when he returns?

Millar is very much a question mark. No idea when he may actually come back either. As recent as last week he still has pain in his ribcage.

Excluding this injury I would have projected him at 25HR's and 100RBI's, give or take a little. I would have had his BA down a bit from last year, probably around .280

With Owens playing so well I wouldn't be surprised to see Millar share PT. Then again, if they deal Floyd both will be on the field.

At this point expect his numbers to be down quite a bit from last year, and be prepared to look for others if he stays out too much longer.

sorry Farn was wasn't meaning to imply the pitchers wont continue to pitch well, but there is a difference between being a team with some good pitchers such as dempster, Burnett and Penny, and a team with Mussina, Wells, Hernandez ,Clemens and Rivera. As i said Florida have a handy young staff, but they aren't in the same league as NYY, ATL, OAK, or even ARZ.

Wilson, Millar, Lowell are also handy and talented, but they aren't in the same league as the 2-6 spots on most other teams. Floyd is the only star on the Florida team, and they may even need to trade him out yet.

If I was Florida and was offered Moose, Clemens, El Duque and Wells and Rivera straight up for Penny, Dempster and AJ, Beckett and Vlad, I would say no.

I was going to start a Marlins thread myself Farn, but wasn't sure how much response it would receive. Not many South Florida Gurupies on the boards or Marlins fans for that matter I think.

Anyway, I watch almost every game and like what I've seen so far this year. The Fish are definitely playing like a team. Every day someone else comes through like Redmond did yesterday. Another positive is the fact they are winning with Penny and Beckett hurt. Penny will come back today. Hopefully he and the rest of the staff can survive Coors.

Regarding Cliff, there is no chance he will be a Marlin next year. Loria will not pay the top dollars he is looking for and another team out there will. That's no fault of the new ownership, just the problem with baseball in general. Small market teams can't keep their superstars. However, a good GM can get talent in return. Look at the Mariners for example. Even Dombrowski did it here after the 1997 season. Still wish we had him. The Floyd situation is a tough one. Trade him and the remaining 5,000 fans are pissed. Keep him, and he leaves next year for no compensation to the Fish. I think you have to trade him. Another long shot I came up with is trade CJ and his high salary and use that money to resign Cliff. However, CJ took less money to play here and he is homegrown talent. Bottom line is they will probably trade Cliff to try and get something in return.

Enjoy the Fish now though. 21-16 and sitting in first place. If they can go 7-7 on this epic road trip that starts today in Colorado (then SF, Cincy, and NYM), I will be happy.

Thanks for the thread Farn! GO FISH!

damn, i wish i lived in south florida. Not too many fans in upstate NY. :)

Yeah, I see Floyd being traded too, the problem is that if they are in a pennant race in a month how can the owner justify trading him. They would be calling for that man's head. Even loading up on young talent wouldn't cut it. All he can do is hope they fall out of the race if he knows they can't resign him.

And I agree with post #6. I wouldn't trade those Marlins pitchers for that yankees crew either. Yeah, we would have a legit shot at reaching the WS, but as enjoyable as the 97 title was, 98 was too miserable to experience again.

Farn, what the hell are you doing up there?! ;-)

I guess you don't get to see too many games huh? I have only been to three games so far this year, but I have watched almost every game on TV. Maybe with satellite you can watch the Marlins up there. If you need any info let me know.

Time for lunch!

poor college student can't afford satellite. i go to the bar whenever i can, but they never look too thrilled when i say "could you put the Marlins/Expos game on". :)

I see them whenever they play Atlanta, the Mets, Cubs, and Yanks and White Sox for interleague.

Going to see them on friday night in San Fran though. Dempster is scheduled to start too. I am psyched.

its time to bench Johnson. Redmond needs to be in the lineup everyday. His bat is too strong to be on the bench. And the kids are gonna walk batters anyway so his catching prowess won't make much difference.

Who will K more: Wilson or Lee?
and will that number be higher than the individual walk totals of Dempster or Burnett?

and we need a new setup man. Looper is killing me.
