0 Subject: The Humidor Effect on Coors Field

As we all know by now, the use of a humidor by Rockies' management has taken away part of the charm of Coors Field---for hitters anyway. I have a few questions for any that would care to respond:

1)Has the humidor itself been effective in diminishing the number of home runs or is it mainly better pitching?

2)Are there any sentiments that a humidor will be as effective in the heat of the summer in Denver as it seems to be now?

3) What will be the long-lasting effects of this latest phenomenon? For instance, will other teams, with MLB's blessing, be allowed to do whatever is necessary to alter the integrity of the game as they see fit?

4) What about Enron Field, et al? Would a humidor in the heat and humidity of Houston be considered as a reasonable alternative to the way the game is played there now?

5) Does using a humidor, in your opinion, constitute going against the integrity of the game?

Thank you for your comments.

It is not like they are soaking the balls in water or anything. If you read the articles about the Colorado humidor it is simply a room that is kept at 40% humidity and a constant temperature. These figures match what the environment where the balls are stored for major league baseball. The problem in colorado is normally there is no humidity and the balls tended to dry out as the season went on and became harder. I don't have a problem with it.

If they were manipulating the balls outside of what is normal I would have a problem with it.

I wish I could find the article about a team in the past who were considered "cheaters" for using a humidor on their balls (ewww). They were saying it added a 1/4 ounce to weight of the ball. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it was significant enough.

I would have thought with the geat hitting team Colorado have, and the not quite as good pitching rotation, they'd be better off not using the humidor. That way they can just allow Walker and Helton and their mates to out slug opposing teams.

That's the problem. They don't have a great hitting team. Not even close. They have invested heavily in pitching.

but even though Colorado have invested a lot of money in pitching, they still don't have any studs, infact their whole pitching staff is average even on the road. Maybe they just pay so much because it is the only way to attract pitchers to play for them.

I actually like their hitting team, I rate Walker and Helton as the best #3 and #4 tandem in baseball at the moment.

Splits for the last 3 years.

Helton
Home: 188 G, .387 AVG, .755 SLG, .482 OBP, 60 HR, 196 RBI, 199 R
Away: 178 G, .309 AVG, .601 SLG, .403 OBP, 42 HR, 106 RBI, 106 R

L.Walker
Home: 135 G, .375 AVG, .699 SLG, .459 OBP, 34 HR, 131 RBI, 124 R
Away: 135 G, .287 AVG, .499 SLG, .399 OBP, 23 HR, 77 RBI, 76 R

It's clear that Helton and L.Walker are not quite as studly away from Coors as they are at Coors. They wouldn't be the "studs" that they are right now if they played for any other team. If the humidor does it's job, it could spell doom for L.Walker and Helton the next time their contracts are up because their numbers will drop way off.

Mike Hampton is a stud when he's on, Denny Neagle is proven, and John Thompson has been good so far this year. The Rockies money is in their pitching, and their hitting is showing it's true colors this year. Helton is the only stud hitter in Colorado, Walker is past his prime and injury prone, and all their other hitters have benefited from the juiced up environment in past years, which they don't have this year. I'm all for the humidi-balls being used to bring some integrity to the mile high game.

RSF...ESPN-Neyer had an article on past ball modifying cheaters...IIRC they had the balls were in like a 100% humidity room...the balls were practically soaking to get that extra weight.

The balls in the Colorado humidor are kept in basically a normal environment (only 40% humidity)...simulates the environment where MLB stores their balls, I think in St Louis. It is not like they are really modifying the ball...just keeping it at the manufactured recommended environment. The balls do not end up being any different than balls at most major league parks...just keeps the balls at the correct specification. Makes sense to me.
