Statistical oddity... I think.

I'm in a Sandbox roto league with 9 other Gurupies. My pitching ERA ranks 3rd best in the league, but my WHIP is dead last. That seems very unusual. Normally, those two categories seem to be very highly correlated. And in fact, no one else in the league has more than a 2 position differential in those two categories.

Not sure there's any statistical insights here. Just thought it was odd. Anyone else have a similar disparity in their league?

I've seen the same Guru. By any chance do you have some relievers that tend to give up hits/walks that just love score inherited runners?

OR they can't EVER get a straight save with out getting at least 2 on base?!?!

Some of the ones that I can think of w/o looking at stats seem to be like Mesa, Jiminez, Osuna--even Stewart a little there for awhile.

Do you happen to have Ishii on your team?

Guru -

I was just laughing about that very fact 3 minutes ago! And just when I thought I had a chance to run away with that league, you have come on like gangbusters and my pitchers have gone into a collective slump (save for Pedro, thank goodness) that has brought me back to the peleton.

Who in the heck traded you Randy Johnson??? Arrrrrrgh.

Right Ishii, leads the league in walks, but ERA of 4.19 is nothing special. Burnett is second with 76, has a 3.54 ERA.

He does have Russ Ortiz.....but his staff has been revamped over the year. Who was it that tanked your WHIP, Guru??

I traded away Vlad Guerrero for Randy Johnson about a month ago. In a non-keeper league, that would have been a no-brainer, as I really needed pitching and my hitting was in great shape. In a keeper league (as this one is), it was harder to do, because I lose Vlad forever - and Randy is no spring chicken. However, I decided that this was the time to go for it, and so in traditional MLB fashion, I sold the future for a pennant run now - and so far it's working out. Not bad for a team that finished in the cellar last year, eh?

I'm not sure who torpedoed my WHIP, although early in the season I did start Todd Ritchie a few times (yikes), and also Danys Baez. I think I had another bum as well. But those guys should have hurt my ERA as well.

My closers are Guardado and Percival. No issues there.

"Not bad for a team that finished in the cellar last year, eh?" - Guru

Remember, you also got the advantage of picking first in every round this year, with NO SNAKE back and forth. The view is a lot different picking 10th each round, let me tell you. If fate falls my way, I will do so again for the second time in 3 years!

(Figured it was time for a little smack)

Agreed, but consider this: Excluding our keepers, I got the first pick this year, and you got the last pick. Other than those two extremes, you got to pick one slot ahead of me every time. That should have given you a slight advantage in all picks other than that I got Maddux and you got some scrub. Admittedly, Maddux vs. a scrub is a big difference. But hardly enough to make a move from last to first.

In addition, I had Russ Ortiz as one of my keepers from last year. That shows how bad last year was!

I had a great hitter draft this year. Konerko, Soriano, Sweeney, Lowell, Abreu, C. Beltran... - and all of these were guys that you could have scooped up just ahead of me. My pitching started weak, but I've been able to salvage that somewhat.

Smack back at ya...

Hahahahahaha.

Well, for the record, I didn't draft last this year. This is year 3 of the league, I won the first year, Wil (coldwater coyotes) won last year.

You got some oustanding values in Sweeney and Konerko -- especially Konerko. Looking at the draft, I scooped up such 'studs' as Nomo and Weaver before you got Konerko (ugh!). You took Soriano in Rd. 3 -- which seemed agressive at the time but was quite a catch obviously at this point.

I took Delgado four picks before you took Sweeney (ugh) but at least got Colon in round 5 after the likes of Sele and Burkett were taken.

It's funny how you can look back upon a draft and question so many picks. Hindsight and all.

Should be a fun ride down the stretch. I had as many as 90 roto-points not much longer than 2 or 3 weeks ago, so perhaps after this slump I can recoup some of those lost points. Give me 4 HR's and 4 RBI's and I get 5 points in a snap. 1 more SB gets me another point. Colon and El Duque tonight should lower my ERA suffiently to pass you again, so there's a 2-point swing since you will lose a point. True I'm vulnerable in a spot or two (saves in particular....groan), but I think I have some points on the board for the taking.

Good luck down the stretch.

Actually, I didn't think I'd be able to catch you, so I'm happy just to be here at this juncture - especially with Sweeney down for so long and Lowell crapping out in the 2nd half.

Sure beats being in the basement!

"And DOWN the stretch they come!!"

Incredible. Colon throws a shutout with a low WHIP, and all of a sudden 3 pitching points are my way. Guru and I keep flip-flopping in ERA and are also very close in a few other categories. If a strike wipes out the season, this thing could come down to August 29th.
