I know that this is a bad place to put this topic but lately my computer freezes everytime I either:
1. Try to send an address.
2. When I click the pull down arrow in my address bar thingie.

Extremely frustrating. The only way I can browse is by using my favorites. Help anyone?

not exactly an educated answer, but, try downloading a more updated version of your browser? If you can figure out how to get there ;)

Are you using IE or Nutscrape?

When in doubt, just chuck the thing out the window.

I updated my IE. Thats when the problems started.
Thanx for the quick response. Maybe I should upgrade again?

Have you done a thorough virus check lately? There are a few good free virus-checking programs out there. I'd make sure you have an updated virus-checking program, re-start your machine and do a thorough check of your system before you start anything else up.

Then, if you are using Windows, do a scandisk and defrag just to make sure you've got a clean and organized disk.

Try going to Control panel--Add/remove programs and choose to remove Internet Explorer and then choose repair. See if that helps.

Reinstall windows. As long as you have the software disc, you should be able to do it quickly and painlessly. Just make sure you don't format your C: Drive :)

Just my luck. I dont have the restore disc. It was lost during my recent move of location. Oh well. That IE repair did no good. What happens if you check restore IE to previous configuration?Who needs to browse. All I need is ESPN, Rotoguru, and Smallworld:(

I never use IE unless I have to at work. I always use netscape. Since your problem is more than in IE only it could be something serious. You may want to chekc your CPU allocation, unfortunately I'm leaving in like 10 minutes so i cant coach you through it untill i get home. If you have 2000 or XP you can usually just hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and it will give you a window with all the programs running and fomr there you can see what your processor is running. I know with 95,98 and ME you can do the same, but it just shows your programs running. I think under Accessories and System tools you can find your CPU monitor if not there then check Ctrl Panel... LEt me know what that does.

Just find a friend and burn a copy of Windows ME.
And perhaps you should consider backuping things and reformat your whole hard drive and start over. You'll be surprised how much faster your computer can get.

Could I just use my friends Windows 98 startup disc? I have a Dell and he has a Compaq?

Looks like I had a corrupt download while upgrading IE 6. I went back to my previous version and everything's fine now. Thanx for the help fellows and gals.

Upgrading Windows is dangerous. I only recommend doing that if you absolutely need to and before you do it make sure all your important files are backed up.

Yeah, bmd, that's great advice. Backup everything important onto other media first. And don't get the first couple of versions of the new Windows. Give them time to fix their mistakes first.

But I certainly would not take TLW's advice and get a bootleg copy of Windows. You never know what might be missing of corrupt in the burn and you get no support.

Windows ME was horrible for me. Upgraded to Win XP Pro but not on C:/ did it into another file. Worked very well and doesn't even crash anymore.

That's why you backup everything before you do that, PD. And that's why you only do that when you format your whole hard drive to get rid of old useless things that clog up your system. If something goes wrong, just start over with another copy. I haven't had the problems yet.

But of course, if you have a retail version, use it. I used to think that the OS is so important that I probably shouldn't use pirated stuff, that's why I got the retail Win 95. However, everything has gone perfectly for the past few years from Win 98, to Win ME and to Win XP.

Of course, with the new system for XP, I can't get the patches anymore, but I can hardly notice any of those bugs. I did get the patches for ME though. Well, technically a friend did it for me. It was good while it lasted. Ah well.

Anyhow, I'm just saying that reformatting your hard drive once a year is a good idea. Pirate or not is irrelevant to that idea.

I agree with TLW as far as bootleg XP goes. I was all set to buy a retail XP copy to have at home for my 3 computers in my house. At the store I found out that I could only use a copy of XP on one computer. In other words, I was going to have to buy 3 copies for my house... I looked for an 'alternative solution', and now Microshaft got 0 purchases from me instead of 1. Great marketing Bill.

I also format my computer about once every 6 months. Simple use of a computer over time will drain resources, and cause your computer to be less and less efficient every day. If you aren't very computer savvy, I'd suggest finding someone to show you how to format. Its not all that hard to do once you get the hang of it, and its a very good thing to do to improve performance. (Takes me about 1/2 hour to format, another 1/2 hour to re-install my programs. One hour after I start, I have a fresh install and a much faster computer.)

Also, alot of the times when I run into a problem, (or a virus) a quick format solves it for me. IMHO, better to spend 1 hour formatting than 4 or 5 hours running around trying to find a solution.

just 1 word, which is the solution to all great pc problems: R-E-B-O-O-T.
And the next time try to create a c: and d: from your HD, saving on D: all your useful data, and on C: just the applications and programs. It has been the solution to the hundred of problems i had in the past.....:-)

Naw, rebooting don't solve recurring problems. And freezing at the drag-down box certainly qualifies as a recurring problem.

And an alternate version I heard about partitioning is to put ONLY the OS in the C:\ and leave about 0.5-1.0GB of disk space. Put all other applications, programs, data, whatever into D:\. I won't call that a solution to any problems, but it does seem to increase the speed a little bit.

TLW, the best reason for partitioning that way (I have mine set up that way) is that it makes formatting even easier. All my data stays on D:, I just have to format C: and re-install my OS. I usually make my C: drive 2.5 gigs, so that Windows can have room for a nice swap file if it needs it. (I have 80 gigs anyway, so I play it safe...)

Since someone already started this thread...i got a question about my CD-RW drive. When ever I try to use it through a USB hub it errors about .25 of the way through and then the disk it ruined. It's works fine if connected directly to the orginal hub and the hub and software arn't the problem? Any ideas? What it seems is happening is the drive is losing resourses through the hub. Are there some internal settings I can mess with?
