0 Subject: Web site creation software

After several years of sitting on my butt, I've finally decided to actually do something about putting up a web site. I've had my domain name reserved for some time now, and have tentatively sketched out some ideas on what the site should look like (mostly text-based information on my company, with links to information sites I use).

So now I have to find some software to develop the page with. Anyone have any preferences or suggestions? I do not know HTML so it will have to be basic. I use Windows ME at the office and a Mac at home, so the software can be for either platform.

Thanks for your input.

PD -- HTML is not very hard. I started out by running through the tutorial at Webmonkey (Intro to HTML and HTML teaching tool), and went from there. That and Notepad can design you a simple site, and it honestly would only take you a little more time to learn HTML basics than it would take to learn to use an out-of-the-box design program.

If you do decide to look into hand-coding, any text editor will work, but I highly recommend EditPlus. I am in love with this program.

How do you reserve a domain name? Do you have to pay for the reservation?

The easiest way to reserve a name is to go to www.Register.com. Type in the name you want to reserve to see if it is available. If so, you can reserve and pay for it on-line with a credit card.

Pretty simple, actually.

Go Daddy is also a really good place to reserve a domain name. At $8.95, it's cheaper than most other places, too. They also can host your site if you need. Good prices there too. (Learned about the site on The Screen Savers. If you don't get TechTV, you're missing out!)

PD, Dreamweaver would probably be the easiest, most universal software for you to use. It's developed by macromedia, and i believe they offer a free trial downloadable from their website -- www.macromedia.com

HTML certainly isn't difficult to pick up, but the quickest, dirtiest, easiest approach is definitely to use a WYSIWYG editor, and dreamweaver is the best of the bunch. It helps to have some previous knowledge of design tools in general (photoshop, illustrator et al.) but it's not at all required.

BTW, my personal favorite registrar is dotster.com I've registered all my domains, and all of my clients' domains through it. $14.95/yr and easy self-maintenance pages. I'll have to check Go Daddy, though..

I've always wondered how "reserving a domain" works for these companies. What prevents one company from allowing a domain name used by one that's registered under another company?

the individual registrars all answer to internic. there may be issues when multiple ICANN-certified registrars issue the same name concurrently, but i've never troubled myself with the intricacies of the process. essentially, every registrar checks the other registrars', or a big central, database before issuing domains and then reports the transaction.

DREAMWEAVER! Without a doubt, and hands down, it's the best software out there. You can try anything else, but you will be very unhappy with anything else once you try Dreamweaver. I've used it for over 4 years now and swear by it. The fact that it's become a web design industry standard is just further proof of it's capabilities. Also, Dreamweaver recently tied in Homesite (after Macromedia bought the company) which is also a highly regarded HTML/web site development software. Download the 30-day trial (full working version of the software with no catches for 30 days) and you'll likely be buying the software before your trial is over.

As far as domain name registration, I've had no problems with PowerPipe for $7.99/year. Easy to use management interface and they're the only company that has sent me an email reminding me that one of my domain names was about to expire... 3 months before it expired! Hard to beat the price and their tech support was very quick and helpful when I needed to set up my nameservers for a domain I had registered with them.

Sometimes simple is best! Maybe a phone #, and a link to rotoguru.com, but other than that leave it just the way it is.

Boy, just trying running http://www.permissionscompany.com through InterTran. These results are ca-razy! I'm partial to the English-to-Italian translation myself, but the English-to-Croation comes in a close second.

But seriously PD, is your site going to be strictly business? Or do we get to look forward to some sort of perm-blog?
