Does anyone know where I can get ahold of play-by-play for World Series games dating back to 1903? I'm not especially planning to filch it for ESPN; this is an independent stat analysis project. I'm interested in the batter logs ("Franco grounded out to short. Canseco flied out to center." etc).

I tried the usual suspects. baseball-almanac.com has boxscores and linescores but not logs. No one else was even close.

Email Neyer. He was talking about someone, I can remember who, who is going through and creating usable data files of all the play-by-plays.

If you had a decent search engine, I could point you to the article. ;)

Alright, since two people have expressed modest interest in my plight...

How do batters hit when they are in a position to be the final batter of the season?

1918 was easy. With a 2-1 lead going into the top of the 9th, the Cubs were retired in order. So the 3rd batter of the inning, Mann, was the only one who could have ended the season. And he did.

1927 was a little more complicated. The Yankees entered the bottom of the 9th of game 4 tied. Basically, every batter who came to bat in the inning is counted because a home run would win the Series. The Yanks loaded the bases, and with two outs, a wild pitch ended the season. In all, 5 guys batted, plus Lazzeri, who was at bat when the run scored.

Here is my research so far:
1918
Game 7 Top 9: Mann (Chi) 43
1927
Game 4 Bot 9: Combs (NYY) BB
Game 4 Bot 9: Koenig (NYY) 1B

2002
Game 7 Top 9: Bell (SFO) BB
Game 7 Top 9: Shinjo (SFO) K
Game 7 Top 9: Lofton (SFO) F8

More later...

Sweet!

Can you give me some sources?

I have Chris Gomez in 1998, also 5-3. Alfonzo also had a chance in 2000. Same with Miller in 2001. I agree on Lockhart, and your 1995 and 1996 sound right.

1997 is tough. I believe every batter after Bonilla in the 9th and all Marlin batters in the 10th and 11th. But I can't get PBP anywhere.

I also tried 1919, but it was tough to discern because it went 8 games. What were the rules?

Good work, Donkey Hunter. Keep it up...

1997 is tough but here is what I can piece together.
Game 7
B9: Johnson 1B
B9: Counsell Sac Fly
B9: Eisenrich OUT

B10: White OUT
B10: Renteria 1B
B10: Sheffield 1B
B10: Cangelosi K
B10: Alou - Flied out

B11: Bonilla - 1B
B11: Zaun - popped out a bunt
B11: Counsell - E4
B11: Eisenreich - BB (int)
B11: White - FC 4-2
B11: Renteria 1B

For Alfonzo:
Mariano Rivera struck out pinch-hitter Darryl Hamilton. Benny Agbayani walked, but Edgardo Alfonzo, who was 3-for-21 in the series, flied weakly to right field. That brought Mike Piazza to the plate and the Mets' slugger launched a line drive to deep center field that was run down by Bernie Williams.

So basically, if he'd hit into a DP, it's over.

1998 I believe Mark Sweeney pinch hit for Gomez with two out in the ninth.

1998 Game 4 Article

With special attention to the line.

"Fittingly, Brosius handled the last ball of the year, a grounder by pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney."

Sweeney it is. So we're set for 18, 27, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02. We can go back to 95 with your sources. Just post a sentence from the story if there's nothing else. I'm off to bed. I'll check back in the morning.

1995

But Wohlers had plenty, stepping in as the din of 51,875 screaming, standing, stomping fans filled Fulton County Stadium.
Cameras sent pin pricks of light flashing through the night as Rafael Belliard made a superb running catch in foul ground. Pinch-hitter Paul Sorrento then launched a fly ball to centre.
And suddenly it was over as centre-fielder Marquis Grissom chased down Carlos Baerga's line drive and the stadium erupted with the sounds of rockets, fireworks and the Tomahawk chant.

Need to add a bunch to 1996 with the double play thing I keep missing.

Heres the linescore.

John Wetteland pitching. A. Jones struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch high and inside. Klesko singled up the middle off the glove of shortstop Jeter, who dove and knocked the ball down. Pendleton singled to right on 1-2 pitch, Klesko advanced to third. Luis Polonia, pinch-hitting for Blauser, struck out swinging on 1-2 pitch. Belliard ran for Pendleton. Grissom singled to right on first pitch, Klesko scored, Belliard advanced to second. Lemke fouled out to third baseman Hayes.

So

Pendleton 1B
Polonia K
Grissom 1B

1993

On this night Toronto leadoff hitter Rickey Henderson walked on four pitches. White flied out to leftfield, but Molitor singled. And then Carter came to the plate and was served that fastball down and in. "Ninety-nine times out of 100," Carter said later, "I hook that pitch way foul. I don't know why, but thank god this one stayed fair."

1993 is another tough one so I think I am off to bed too. But my best source has been CNNSi's World Series flashbacks.

They are useful if a team went 1-2-3 in the ninth but are tough if anything eventful happened.

Lemme give this a shot. Got this from
1992 WS Recap

1992 - Braves vs Toronto

Lonnie Smith comes up in game 6 in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out and a Blauser on 2nd, Braves down 2-1 in the game and 3-2 in the series. He walks. 1st and 2nd 1 out
Lonnie Smith - BB

Francisco Cabrera up next lines out to left fielder Candy Maldonado. 1st and 2nd 2 outs.
Francisco Cabrera - 7

Otis Nixon singles in the tying run. Runners advance to 2nd and 3rd on the throw.
Otis Nixon 1b RBI

Gant then flies out to Devon White to end the bottom of the 9th.
Ron Gant 8

Didn't see any PBP from the bottom of the 10th, the BJ's then score 2 in the 11th and are up 4-2 in the bottom of 11th.
Belliard comes up with 2 on and 0 out in the bottom of 11th. He sacrifices the runners.
Ron Belliard S

Brian Hunter grounds out but one run comes home(doesn't say who he grounds out to).
Brian Hunter RBI ground out

Otis Nixon tries the infamous bunt single with 2 outs but Timlin gets to it. End of WS.
Otis Nixon 1

Working back from the lineup card it could be assumed that the Braves went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th but they might've had a runner erased.

1991 Braves vs Twins
I'm tired so I'll just post what I can deduce as a chance to end the year. Twins won game 6th on a homerun by Puckett but I can't find the PBP for that game. Here's what I found

Kirby Pucket HR(Game6)
Chili Davis 1b
Harper 1b
Shane Mack Gidp
Mike Pagliarulo IBB
Paul Sorrento K

Dan Gladden 2b
Chuck Knoblauch S
Puckett IBB
Hrbeck IBB
Gene Larkin 1b RBI

There's also a little PBP of the 1990 series on my link but I don't feel like wading through it.

From what I found, when facing a chance to end the season the batters were(this is assuming the braves went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th in 1992) 6-14 4 RBI
4 BB 2 S
