The Seattle Mariners obtained All-Star outfielder Randy Winn from Tampa Bay on Monday as compensation for letting manager Lou Piniella go to the Devil Rays.

Seattle also agreed to send minor-league infielder Antonio Perez to the Devil Rays. The teams agreed to the deal Friday, contingent on Tampa Bay's reaching an agreement with Piniella to become the Devil Rays' manager.

Randy Winn - sweet!

Antonio perez was certainly expendable. Injured and Lazy. Also, they have a younger, more talented shortstop behind him.

I agree Bili, we've got a pretty solid outfield now....

So now it becomes a question of who leads the ship? I thought I saw mentioning of Willie Randolph.

Willie would be sweet!

Pryce should continue to do what he does best.

Personally, I think the Ms should get some <$1M young dude with a some minor league experience and give him a shot. Spend the money on an impact bat or resigning Moyer.

Actually, I'm not a big fan of Winn. He may be a step up from Sierra, but he's still weak. Sure, he did well, but he's not that great. Personally, I'd have liked to see Juan Thomas get a shot before turning 32.

Why the excitement over Willie Randolph? A hero of my childhood, I'd love nothing more than to see him succeed wherever he goes, but he'll be a rookie manager. I guess he's had a great view for the last 6 years and about as much ML coaching experience as you could ask without being a manager, but I can't see getting excited over a loaded veteran team in the toughest division in baseball being taken over by a rookie manager a year after they failed to make the playoffs. I think the pressure is a bit much to pin on someone with no experience and that young managers in general have a much greater chance for success when inserted into the leaner phase of rebuilding situation. He might even be able to successfully take over the Yankees right now, considering his familiarity with the team and the lack of divisional competition, but sending him to the AL West would be thowing him to the dogs.

I think you are over estimating the power of the manager, MITH.

There are plenty of good, stable, experienced players on the Mariners to keep the ship running straight. Nothing like winning to keep everyone happy, and the Mariners have a very good chance of continuing to win - particularly if they get a rookie manager and are able to spend an extra few million on another power bat.

I don't know, I've seen some bad managers. Maybe it's just NY where a manager needs to really fit in and assess what this particular group of individuals needs to do to succeed and then procede to set the right clubhouse tone and impliment the right practice regimes and pick the right staff to compliment him and say all the right things to the media and balance a superfine line of authority and flexibility with his players and also know all the right baseball moves to make. I've seen the animalistic Billy Martin take teams to the World Series that guys like Bob Lemon couldn't get out of the gate. I saw Lou lose his temper every night (as his mentor taught him) and I saw him finally win when he changed his approach and calmed down. Jeff Torborg could not get a loaded but ego-heavy Mets team off the ground. Dallas Greene was awful in NY and nearly ruined Al Leiter's young career in the late 80s before proving unable to right the ship across town that Torborg had already sunk. Why does the baseball world regard Buck Showalter as the best startup guy in the business but lacking at whatever it takes to bring a championship? Maybe it doesn't matter who manages the Mariners, but I think they need to be careful.

I think you are attributing way to much to managing, and not enough to the quality of the players on the field. Youngbuck could manage the Yankees and win every year.

If youngbuck could win with the Yankees every year and the manager position is unimportant (I and I'd believe much of the baseball world strongly disagrees with you), than why get excited about the prospect of anyone getting the job? You just happen to be a Willie Randolph fan?

Yeah. Willie is cool and would be fun to have in the dugout. You got it. Entertainment value - just like lou.

Can't disagree with you there. I hope Willie gets a job, he's waited too long. And wherever he lands, I hope he's successful.

I heard on the radio this morning that Tony Muser's name has been thrown into the Mariners mix. It struck fear into my heart.

That's a joke, right Mr. Prez?

I don't put too much credence into how much a manager can help a club, but I know a manager who is a cancer when I see one!

Not joking at all. It was the local update that they run regularly during commercial breaks in the Tony Kornheiser show. Heard it a couple times during my commute this morning.

here we go, confirmation.

There also is plenty of activity around the Mariners' offices this week as former Kansas City manager Tony Muser has been added to the interview list. He will be interviewed Thursday.

The best thing I can glean from that article is this:

This has been an unusual and fortuitous year for (Randy) Winn. A precursor came in January when he was picked at random at a Los Angeles Lakers game for a half-court shooting contest. He nailed the shot and won a car for his mother.

Right... Pick a millionaire and have him win a car for his mom... He could buy a couple dozen cars just from his paycheck. I'm sure there are way more people out there who deserve the shot more than Randy Winn.

Winn's 2002 Salary: $960,000. close ;-) he's still a better (random) choice than a lot of the types of people that I'm sure would be at a LA Laker's home game.

Sweet!!
Seattle's outfield has tons of speed now, might lead the league in stolen bases next year. Still, Seattle needs to get that one all star slugger to give them a real shot in the playoffs. Edgar and Boone, arent the answer there.

They also need an established ace pitcher. Not Garcia. He stunk last season. I traded for him in a pool while his value was supposed to be at the lowest midway through the season, but it just stayed at that low point instead of moving up.

Huge sigh of relief. Tony Muser did not make the finals in the Mariners' manager search. List is narrowed to Jim Riggleman, Buddy Bell, Bob Melvin and Sam Perlozzo
