Gang:

We're up early with the 2003 edition of Ultimate Baseball.

Check out http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/fullseason/ultimate/login.html.

We're proud to be the first major sports site with a baseball game up and have made, by request, the following improvements:

1) We've put in the DH. This allows for more flexibility with your roster.

2) We've made certain players eligible at multiple positions.

3) We've increased the size of our prize pool dramatically.

4) We've inroduced staggered pricing -- so players will be closer to their "true value" at the start of the season.

There are many, many things that we do wrong with this business. But one of them isn't effort in improving the product. These four changes are for you, and were suggestions FROM you. We love Ultimate Baseball, and we hope you'll join us again this year.

Nice to see the prizes increase.

Can you explain the staggered pricing?

Not sure about the five-pack. I think we wanted to stick with a more basic pricing structure for baseball. But I'll ask around.

Just so people don't need to flip back and forth: we haven't priced all players yet. We're waiting to see, for example, if certain pitchers make a rotation, or if a borderline guy wins a starting job. That will allow us to launch the game now while still pricing fairly at the start of the season.

Erik In past years you have teamed up with Yahoo! and sold a draft package (.pdf format) and Yahoo! stats tracker, etc.. IIRC, it included some discounts for purchasing all at once. Any idea if that is on the horizon again?

We still have a content relationship with Yahoo, but our games deal expired. Stat-tracker will still be sold by them, and I think they're bundling it with our draft kit for their Roto game.

perhaps it's just me, and not a complaint, but rather an helpful tip to those downloading the spreadsheet -

it looks like there are a few "math" errors. the "Total Roster Value" and "Players Left to Buy" are looking for the value of column D, when they should be looking for column H.

or, maybe i'm crazy,
peace,

Erik/Bernie - the page which lists the prizes pops up in a window that is too tall to fit on many computer screens. When I set my resolution at 800x600, I can't reposition it in a way that allows me to see the footnote (about multiple prizes, ineligible states, etc.).

You ought to at least resize that browser window so that it is less than 600 pixels tall (it is currently set for 650), so that those with 800x600 resolution have a chance to read it.

another thing i noticed, and this may be because i'm so used to seeing things a certain way - or perhaps i downloaded it wrong, or don't even know how to set it up properly, or maybe even it's the settings here at work:

the menu bar i'm used to seeing - File, Edit, Insert, Format, Tools, Data, etc etc, doesn't appear on my downloadable spreadsheet.

i'm sure someone can explain it to me better, but i like to SORT (under data), by position or HRs, or what have you, and dont seem to be able to. can anyone help, or is this another glitch (ahhh, the advantages of doing everything early! hehe)

thanks,
Tree

re: not pricing all players
I'm sorry but Erik is mistaken about this, because I misled him. We have indeed set salaries for all players already. We'll also be introducing new players into the game before the season starts as they come up.

Tree, I don't think a spreadsheet can alter the layout of your menus. I could be wrong. Sometimes Windows applications let you move their elements by accident a little too easily.

Will you be changing prices before the season starts, or will they be at what we see them now?

(And if you are changing them, whats the deadline for changing them? We have to be able to plan our teams, idealy at least a week before the season starts.)

Thanks guys.

Tree, you are probably opening up the SS as a webpage (Excel in IE). Just download it and open it as you regularly do in excel.

Question for someone at TSN. I purchased the 3 team package yesterday. I just found out now about the 5 team pacakge which was added today. Is there anyway I could pay the difference for the two extra teams?
Thanks,

Finally sat down and started looking at things...

While admittedly, I don't play the game for the money (obviously from my WWR, D'oh!) The new prize structure is very nice. Payouts through the top 200. Nice. Back to the $50 for division (rather than 40 and a T-Shirt [although I still want one of those Ts for the little Fluid-Monsters.])

I like the multi-position capability and the DH slot. I haven't scanned the the spreadsheet to see who has it, but roster flexibility definely makes for interesting strategy.

One quick note on eligibility for the lazy to read people:

Residents of Montana, Vermont, Louisiana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Colorado and the province of Quebec may play, but WILL NOT be eligible to win or receive any prizes.

Erik B., one slight goof in your Official Rules and Regulations:

The fifty (50) entrants with the 101st-200th highest point totals at the conclusion of the Game will receive a $U.S. 25.00 check in his/her name.

I know its higher math, but 101 through 200 is more than 50 entrants. We'll just blame Larry.

One last thing:

Re: When does a player qualify at a new position?

We will be periodically making certain players eligible at additional positions throughout the year. A player will be eligible for consideration only if he has appeared in at least 10 games at a new position.

Could we get this nailed down to a more targeted time frame or patern. I would suggest a re-evaluation of positon players each Monday (that is the light game/travel day correct? Sheesh, skip a year of fantasy game and the mind goes to mush) that way, players can stategize their roster by the time the Position-Player trades are refreshed on Thursday.

Just a quick question (which is actually more relevant to a hoops division). Are residents of Taiwan eligible for prizes or would the division prize roll down to the 2nd place finisher?

Just an example of a search feature I would like to see that shouldn't be too difficult. (I was hoping this would be in basketball too)

when you sell - this is a nice feature...

You are about to release Chris Webber for 10,780,000 TSND:

Your remaining funds would be 11,970,000 TSND.

BUT I would like for the ability to conduct a player sort/search made with remaining funds not just "players at any price" or "under 7,8,9 million etc." Right below "players at any price" could be "available funds" or cash or whatever...

does this make any sense?

I know I can search that way in the sortible stats, but this would be a nice addition and would help with buying and selling.
It dawned on me when I sold a guy and I had to search under 3 million - despite the fact that my total funds were only 2.1 or something like that. 20/25 guys weren't available for me to purchase.

I am just thinking outloud, just something for you to consider trying out.

Hey Bernie, If someone that wins the division your in, and they are from one of the ineligible places, does that $50 prize roll down to the 2nd place finisher, or does no one get it?

Try dumping that item from your cart, then log out and log back in. I think it may be a caching issue (I love that excuse -- it sounds so 1998 -- but in this case, I think it's right).

Eric or Bernie - I don't think anyone ever answered #26, 31, or 32 (at least in this thread).

I have a request and am not sure where to put it. so I stuck it here.

I use Guru's sortables for research and when it comes time to input my team(s), I find it easier to go directly to each player's team page and buy them from there rather than do the search/sort for the individual player. IMO,it's a heck of a lot faster loading the static team pages instead of doing all the separate sorts.

My problem is in Ultimate Baseball (and Basic), the pulldown menu on the team page used to switch between teams is missing on the new team page. I need that pulldown menu. Will it be back before the season starts? Thanks,

ds

I understand the 5 day pricing cycle. I understand why it was implemented. I understand the need for something different for pitchers, but I don't care for it. I was hoping a modification would come in this year. Esp. for those pitchers that lose a ton on the day they pitch. Then you hold for a day or two to get your money back before selling. I always say, learn the rules and strategize accordingly...just tough when you play to win and that ultimately involves points.

Nah, it wont take up much more time than one team, since i plan on making them identical. I figure since i spend about 30 minutes a day on this stuff, i might as well get paid for it. Of course, i could have a horrible season and lose the $110 bucks i paid for all the teams. Since i live in Hawaii, this is the closing thing i can find to legal gambling.

Erik B. I sent an email to sportingnews to asking if they can make an exception in this case:

I have a group of friends that live in Venezuela, right now in this country there are foreign money restrictions and they cannot use their credit cards to pay Ultimate Fantasy Baseball, so I bought a 3 team package and a friend of mine bought a 5 team package to share it with them, we both don't live in Venezuela, we just want to help our friends.

The problem is that we must share the same login and we all can see each others teams and cheating could be a great problem in this case.

As I told you before I sent an email asking if I can give credits to my friends so they can use it with thier own loggins and they told that they cannot do that, they told me that I have 2 options:

1. Play all with the same login.
2. Or buy each team individualy with my friends login.

This 2 options are unfair, in the first one cheating could be a great problem and the second one its unfair too, because with the point that we live outside USA or Canada we cannot win or receive any prizes so paying regular prizes teams seems to be very unfair in this particular situation.

Its impossible that Sportingnews can make an exception in this particular case and let me share my credits with my friends?

I don't know if this problem corresponds to you but I hope you can help in anything.

Thanks in advance.
