Hey guys
Ok I am going to have a crack at some Rotisserie-style games this season, but have no idea what the best way to play that style is. I was wondering if anyone knows of any websites that give technique tips for this? or advice on how to compete well at this style?
I am mainly wondering if it is 5 * 5 scoring, is it best to have players who will do atleast average to good in all or most of the categories, or best to have a few players that are great in certain categories each, but not good in the others. ?
for example taking a guy who is brilliant with walking but useless at homeruns, just to get his walks total, or better to take a guy that hits some home runs and also gets some walks.
thanks guys.

See, it's all about balance. If you want to win, you need to have at least 6 points in every category.
Don't go to the extreme on either one of the ways you mentioned. For some categories, use players that contributes second grade to them. But for others, use players that are very good at one, but worthless at another. It all depends who's left in the draft. You must improvise.
The draft is important, but the first week of the season is also extremely important. Whatever emerging players you pick up in the first week for free usually affect your team as much as your draft does.
If you have an abundance of premier pitchers, feel free to use up the game quota early. Try to trade them to fill any weaknesses in your lineup. It's true that the pitchers' value decrease because you've run out of games, but you can get extra points from the hitters, at the expense of helping one of the other teams.
Most of the time, you cannot use up the 162 games you're allotted for each position. Therefore position eligibility is also important. This makes guys like Pujols and Kent very attractive.

And plan to stay up late on trade-deadline-eve making mad deals with Left Wings, rockafellerskank, and other mutual tradeaholics. ;)

thanks guys, this game i want to enter has no draft as such though, it is like TSN where you just chose the team you want with a salary cap, but the scoring is rotiserrie. It is CDM or something like that.
Maybe is it better to have someone like Ichiro than Sosa or Bonds? as saves maybe are a more precious commodity?
Maybe is someone with a great WHIP better than taking a Hudson, Zito , Maddux for their wins and k's ???
thanks

Wow, what league are you playing in? If you are getting Ichiro for saves then I would love to join.

I look for players who are solid 100-30-100-.300 guys and are consistent year in year out. Instead of getting Bonds and some dregs, get 4 of these second tier guys and you'll be better off. With pitching I look at ERA, K's, and consistency, again.

Gee, if it's a salary cap game where a player can show up on multiple rosters, of course you'd want to buy the expensive guys who are good at several categories, and then use the cheap guys who are good at one category to suppliment them.
Remember, if you want to win, you cannot afford to disregard any categories.

TLW #2. Are you implying that Kent is attractive because he plays multiple positions? I disagree. Playing Kent at first base is NOT a good idea and does NOT add to his value.

If a person can only afford a couple of top studs, in 5*5 scoring, is he better to grab Martinez and Johnson, or a Bonds and Rodriguez ? basically in the scoring are the hitting points or pitching points the most important to grab with real studs? I am thinking Pitching, but just not too sure here.

I don't think Kent is a bad first baseman. Now that he's gonna get third base eligibility, it just makes him more versatile.

Extra eligibility is never a bad thing. Take one of my 2001 teams for example. I had Frank Thomas, coming off a 43 HR/143 RBI/.323 AVG season, manning 1B for me. At 2B I had Kent, and on my bench I drafted that 'overhyped' 2B prospect Alfonzo Soriano in the last couple rounds.
Twenty games later, after giving me 4 HR and a .221 AVG, Thomas is gone for the season, Soriano is on his way to a great rookie campaign, and if Kent hadn't been 1B eligible I'd have two good 2B and no 1B. I eventually traded Kent for a better power 1B, but if I hadn't been able to say "I'm fine with Kent at 1B, really" I wouldn't have gotten as much for him.
I agree, that using Kent at 1B is a waste of his value, but having the option is nice. Its good to have a backup for everyone, and I'm not talking about some bum on the bench. If you lose a stud to injury, being able to replace him with another stud is great. In my keeper league, I have Hinske at 3B, Bagwell at 1B, Pujols in the OF (can also play 1B and 3B) and Dunn (1B) in the OF. Thats alot of options should someone get injured. Finding a replacement OF is much easier than replacing a 1B or 3B...
