0 Subject: Expos Field in Puerto Rico

Who knows the ins and outs of this field? Can we expect to see Home Runs galore? I may be wrong but I thought I remembered reading this field was small.

Guru- is there anyway to code the schedule generator to indicate which games are in Puerto Rico? If the field is a hitter's park it may be important to see when they are playing there when scouting long term schedules.

I believe they start there this weekend with the Mets.

Here is the Puerto Rico Expos Schedule. This weekend is indeed the first set of games.

And here is an In-depth Look at Hiram Bithorn Stadium which says, "The Stadium appears to be neutral, with a slight bias towards pitching." The field is artificial turf and the depths look like 315, 360, 400, 360, 315, which is actually just a shade (10 feet) smaller than the Montreal Expos' stadium and sounds pretty close (again, 10 feet or so) to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' stadium.

All in all, I'm not sure I would pick up any players specifically for the first series with so little information (is there any history there?) known about how MLB players will do there.

315 is pretty short, especially for both corners. Not familiar enough with where and how Vlad, Vidro and Wilkerson hit them to comment further on how it might affect HRs. It's a turf field so at the very least, it shouldn't hamper general offensive production.

For comparison, 315' is the distance to the LF wall at Minute Maid Park (HOU). The question now is how tall are the fences at Hiram Bithorn Stadium? Given the talk about sponsor signs galore in the OF, I would guess that the walls are TOO high. It makes me wonder what's there that makes the writer think there is a slight bias toward pitching.

Every article I've read expect the field to be a hitters park. Not Coors-like, but possibly Minute Maid-like. 315' is short, even if the walls are a bit higher then elsewhere.

In any case, I don't usually go out of my way to buy Berkman when he's on a 8-9 game homestand, so I won't with Vlad either. On the other hand if I'm looking for an OF around that time, Vlad will get serious consideration.

I live on an island right next door to Puerto Rico, and hope to get tickets for some of these games.

Have been to Hiram Bithorn before, and am shocked that anyone would consider it a pitcher's park. Definitely a hitter's park, imho. But not Coors-like. Not Minute Maid-like either imho, since CF is not as spacious.

Not sure if I would pick players up just for those series though, since it doesn't look like the home stands are necessarily long enough. Good pitchers can win in that park.

Another thing-the humidity there in June will be intense. Not sure what the effect of that would be on stats.

Just my humble opinion!

I also read an article saying it was slightly pitching bias, but I think the main reason for that is the huge foul area. I guess that means a lot more pop foul outs.
