Recently my PS2 fails to recognize PS1 disks. DVD movies and PS2 games are functioning fine, but no PS1 games are working. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any suggestions?

Try playing a CD on there and report back.

Researched this at Christmas time, when a buddy gave me his PS2 box because of a similar issue. He just went out and bought a new XBox to replace it, so he was just going to junk the PS2.

It is a pretty common issue with the boxes, one that Sony knows exists. They (Sony) were repairing this at one time, supposedly even if it was out of its warranty. Mine is still sitting around, as I just haven't gotten around to investigating further (read, I'm lazy and don't really care about it).

1-800-345-SONY is the repair number. Sony PS2 Support Site

This an early model? Thats what happened to me. Laser went bad. There's a few websites out there that tell you how to fix it, but I found it its mostly just a quick fix. I got mine to work for about 10 minutes before it stunk again. I ended up selling mine on ebay. There was a lot of bad ps2's on there (all with descriptions on what was wrong with them, as was mine), and salvaged about 100 dollars, sold a few old games, and just bought a new one.

Good luck to you, its a sticky situation.

Ack! Sorry I misread.

PS2 games are working fine, huh? Well, perhaps you could have the same problem as I did just reversed. My problem and most peoples was the DVD going bad first, no the CD, but they each have their own bolt with the laser, perhaps that loosened.

If you have a PS2 game that is a CD rom game rather than DVD rom (it should say on the disc) try that.

I had a similar problem where it couldn't read black(PS1) or blue(PS2 CD) discs. DVDs and silver botoomed PS2 games worked fine. I took mine apart and and cleaned the laser with a cotton swab and some alcohol. It worked fine for about 3-4 months, then it died.

culdeus,

Audio CD has the same message as PS1 games:
Unable to Read Disc (or something similar to that)

RockChalker,

Do you remember any of the websites? I'd like to check them out.

Yeah, what they said. The fact that you can't see audio CD's seals it. You lost your CD laser.

Since it is just your CD laser you run a risk of losing your primary functionality by messing with it.

For a 2 bit fix try getting one of those air cans and spraying it in the machine to clean it off. (NOT upsidedown). As effective as ripping the thing apart to wipe down the laser window.

There's a well known problem with the PS2 failing to read CD based games now and then. It generally doesn't effect DVD based games.

My current PS2 is my 3rd since launch...I bought it the day it came out with EB's walk in/walk out with a new one warranty and cashed in on it in October just before the 2 years was up.

My first PS2 (the launch unit) stopped functioning with PS1 games after 6-7 months.

Everything is fine with my current one, except for the fact that quite often when I boot up High Heat 2004 (on CD), it loads, then goes to the browser screen (shows the memory card and game disc). If I click on the disc it loads up just fine.

Many people have reported success in opening up the unit and cleaning the laser lens. There is only one lens in the PS2...Sony developed one that could read both CD's and DVD's for the PS2.

The only problems i've ever had with mine is DVD format stuff. It wouldn't play DVD's for a month or so, and then it stoped playing DVD Games(Gold Bottom), so I went out and got a disk cleaner. Every now and then it won't play something, so I just pop in my cleaner let it go around a few times and its as good as new. I think the main problem is dust.

You have to remember that PS2's (and XBox's for that matter) are just glorified cd-players. They're going to burn out eventually, especially since games are alot more cd-intensive then movies. PC cd-roms last longer, because most games install a good portion of their files onto the hard drive. (And no-cd patches work great to reduce the wear and tear on your drive.) The drives in a console on the other hand are accessed constantly for each game, and thus burn out quicker. (They're made of hardier stuff to prolong its lifespan, but the more hardcore gamer you are, the less time the cd drive has to live.)
