Found this explanation on the TSN board:
"...I know that was a significant price drop for Griffey and a few others.
Unfortunately, for those who held Griffey, that is the way the game is played. Occasionally, players’ prices take serious hits, when a player is widely owned and is injured..."

I couldn't find it. Seems pretty slim considering the copious evidence expressed on this board from sampling that something was way out of wack.
