Frequently Asked Questions

This thread is for everyone who visits Rotoguru, both new and old, in an attempt to avoid repetitive threads and keep things easy on the eyes.

If you have something to add to this please feel free to post it here. Moderators- if you want to fix anything, add to anything, etc, please do.

1. What's Rotoguru.com? And who is the Guru?

Rotoguru.com Home Page

Who Is The Guru?

2. Who are the members?

Anyone is welcome at Rotoguru. We are all here for the same reason, our love of sports. Anyone who shares that love is always welcome.

3. How does the Guru afford this site? Where can I donate?

This site is run using the money donated by its patrons. You can read about how it works here (including what the words Donor, Leader, and Sustainer mean) or view a list of the Patrons here.

4. How/Where do I talk about a player I wish to trade for/sell?

There are always threads created for the sole purpose of trading. Usually these threads are created new weekly and contain the words "Trading Thread" and the date it was started. We try to keep trading ideas confined to that thread to avoid cluttering the boards with useless threads.

5. Where can I find information about Injuries?

We also have a thread created solely for the purpose of updating injured players. The title usually contains the words "Injury Thread" and the date it was created.

6. Is ok to create a thread saying "Griffey Breaks leg, out for season"?

In some cases a thread like that is ok. We try to restrict injuries to the Injury Thread, but major developments like that sometimes require their own thread for massive discussion and to avoid major losses in the RV column.

7. Where can I discuss the daily price changes of each player?

We will sometimes have a thread created containing the words "Price Changes" and the current date. If that thread already exists just add to it. If it does not exist, feel free to start it. In the initial post please list the full list of price movers. Then use the following posts to discuss the price changes.

8. What/Where is "Roster Sampling? Or how do I know how many people own someone?

At Rotoguru we are all quite fortunate to have people here who have excellent mathematical and/or computer based skills. They have from time to time provided information to let us know which players may be heavily owned based on their viewing of "frozen rosters" at TSN. This is done only out of the kindness of their hearts. They are in no way required to do this. It is very time consuming and they do so only at their own leisure. Please try to avoid requesting this type of information. If they have time and feel like providing their information they will.

They typically will create a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet that can randomly sample team's frozen rosters and put together ownership levels for the benefit of our members. Currently for baseball APerfect10 runs a roster sampling program every Tuesday and Thursday. These document the ownership of pitchers and hitters. It is not an absolute number. Its only a small percentage of the full rosters that are sampled but it gives us an idea of what the TSN universe is like.

9. What is "Best Bets"?

That's a thread created each day by APerfect10 that allows Rotoguru visitors to place "fantasy wagers" on sports. He calculates the totals each day and keeps track of it in a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet. Anyone is welcome to bet there. Just follow his instructions in that thread.

10. What is "MLB Pick the Loser"?

That is a game currently run by J where Rotoguru visiters will select a team they expect to lose that day. Anyone is welcome to play. The game runs until there is one person left who picked nothing but losers. Once that happens a new game starts. You can read the current thread to see the rules.

11. What is a "Belly Division", "Guru Division", etc?

These divisions are created and run specifically for members of this board.

The Belly is a division which is run somewhat like a fraternity. They keep the same members in it as often as possible and play each other each year in all the sports. You can read more about it in any of the Belly related threads.

The Guru Divisions are either created by the Guru or by fellow Gurupies. Those divisions are sometimes open to everyone and sometimes by invite only to Patrons. Contact the Gurupie who is running the division if you are interested in joining.

12. Where can I talk about the current day's games and developments?

Typically around the time of the start of the first game a thread starts with the words "Action Thread" in it and the date. You can discuss all the action of the day's games and any other related topics in that thread. If the thread hasn't been created by game time feel free to do so. Please avoid creating multiple threads for Action.

13. What is Guru Jr?

Guru Jr. was created in an attempt to thank Gurupies who make these boards a more pleasant experience for everyone. They usually are people who provide services valuable to others, give informative insight, help out newcomers, or make this place a more enjoyable place for everyone with their own witty insight and commentary. You can read more about it and vote for a new Guru Jr in a thread that usually contains the words "Guru Jr."

14. Can we discuss other Fantasy Games here besides TSN?

Yes, all games are open to discussion. Many people here play numerous games so feel free to start a thread or join one for any of the games you play.

15. If I need help on a topic totally unrelated to Fantasy Sports can I ask for help here?

Yes. Assuming the topic is okay by typical moral standards you are more than welcome to seek help here. Just preface the the title of your thread with "OT" (Off Topic).

16. Where can I see up-to-the-minute TSN points?

A Gurupie here, KrazyKoalaBears, runs an excellent site named Kafenatid.net. He has a "TSN Calculator" there that keeps up to date point totals for each player in a game. The link to that site (and many others) is available in the drop down boxes each page of the forum.

17. What does "BUTT" mean?

Back Up To the Top. This allows a poster to move a thread back to the top of the forum so that readers can be reminded of something in that post. Once a thread gets a new post it immediately becomes the first topic listed in the forum, thus making it much easier to find.

18. What other great tools are available here?

There are many programs available for use in the drop down boxes located on each page of the forum. These programs have been created by either the Guru or other Gurupies.

Some of these programs include: Sortable Stats, Assimilator, and the Schedule Generator. Most of the items are free for everyone. Some of them have bonus tools available only to GuruPatrons (another great reason to donate; see #3)

19. How can I compare my teams to other Gurupies' teams?

Typically each sport has someone running a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet in the corresponding "Standings" forum where Gurupies have entered their teams to be ranked against other Gurupies. Check out the correct "Standings" forum for these threads (usually available for Basic and Ultimate games).

20. How come no one responds to my posts or they make smarta** commments instead?

People may not respond if your question is too open-ended or doesn't provide enough details. They may also not reply if a similar thread is already created. Try making the title of your post more informative as to what your topic is.

21. How does the Rating System work for each thread?

At the bottom of each thread is a system that allows you to rank the current thread. You can evaluate it based on how helpful the thread is. The rating allows other gurupies to see the rating and realize that it may or may not have any helpful features for them and thus save them wasted time.

22. How do I edit my posts?

You can't change anything you put into your posts, but you can delete them. Go to the thread you wish to delete a post in and click on the "Self-edit this thread" link that is placed at the top or bottom of each thread. Click on that. It will open a new window that will allow you to delete the necessary posts. If you delete the first post in the thread the whole thread will delete. If you feel that you need to edit something in your post contact a moderator via email.

23. Who are the moderators?

Moderators identities are not listed publically. Some are open about saying they are one, some keep that private. If you need to reach a moderator just email the Guru directly by clicking here.

24. How do I make words appear in bold, italics, underlined, etc.

To make words appear in bold, type "whatever you want" to bold like this: {b}whatever you want{/b} but replace the {} with <>.
To make words appear in italics, type "whatever you want" in italics like this: {i}whatever you want{/i} but replace the {} with <>.
To underline words, type "whatever you want" like this: {u}whatever you want{/u} but replace the {} with <>.

25. How can I contribute to the forum in a positive way?

Any of the following things will make your visits to Rotoguru enjoyable for both yourself and your fellow Gurupies.

- Local news and reports
- Find a niche
- Share your specialty be it common sense, mathematics, humor or anything in between
- Respect those who have been around as well as new members.
- "Lurk" for a bit before you post to find out what's going on
- Ask for help and solicit ideas
- If you get rejected, don't quit, just come back with something better!
- Have fun, but be willing to give and not just take.

Farn-- awesome job. It looks even better than the original version. I think some people will have all their problems solved by reading #20 :-) I'm gonna keep the adress permanently copied so that I can refer people to it instantly!

One caveat to everyone: Don't just point peole to this thread every time any question comes up.

I'd suggest giving the answer, too, as well as showing them this thread.

Remember, we're supposed to be a friendly group, too :-)

Thanks guys. Lots of thanks to Chuck for his suggestions as well.

When citing this thread to a newbie I would say give them the # of the question they are asking. They may not want to dig around for it.

And like Chuck said, try to offer them the correct answer or reasoning if possible when citing this.

I was just about to post that, darkside! Guru's Welcome page helps spell out what not to do on these boards--almost as important as knowing what to do.

Some specific things we don't do here:

-crow about our rankings (the best of the best are on these boards, myself excluded. No need to talk about our rankings since we exist to get everyone in the top);
-engage in personal attacks;
-feed trolls (that is, respond to posts or threads designed strictly to elicit sharp responses. Let a moderator take care of those).

Oh, and don't forget: "Sartible" = "sortable" and "Perm Dude" = "kack" = "jack" = "dinger."

Wow, great job Farn!

Now if we could only get a Moderator to edit this and make this a link on the top of this baseball thread page.

I don't have a niche really, I just exist. I wonder what that says about me. The main problem being I can't do math well and couldn't tell a spreadsheet from my bedsheets... but I am always smiling! and have a gambling problem.
