0 Subject: Empirical proof of "Yankeephillia"

While looking at the price gainers this year its been hard not to notice that many Yankees are on the list. Sure the Yankees are having a great start, but can that explain all of the buys?

I've had the sneaking suspicion that "Yankeephillia" (The love of the Yankees)has been part of the reason for some players gaining roster value as quickly as they have.

Now of course Soriano and Williams are at the top of their position lists as is Mussina, so they were going to get buys anyway. But the added affection for Yankee players has at least played some part in increasing their cash gains as well as the gains of other pinstripers.

The natural affection that managers have for Yankee players may lead them to follow the team more closely and notice for instance, when Nick Johnson begins to make a move.

Now of course you may be sceptical that the Yankees are the favorite team in America, but here is the definitive proof that the Yankees are indeed America's fan favorites.

Assuming that the cross section of TSN managers follows the same trends, it follows that there is a positive bias towards the Yankee players. And that bias might be factored into your calculations if all other indicators are equal on two players. (I.E. Nick Johnson over Richie Sexson)

Or, it may mean nothing. In which case it's still interesting to see how the Torre led Yankee's have displaced the Braves as "America's Team."

I sometimes stay away from Yankee players because they are expensive and highly owned. I started this young season with zero Yankees, nada, zilch, not a one. But pinstripes are creeping on my team because they are playing well.

Moose is showing studlike behavior in a month when the usual suspects have crashed and burned. Soriano is heading for super stardom. Nick Johnson is hitting well, even if it's only a hot streak. Bernie is a solid roster pick in any season.

Now though we need a survey asking which major league team do you dislike. The Yankees would win that one far and away and I would suspect by more than the 17% that like them. This leads to people who refuse to pick up Yankees of which I have seen quite a bit of on these boards.

Most fantasy managers are not stupid. I dislike the Yankees, but if you do not have Yankee players on your team your shooting yourself in the foot.

Fantasy managers know you don't have to like a team to want their players. I hate Clemens, but picked him up for his next two games because I know he'll get me points.

I'm in the Yankee hater boat and sometimes don't pick up a Yankee, if I see another alternative... Currently I have Soriano and Nick Johnson... I was going to get Bernie too, but didn't want 3 guys on one team, regardless of Yankees or not.... As for Pitchers, the Yankee starters are doing well so far and should be valid considerations, I just haven't had any of them yet.

Having the other Yankees in the line-up helps Nick Johnson because he'll get better pitches, have more RBI chances, is more likely to score a run when on base, etc.

It seems no different than when people buy middle-of-the-pack Rockies (in addition to guys like Helton and Walker) when they're smacking the ball around Coors.

The reality is that hitting .400 won't get you many TSNPs if there is nobody on base and nobody to drive you in. It's better to hit .250 with some dingers on a team that's been pounding the living **** out of the ball lately, which sadly is the Yankees right now (I speak as a Mets fan).

Picking up Bernie Williams in the first week of the season has been the last good move I have made this year. I'd probably have a lot more TSNP if I had just drafted the Yankees rotation and starting line-up from day one and sat on it.
