0 Subject: Is the competition tougher this year?

Is it just me . . . or is the game a bit more competitive this year compared to last year?

I know it’s a long season, but as of May 1st my best team is sitting at WWR 4,900. Last year my worst team was about WWR 220. Although I have made some poor decisions (Escobar / Hafner / RJ & Curt for most of their bad outings), I have had my share of good nights as well. I decided to use the Gurupie Standings to compare the results at May 1, 2003 to the results at May 1, 2002. The stats seem to show that the rest of the game is catching up to us a bit.

The Gurupies standings are quite similar to last year.
... . . . . ... . . .. . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . This Yr . . Last Yr

Top Gurupie TSNP . . . . . . . . . . 4,875 . . . 5,078
20th place Gurupie TSNP. . .. . . 4,422 . . . 4,397
Managers in Top 20 in Gurupies
standings over $60M in RV. . . . . 13 . . . . . .10

#1 Gurupie in TSNPs . . . . . .Dale’sTit . . Dale’s Tit

So it looks like there is not a big difference in Points and RV from one year to the next in the Gurupie standings (We even have the same early leader . . way to go Dale's Tit).
Where the big difference comes is where we stand in WWR compared to the rest of the pack.

. . . . . . . . . . ... . . . . . . . . . . . .This Yr. . .Last Yr

Top Gurupie WWR . . . . . . . . .272. . . . . 17
Gurupies in top 100. . . . . . . . . . 0 . . . . . . . 6
Gurupies in top 1,000 . . . . . .. . . 6 . . . . . .33

By the end of the year last year 25 Gurupies were in the top WWR 25 . . . but they were also a lot closer to the top at May 1 than they are this year.

Wonder if it’s just a statistical glitch, or is the competition overall getting better.

Should say that last year 25 Gurupies were in the top 100 WWR, not top 25 WWR.

I think it's that last year, we had some sure things, IE RJ, Schilling, Pedro and this year pitchers are more of a crap shoot, thus affecting our WWR. We have all these tools and we have all these strategies, but really when you get curves balls like earlier this season, you have to rely a lot on luck. We just haven't been as lucky as we were last year. Not to put down his team but, J is a perfect example, we all know he is a good manager, but he isn't having a good year right now. That's jus the way it is.

Could have a lot to do with Curt and RJ melting down this year. Having them is a big part of gurupie strategy to garner big points while maknig money gains. There could be a large number of people who just don't employ a strategy including those 2. Over the course of the whole season, the gurupie crowd will probably bounce back. But this early in the season when a 100 point swing from 1 game is the difference between the top 100 and top the 1000, relying on RJ and Schilling and then not having them deliver could hurt.

What happened to Dale's Tit last year. I recall he led the early standings for a while, but in the final standings he was at the bottom with a zillion unused trades. I guess he couldn't manage his team for the last half.

I just recall last year never being in the bottom half of the standings after the first month, but this year I stand at 4900, 7700 & 9000 WWR. I guess I'm looking for some statistical reasons as to why my teams stink so far. Heaven forbid . . . it couldn't be that I just don't know what the hell I'm doing this year! lol

It gives me hope seeing that the poor start is somewhat universal in our forum.

bmd and I just felt like switching places this year....

One thing that bothers me about the RJ injury is there will be another month+ that we will not be able to use him, therefore helping others.

Top 100 RV's are much better this year. I remember seeing a lot of sub 54's in there last year at this time.

If you have played both years, I think you can really use the standings as a measuring stick because the scoring system is the same. The only real difference is positiion eligibility and Griffey's sell day.

No blown saves and more for hitter strikeouts changed as well.

IIRC, that was two years ago. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

You're right. Those rules were the same last year.

Did pitcher BB's go down to 3 this year or last?

Yeah, you're right, SW, my bad. Don't know why I thought that other than I didn't remember there being so many -6, -9, -12, etc for so many of my hitters. The closer thing, now that I think, is obvious as last year I drafted closers because of the rule change. Thanks.

Even though we may be ranked lower this year to this point, the actual TSN points differences are not great. A couple weeks of some diamonds in the rough or some nice pitcher starts will help us make the rise. For me most of my points have come from my hitters. I've been awful in pitching. I think once we get our banks up there a little more we will be able to go for the higher priced pitchers and not worry as much about making the money on cheapies. I don't know.

Ref . . you are correct that the point differences are little, and things can change fast. My top team that was at WWR 4,900 a couple days ago got just over 400 TSNPs the last 2 days total, but moved up 800 places to WWR 4074.

I still think it looks strange to see in the Gurupie standings only 1 team in the top 700 WWR.

Jesse . . the teams I am referring to are the ones in Philyflyboy's Ultimate standings for May 1. (In the Baseball Standings Section). I believe there are 113 teams listed with only 1 in the top 700 WWR.
We can only put 1 of our teams in this 'league' that Philflyboy kindly keeps track of. I'm sure there are other Gurupies with multiple teams whose other teams are doing better so far, but I think the Gurupie standings is a good indicator of how we are doing as a group so far.
If you go back to the May 1 standings from last year, you will see that on the whole the teams were doing much better at this time last year.

I also noticed my divisions are far more competitive than last year, and when i look at the top guy at the moment , he has like 9 trades left, and all those points and even good RV, how the hell to catch him, lol
