0 Subject: Cool story about Rob Beck

Posted by: The Pink Pimp

I stumbled across this story about Rob Beck and thout I'd post it for those who are interested. Seems he's on the comeback trail in AAA and living in a motorhome behind center field.

Talk about a change of pace! Read the article and try not be pulling for the guy.

OMG, are you kidding me? This guy was one of the worse pitchers in bball before the injury. This story would have "interesting" had it been his OBIT. The guy is a redneck sob. Hope he makes it back and gets shelled then released. A#1 LOSER!

Beck is old school and was a joy to watch. This coming from a guy who dislikes the closer position. When Beck came to the mound you knew it was over. The Goose and Beck where always two of my favorite players and I am glad to see that Beck is working on coming back, even if it may only be for a year or two at the most.

Gman15,
how right you are. I was more than just a little sleepy when I posted this and besides misspelling his name, I also misspelled "thought" and forgot a word in the second sentence. Gotta drink more coffee I guess.

BTW 85, it's a motorhome if it has an engine and you can drive it away, if it's up on blocks and your uncle Pete lives out back, it's like yours and it's a trailer.

The guys sucks, he is a horrible pitcher, and horrible sob that has no place in baseball. I hope his "motorhome" gets blown away by a tornadoe while he is "driving" it off the lot.

Rod Beck is horrible?

are we talking about the same Rod Beck?

the one that's in the top 20 all-time for saves? top 5 of active pitchers?

266 career saves, most of them during a six-year period where he averaged nearly 40 saves a year?

a career WHIP 1.16, lower than legendary closers Lee Smith, John Franco, Jeff Reardon, Randy Myers, Goose Gossage, Bruce Sutter, Dan Quisenberry, Sparky Lyle, and Bobby Thigpen, just to name a few?

yea, Rod Beck sucks.

peace,
Tree

I saw Rod pitch tonight in San Diego. Lots of curve balls and very little heat. Location looked good however. Gave up a single and then got one out to end the inning. Can't say he'll be worse then the current padre pen and at the the low price he was signed for he should be worth the flyer. The latest press hints that Beck may eventually be given the closer slot so that other players can get back to their intended roles.

Also read that the Cubs released him so that he could be signed by the Padres which strikes me as a class gesture from the Cubs organization.

Beck was supposedly only throwing 84-85 mph with his fastball, but his bread and butter now is his curve and change. If you throw 85, and instead throw a 75 change, that can mess with people's heads alot.

pimp - post 26 - while i can't quote the source, i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that part of Beck's contract with the Cubs allowed him to leave if another MLB squad wanted to sign him to the ML roster.

From USAToday Sports section:
RHP Rod Beck was not injured when he was struck on the back of the head by a fly ball during batting practice. He fell to his knees but left under his own power. "There's nothing there to hurt," quipped Beck, who pitched Tuesday and got his 11th save.

I've had him in Yahoo and TSN since just after his first save. He ties up very little cash in TSN--a nice quiet source of points.

Hey PP, was Beck's trailer right outside the ballpark? It would be a great to go drink a beer with him after he saved a game.

I kind of reluctantly picked up Beck in my Yahoo league...was not going to use my waiver position on him...but glad I picked him up...he has been better than my other two closer and really helped out my pitching staff...he has been a top 10 closer in the few months he has played.

I am glad for the guy...always liked him as a Cub...never really thought of him as a great closer but he always seemed to give it all he had. In 98 when the Cubs won the wildcard they threw him until his arm fell off as he and Mulholland were basically their entire bullpen.
