I'm extremely bored at work and rather than actually work I thought I'd start a thread where everyone shared their alcoholic drink of choice.

My favorite beer has to be Blue Moon. It's got a great taste and goes down very smooth. It's even better with an orange in it.

If I'm drinking hard liquor, I prefer any drink with vodka in it.

Sounds like I'll have to try Blue Moon after all the rave reviews. Personally, I drink mainly what's on sale and like to vary. Right now I'm drinking Grolsch a few months ago it was Bass and Becks. I really prefer any type of dark beer but the ones I prefer are rarely on sale, LOL.

Blue Moon Belgian White is pretty good stuff when you've got to pick something up from the grocery store.

When you can get it on tap though, go for *anything* from Leavenworth Brewery (although I'm sure they don't distribute much beyond the NW).

Biliruben -- the local establishment I visit just added Leavenworth's IPA on tap this past week. Greatness!!! Love it.

Sierra Nevada

Absolut - on the rocks or with a little tonic.

and bmds comment on wineries was right on the button.

Right now, I'm into the Paso Robles Wineries (California) Most are boutique wineries with very limited production.

We hit 17 wineries in 3 days while on vacation.
I brought home 4-1/2 cases of wine.
Lots of stuff that you wouldn't normally find.
A couple of great Ports. Remember, I am a cigar smoker, so as expected, I do love Port.

Urgh. The only thing I like less than coors light is their stupid wingman commercial.

Blue moon at a grocery store? That would be cool. Since I moved back to oklahoma I can't find it anywhere. In Iowa I could only find it in liquor stores.

The song really irks me. "It's the reason you're heeeah" - blech. That kind of singing always gives me the heebie jeebies, so to speak. I know that I'm taking it a little too seriously, but I can't help but notice that the commercial sends the cultural message that going out dancing and getting laid is "living the dream".

Beer of Choice: Boddington's

Best bet for a beer in a can :)

Drink of Choice: Tom Collins with Tanqueray

If i'm drinking liquor I always start with this drink. Has anyone else noticed that Gin seems to clear the palette?

Most new beer commercials irk me. Don't get me wrong, I love women and stupid jokes as much as the next guy but the new wave of commercials is just plain low brow. The lesbian commercial is funny maybe twice and the "Guys night out" commercials showing guys running around and clanging their beer bottles together every chance theyget, it's just stupid. I don't know, maybe I'm pissed that I (my gender) is being portrayed as a bunch of horny frat boys. I do find the "So date both of us" commercial hysterical, though.

As far as booze go, I drink whatever is around pretty much. As fellow Atlantans can attest, Sweetwater is a pretty darn good local beer. I guess my favorite mainstream beer is Bass. Good stuff.

I really like beer. I think my favorite is Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout. Other favorites are Bass Ale, Pete's Wicked Winter Brew and any Berliner Weisse with Woodruff syrup.
I also really like gin. My favorite gin drink is Tanqueray 10 with tonic. Bombay Saphire is really good, too. But neither works well as a martini. For martinis I prefer Bombay Original gin to Tanqueray, which is much more popular (and more expensive).

MITH, next time I come in I'll bring you some good beers from my neck of the woods. River Horse Ale out of Lambertville is pretty good.

Lots of good wine in New Jersey, of all places. In fact, my wife and I had our wedding reception at Kings Road Winery in Hunterdon County. Good white wine, reisling, and decent red (I really don't like dark wines, so maybe it's awesome for all I know).

I love Orval, Toral

Beer may be one of the few items that have recently reclaimed regionalism. The vast majority of this country is stuck in Bad-Beersville, you know, the areas where people drink Blue Moon and swoon. Hey, when I lived in South Carolina, Blue Moon was probably the best beer on the shelf.

The West Coast has been way ahead of the curve with literally thousands of excellent handcrafted beers. Red Hook and Pyramid were once hand crafted, then they grew, were bought by Anheiser Busch and Miller, and now suck. Of course if you live in Iowa and have to choose between Grain Belt, Budweiser, and Red Hook ESB, there is no question.

I'm a snob and don't like beer from a bottle unless it is imported from Belgium, particularly a Framboise Lambic from Lindeman's

This beer does not air any "guys night out" ads. It is the ideal beer to drink stoned as the flavor is sublime, great for after dinner, not at the ballgame.

Agree with the Prez and biliruben, Leavenworth is an excellent local brewery. There are at least ten locals that make excellent IPA's. Also fond of Dick's out of Chehalis. Arrogant Bastard Ale from Stone Brewery in SD, CA is a great beer.

Love red wine, not a snob just yet.

Saffire and tonic are appropriate just about anywhere, anytime. Again, nice complement to cannabis intake, the two great tastes that taste great together. Summers are a great time for mohitos, white rum and mint. Winters sometime call for hot drinks. I'm fond of variations on Baileys and Kaluha.

The local store did have Blue Moon Belgian Ale and I was hard pressed not to buy it (in spite of it being a Coors product), but in keeping with my sale price model I opted to follow the advice of an old Goat and go with the Sierra Nevada. Very much what I like :)

I might have to try the Pete's Wicked Ale next as it was on sale as well. The Sam Smith's Oatmeal Ale was very tempting as I read good reviews on it, but at close to $3 a bottle, well, let's just say I have a kid in college. I really plan to try as many of these as I can, except for the Coors Light (*holding nose*)

The only beer I really like is Corona.

But hard liquor is a different story. I love Ketel One on the rocks and for a shot, nothing beats patron silver.

I'm not much into wine, but Charles Shaw makes a good merlot. and most of the chilean reds are good also.

Chesterfield Ale, 1800, and any red Penfolds. I will have to try this "blue moon". Sounds like the high ratings come from experience. The wingman commercial is a riot (so your Buddy can live the dream...)

Ha! I loaded up this thread to plug Arrogant Bastard, but I see SZ has beaten me to it! :) It is some good stuff. Alcohol content is fairly high, so one of those supersize bottles is more than enough for me. Also agree with Zen on the Lambic. Who needs dessert.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale is fantastic when you can get it on tap.

Another brewery to check out if you get a chance is Hair of the Dog in Portland. Pretty spendy as beers go, but wow. Indulgent beers. Adam and Rose are fantastic; I haven't been lucky enough to try Ruth or Fred yet :) I would almost liken drinking an Adam to smoking a cigar, actually.

Of course, when in doubt, a classic Sam Adams has never done me wrong :)

I poke my head in and look what thread I find...

A few off the tip of my tongue that I would highly recommend:

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
Duvel Belgian Ale
Aventinus Weiss Dopplebock
Paulaner Salvator Double Bock
Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier
Chimay Premiere (red cap)
Bass or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale/Porter in a pinch. Also a big fan of the Anchor beers. Guinness if I can find a good pint.

All you Blue Moon drinkers should try Hoegaarten. Also, Celis White if it's still even in existance, but the Hoegaarten is the top in that category.

And a shout out to ksoze for keeping a little of the Mackesons on hand for just this sort of occasion!! ;)

Ok, back to my pint...

Oh, and Dave R, trust me, no diet is worth Coors Light!

I actually prefer blue moon over hoegaarten - every time I try a different belgian white I am disappointed - just my personal preference. Blue moon is only $6 for 6, and I think hoegaarten is 12$ for 4 around here.
If any of you ever stop through OKC, you gotta eat at the Copperhead (bricktown). It's a microbrewery/BBQ place - awesome ales, good price, great food. Last time I was there I could hardly get out of my seat - not sure if it was the ribs or the ale! :)

i'm a tequila drinker. to the point now where my folks know that if they can't figure out what to get me as a gift, a nice bottle of something from the agave plant does well.

as for beer, i can't stand the stuff. i had a couple sips of a somewhat strong and tasty german thing last night, but after a couple of sips, it churns my stomach.

cider, on the other hand, rocks. the british stuff is an ass kicker, and most of the stuff made in the states is good as long as it's not something like Hornsby (made by Gallo).

french and scandanavian ciders suck, because they have very little alcohol in them.

i've got too many to name that i like, and some i've had once or twice but not been able to find since (johnny mash comes to mind)....

peace,
Tree

I'm not much of a beer drinker anymore but if I'm to have one then
Fosters works for me. I usually only drink beer when I'm out playing
golf or at the ball park.

I use to enjoy Johnny Walker Red when it comes to hard liquor. Use
to think that it was pretty smoooth. Don't touch the stuff anymore though.

Anymore I'll have a glass of wine at night, usually a nice merlot.

Snob citing. Here I go. Tongue in cheek, but after living in California and NY for most of my life, I have earned the snobbish tastes that are mine. I dang well like good food, too!

Oh Kahan, that shi*t is horrid. They serve that all over Pennsylvania and when I am there over the summer, I avoid. Just like Virginia with those dang state run alcohol beverage centers. Makes me ill. How can one part of the country (Louisiana) have drive-through liquor stores open till midnite and the other have state run stores that are open for 8 hours or so? Aaargh.

Me. Interesting thread, clearly some correlations with age, geographic locale and taste.

oh, and at the risk of getting machine gunned by my man PD, no, the wine in NJ is NOT good. It is there though. And the wine in Long Island is not good, nor in upstate NY. But I am sure there are homers in each area who would strongly disagree.

Beer: Unless it's Sam Adams or Anchor, there are few Amerikan beers I drink. They are too watery. I have not had anything like a bud or coors in years, and if I am forced too, I chase them with nyquil to catch a buzz. Beers I do like: I have never tried blue moon odom, but love heavy beers from Belgium, France and weissbiers from Germany. I love Guinness. I love Guinness ON TAP. I really like German beers like Paulaner and the others I had when I was over there. I like French beers like Fischer, the good Fischer, there are so many but one is preferable to me than the others. Who can remember which one? when I buy beer in the store, I usually get Amstel Light, Heineken, Becks, Sam Adams, Grolsch, Harp, Bass, etc.

;-)

Liquor: I drink vodka. Mostly with tonic. I am partial to the foo-foo good vodkas, but usually get Absolut Mandarin with Tonic. I also like a margarita, but on the rocks, and no salt. Vodka martinis with multiples olives are good, too. The rage in NYC and other cities with the chicks (think sex and the city) are apple martinis. Waaaaaaaay too sweet.

I also like a pastis (pernod or ricard are the popular one's...yes, I have no franco-phobias) as these are great anise-flavored liquors that are 80 proof. I usually cut them 50-50 with water which is not what they do in France (20-80 is the norm). Sip on those all night long.

Shots: I do not do too many shots since I learned that savoring my alcohol goes down better. However, that to-kill-ya stuff is pretty good. 1800 will have to be tried.

Wine: I lived in SF for five years so am partial to California wines instead of French wines. I like a hearty, heavy, thick, oozing with pus type cabernet, so I like my Californians. Grgich and Cakebread are my faves. I like merlots, pinots, (real) zinfandels, and I like whites, too. I like wine!

Finally, when it's really hot out, and I am at the swim club with the kiddies, and it's lunch time, those new Citronas, Smirnoff Ice (etc.) are very easy to pound to quench the thirst (7-Up with 5% alcohol). Quite tasty if ya need something soda-like but want a buzz.

There's a craft brewery deep in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, in a pub called Le Diable. Of their Trappist-style brews, the very best is Extreme Onction. Which is French, of course, and translates as Extreme Unction. Which if you were raised Catholic, you will understand.

I hope to die drinking this beer.

Catfish,
Interesting choice of words...

Holt,
Give the Celis White a try. It was created by the Hogaarten brewer after he left Belgium for Texas.

Hmmm... I just found an article about Celis White - seems it's been defunct for a while but a Michigan group has bought all the equipment from Miller (who bought out Celis in '95). Sounds like the new brewery may produce the Celis beers. We'll see how this turns out.

Check out realbeer.com if you've never been. A great resource for brewery hopping if you're ever out of town (or in town for that matter), and all other things beer.

BTW, anyone out there (besides me) into collecting beer glassware?

Unfortunately, Yuengling opened a brewery in Florida and they ship the beer in from there now to the rest of Pa!!!
Luckily Pottsville (where the original brewery is) still gets their's fresh. I get up there 1-2 times a year for MA seminars. Get the good stuff.
Oh, and I saw somebody mentioned Sierra Nevada. Talk about piss water. I was so drunk one time, I was seeing triple (and thought a fat chick was hot, uggh). Somebody handed me a pale ale, I took one sip and spit it out. I guess we each have our own tastes.

Walk,
Since you like (Real) Zins, you would just love the stuff coming out of the Paso Robles area of California now.
This area has just erupted in wineries.
There are now about 75 of them in and around Paso Robles and Templeton.
Not normally a Zin drinker, but really enjoyed what I found there and actually bought quite a bit.

I agree with you about the age correlation also.

#57, Catfish. That reminds me of the time I visited Germany (Hark, where are you?!?) and went to this brewery about 45 minutes outside of Munich. It was actually a monestary and of course, we know how good of a brew those monks make! Well, a pint of this stuff was about as strong as a pint of wine, lemmetellyou! And it was so dang smooth and delicious. What a GREAT place. Best bier I ever ate.

GoatLocker, Cliff: Good to know. Good to know. I have mainly visited wineries in Napa, and may be in Sonoma around Labor Day, but am not sure where Paso Robles is (?). South? East?

I love that wine tasting thing, and the restaurants in Napa are some of the best in the nation. Truly one of the classiest, yet laid back things to do with a lady.

Paso Robles is South of Monterey (another wine area that has grown a lot).
Basically due East from Cambria on highway 46.
First time we had been there, but won't be the last.
Since we live in Camarillo(South of Santa Barbara), we generally hit the wineries in the Santa Ynez valley.

Any questions, give me a shout.

Sorry walk for quoting you here but I just found it funny that how you called out American beers for being weak. True, but Guinness is also one of the weakest beers around. It feels hearty though. Maybe a little too hearty. I generally pass on Guinness unless I've missed a couple of meals that day. Otherwise, its just too filling. I do like black n whites though, a variation on a black n tan using Hoegarten instead of Bass or Harp.
