0 Subject: Myth or Fact? "Second Half Players"

There is a kid in my Yahoo league who keeps on saying that some players are always money in the second half. I do agree that some players may concentrate more on second half and play little better but my friend seems to think that in second half, some players always do better every season. If I ask for examples, he usually mentions players that did well on the second half last season. Frankly, I'm getting tired of hearing this crap from him.

I strongly disagree with my friend, so I thoguht I'd check with the best source in the world. Is it true that some players are always money in the second half? He says names like, Shannon Stewart, most of Oakland players (ie Tejada, Mulder) and some others.

I think he's just an idiot.

It's difinitey a fact that there are second half players and I disagree with the link to the other thread, I think this is a completely different topic.. The other thread says who do we speculate will do it this year.. This one says. Is it a true theory and are their any current examples of guys who have this proven record.......
Al Belle is a prime and well documented case from the past. He consistently had drastically better second halves than first. I don't know if there is anyone else as blatant, but they definitely exist out there.. Some of the player page sites have the pre and post ASB splits for players, so it's easy enough to look up guys that you think might fit the category....

Bagwell in Houston comes to mind as a slow starter, good 2nd half player. I grabbed him after the ASB this year and so far again this year he has been much better than in the 1st half.

ok since some of you say it does exists,

from the following list of players, can someone tell me who has history of having a great second half? Also, if someone could tell me where I can find stats in Pre ASB and Post ASB, that would be great

Manny Ramirez
Carlos Beltran
Lance Berkman
Preston Wilson (I guess he doesnt)
Sheffield
Pierre
Mora(just throwing in there as "will he keep it up?")

Yahoo's player pages show lots of splits, including before and after the ASB. Just click on Splits on a player's page.

I know ESPN has then too, but I prefer Yahoo's layout. Also, EPSN's site is still sluggish for me.

A handful of 2nd half players that jump to mind:
Johnny Damon
Jim Thome
Sammy Sosa (though he usually turns it on in June)
Pedro (cause he is usually hurt in the first half and lights out in the second half).
..
I think you'll find the majority of players are consistent the whole year through. But there is definitely a group of guys who first half players and a group of guys who are second half players.

By the way, sometimes a player does actual suck, and the first half is just a reflection of that. If you pick up Shannon Stewart right now, even for Bobby Kielty, you're going to regret it.

Paul LoDuca is the ultimate example of the tale of two halves. The guy is great the first half and is pathetic for the second half.
2003 - Still way early, but hitting .186 Post-ASB (.305 Pre-ASB).
2002 - 93 point drop in BA.
2001 - Good second half, but still a 48 point drop in BA.
Career - 53 point drop in second half for career.

You can contribute some of it to being a catcher, but that is terrible.
