Apparently 'Slap Shot' is hilarious, but IMO didn't find it all that funny..

I liked 'The Replacements' personally.. Also, if 'The Sandlot' counts, that's hilarious..

Slapshot was classic. The Replacements, unfortunately, suffers from a malady too many sports movies fall prey to. Underdog losers. Bonding moment. Win the big game.

Great drama when it happens in real life, terrible movie though.

Not to say that all movies that follow that formula are bad, but there's generally something else that makes them rise above mediocrity. Major League was funny. Rudy was true. Jerry Maguire had a good love story.

Another good one is A League of Their Own. Field of Dreams.

The last two don't fit that formula... just throwing them out there.

My personal favorite, a holdover from high school glory days (well, as close as my days in high school got to glory anyhow):

Vision Quest.

I forget the name of my personal "Shoot". He went to Mepham High School - the same school that had their football season canceled this year because of the hazing assaults at football camp. Like Lauden Swayne, I was physically inferior to my nemesis in every conceivable way (well - as far as I know), but unlike the movie hero I actually got to take on my behemoth twice. He beat me in something like 25 seconds in our first meeting, but I turned the tables in our second match the following year when he was indifferent enough to allow me to take him into the second period, at the very beginning of which he contorted me into another terribly embarrassing pin, only this time in front of my friends and family.

Ahhh high school. Thanks wiggs.

Rudy - Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!
Rocky 4 - people always say that every Rocky after the first one was garbage but Rocky 4 was awesome

I thought Bull Durham was overrated. Good but not great. Rocky 4 was great because Drago was more heinous and invincible than any of his previous opponents. Not the best of movies, but a fine inspirational flick. The little underdog American who is past his prime avenges his mentor's death by beating the huge, invincible Soviet. Not academy award winning stuff but enjoyable to watch.

And I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Like Mike or Air Bud.

A movie I really liked when I was younger, and haven't seen since, was One on One with Robbie Benson. It's probably crap, but when I was a kid I thought it was amazing. Same with Coach starring a hot hot Cathie Lee Crosbie (every high school basketball players dream coach), I think that was her name.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the classic Youngblood starring Rob Lowe and the mullet headed Patrick Swayze as "hockey" players. lol

Story about life at the racetrack and one great day.(horses not NASCAR). Richard Dreyfuss was great in this flick. Funny as hell if you were ever in to horse racing.

Bull Durham (the wit, the chemistry!)
Bang the Drum Slowly (DeNiro and Moriarity and the understated aspect of it all, so well done)
Field of Dreams (very weighty, but pure love of the game, too)
Raging Bull (considered by film pundits to be one of the best flicks of all-time, let alone a sports flick)

Others I liked:

Cool Runnings
Hoosiers
The Natural (for the heart)
Rudy
Rollerball (awesome)
Kingpin (very funny!)
White Men Can't Jump (funny)
SlapShot (a classic)
North Dallas Forty (very good film; ESPN's new show only wishes it can be as superb as this)

Others I must see:

Baseketball (since I love South Park)
Prefontaine (supposed to be superb)
I hear that "The Backyard," a documentary about extreme wrestling amongst teenagers is supposed to be horrific. I would love to see it.

I'm not sure if you would qualify this as a sports movie but, the "Hustler" starring Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason and George C. Scott is a fantastic movie sports or no. I also forgot to mention the "Monty Stratton Story" and "Soul of the Game" fantastic story about Josh Gibson and Satchiel Paige.

Grab some munchies and settle down to a made-for-tv movie of the Nancy Kerrigan Olympic skating troubles. I give it two knee caps.

Well, not a sports movie, but Ben Hur has a great Chariot race.

Sports movies are pale and flacid compared to the real thing. The two best movies reagrding sports I've ever seen are two documentaries that show the beauty and power of a champion and the beauty and artistry of athletism:

When we were Kings
