I was wondering if anyone had any experience playing poker online. If so I've got a couple of questions:
1. What site do you use? 2. How are the rakes comparable to other sites? 3. What type of games do you play, low stakes, high stakes, tournament? 4. Do you have more money now then when you started? 5. Do you recommend starting an account? |

How dare you impose your poker-playing views on the rest of us!
But seriously, I like playing 50 hand video poker. Anyone know where that is?

bmd, one thing to be cautious of. Unless things have changed (and I admit I haven't followed the industry over the last year or so), online gambling is not regulated in any way shape or form. Thus, there is no regulated payout average, nor any other form of control to ensure that the person gambling the money at least has a reasonable shot at winning money. Further, most sites are run offshore in countries whose governments don't exactly enforce laws like the US does. If you like Poker a lot, I recommend taking the money from your friends or head to the closest casino. You'll be playing under a regulated system and you'll have someone to complain to if something runs afoul.

bmd- if you want to play online but avoid getting ripped off try
pacificpoker.com
There is a fake money section and an area to play for real money. I have never done real money so I can't speak to that but the fake money section is relatively fun considering its not for real.

bmd...I play online pretty often. I have played on most of the major sites.
You can win a lot of money...most of the major poker sites are legit. They have no reason to cheat you...they just want players so they can collect the rake. If you are a good poker player...you can win a LOT of money.
I play mostly no-limit Hold'em but I have played nearly every game including tournaments.
Email me and I will give you all of the details.

I like partypoker. PL and NL hold 'em. The tournaments are the most fun but it seems to me that you win more money at the regular tables. Partypoker also has play-money tables and tourneys so you can work on your game before throwing away real money.

I play at paradise poker 90% of the time, and at poker room the other 10%. Paradise is the best, and the best game to play there in my opinion for the money is the $10 no limit mini-tourny. it costs you the $10 buy in plus $1 to the house. pays the top 3 places $20/$30/$50. you own't get rich, but a game usually lasts an hour to win. you get to play a lot of hands and you will get much much better playing like this. at paradise poker playing these tournies, i am up roughly $200, but I have lost overall about $250 playing anything from $100 buy in tournies to .50/1 low limit games to 2/4 no limit.
paradise poker's interface is the best imho.

Is the interface different? I thought they all used that same crappy one where all the people have deformed hands and stuff. I will have to check that out.

Use a 3rd party like neteller, firepay, IMG. I personally use neteller which is free if you can wait for your money to 'float' (takes about a week) from your bank account to their system.
If you are using party or ultimatebet, LMK, if I refer you, we both get some bonus money.
I've been able to win big money in a relative short amount of time playing online poker- if you really study the game. By big money, I'm not talking 3 figure sums.
Best of luck!

Yeah, I saw the referral thing. I'll do it if I can still get my 20-25% bonus on my initial deposit. I'm probably going to end up signing up for partypoker as they have the most tourneys and the most inexperienced players.

Yes, I recommend party where I play mostly. Lots and lots of action. I'll send you an email bmd.
Also forgot to mention, neteller does 'instant' transfers for I think 8% fee which is reasonable if you want to deposit a small amount now while you wait for the rest of your deposit to clear.
Lastly, I have never had problems with party or neteller regarding deposits/withdrawls. Party pays out extremely fast, within 24 hours- if you are concerned with such matters.

Yes, you can combine your referal money and bonus deposit together. Referal money is free, bonus requires you to play hands to unlock.

I think you're mistaken. Everything I've read is promotions can't be combined and the 20% on my initial deposit will be more than the $25 bonus.

I can't guarantee anything. But I received a referal bonus and deposit bonus for my first deposit. My friend (who I referred) also received the same. You can always email support if you want to find out for sure.
I don't want to screw you over, so if you want to play it safe just go with your deposit bonus. It's sort of messed up but after playing serious poker for a bit, 50 dollars loses its significance as a sum... I don't really care if I get that referral money!

The 20% bonus on a players first deposit as well as the $25 Tell-a-Friend bonus are signup bonuses. We offer a player only one signup bonus. Hence, a player receiving the $25 Tell-a-Friend bonus will not be eligible for the 20% signup bonus.
I'll be depositing more than 100 bucks so I'm going to go the 20% route. Thanks again for all the help.

1- Play on PokerStars 2- Rakes are lower with online poker compare with casino, no tips to dealer, no tax when you win an event, no travel fee. 3- Play mainly Hold-em NL (tournament , 1-2 tables satellites , heads-up ) 4- I have less money now than before 5- Why not, if you don't play your rent money.
If you start, avoid live game (you should avoid it in casino too) and stay with satellite.
Agree with Chicago, there is always a risk of cheating from these site and yes they have "no regulation" but they make so much money with the rake and tournament fee, it would be incredibly stupid for them to do so.
For me living in Montreal, I don't bother anymore going in casino. The nearest casino is Foxwoods (6 hour drive), have to go there at least 4 days, missing income for 2 working days. Those casino trips were costly. Now I stay home and can play whenever I want.

I gotta honestly say that there is a better overlay to a live game player than there is in those NL tourneys. The NL involves "completeness", which basically equates to one false move and you are done. Even when you move in on someone as an 80% favorite you lose one out of 5 times and receive a complete loss as opposed to that one in 5 times in a limit game that you lose leaving you 3 units to the good. I realize this is a gross oversimplification, but especially at low limits NL tourneys tend to be more of a crapshoot. You'll get more drawouts from jackasses in limit, but just smile and realize they are going to pay every time when you have the best of it.

Got my account activated on Tuesday and deposited $300(should be $360 when the bonus kicks in). So far I've played in 3 NL $10 tourneys and placed 2nd in 2 and 4th in the other. Not too bad considering I only once out drew someone when I was all in. I've also been playing at $1/$2 tables and have won about $30 there. I'm thinking of trying a $25 no limit table. I've heard that's were a lot of people make their money.

I really prefer the tourney tables. I feel like the extra layers of strategy involved helps give an edge. It's a whole different game. I'm so used to the tourneys that the regular 25$ table bothers me. You gotta play what your best at I guess. If the small tourneys increase your money too slowly, you can always move up to a higher buy-in.
You can win AND lose a lot of money fast on a regular NL table.
Also - I believe what Acid says above is true. Limit hold'em is the way to go for consistent winnings if you have a good understanding of hold'em. It just takes more patience (and it's not as much fun).

I prefer the no limit tables...tend to make more money there. .25/.50 blinds...$50 max buy in...can sit and play like a rock and just hit one or two big hands a night and make a good amount of money.
The tournaments are fun though...especially the multi-table variety. Can make some very good money if you can get to the final table.

I like low limit tables where the players are very tight. I'm definitely a more aggressive bettor so going to table where most people will fold if they didn't hit anything on the flop is to my advantage.
Anyone use in applications to track their stats or their opponents. I've heard pokertracker is a pretty good tool but I'm wondering if it is worth the 40 bucks.
