What are some songs that remind you of baseball? It doesn't even have to be baseball related. Here are three of mine: John Fogarty - Centerfield Don Henley - The Boys of Summer Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson |

That one you mentioned above, "Centerfield," that's the one where he goes, "Put me in coach--I'm ready to play." Right? That's one of the quintessential baseball songs.
That and "Take Me out to the Ballgame"

"Okay Blue Jays"
You've got a diamond You've got nine men You've got a hat and a bat And that's not all You've got the bleachers Got 'em from spring 'til fall You got a dog and a drink And the umpire's call Waddaya want? Let's play ball!
(Chorus) Okay (okay) Blue Jays (Blue Jays) Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!
Is that a fly ball Or is it a seagull Coming in from the lake Just to catch the game? It's the last inning Our guys are winning Dave's put down a smoker A strike And you've got no doubt (You're out!) Waddaya want? Let's play ball!
(Chorus)
It's a beautiful evenin', fans At the ballpark Warm summer breezes Sun's goin' down And it's all dark At the ballpark But that's okay...it's a night game Waddaya want? Let's play ball!
(Chorus)
Bring on the White Sox Bring on the BoSox Bring on the Brewers The Rangers and the Yankees too We'll beat the Indians We'll beat the Tigers We'll beat the A's so bad it'll make Billy blue Waddaya want? Let's play ball!
(Chorus)

Peter, Paul & Mary RIGHT FIELD lyrics
Saturday summers, when I was a kid We'd run to the schoolyard and here's what we did We'd pick out the captains and we'd choose up the teams It was always a measure of my self esteem Cuz the fastest, the strongest, played shortstop and first The last ones they picked were the worst I never needed to ask, it was sealed, I just took up my place in right field. Playing...
chorus: Right field, it's easy, you know. You can be awkward and you can be slow That's why I'm here in right field Just watching the dandelions grow
Playing right field can be lonely and dull Little Leagues never have lefties that pull I'd dream of the day they'd hit one my way They never did, but still I would pray That I'd make a fantastic catch on the run And not lose the ball in the sun And then I'd awake from this long reverie And pray that the ball never came out to me Here in...
(chorus)
Off in the distance, the game's dragging on, There's strikes on the batter, some runners are on. I don't know the inning, I've forgotten the score. The whole team is yelling and I don't know what for. Then suddenly everyone's looking at me My mind has been wandering; what could it be? They point at the sky and I look up above And a baseball falls into my glove!
Here in right field, it's important you know. You gotta know how to catch, you gotta know how to throw, That's why I'm here in right field, just watching the dandelions grow!

This town ain't big, this town ain't small It's a little of both they say Our ball club may be minor league but at least it's Triple-A
We sit below the Marlboro man, above the right field wall We do the wave all by ourself Hang ump, a blind man could've made that call
We like beer flat as can be We like our dogs with mustard and relish We got a great pitcher what's his name Well, we can't even spell it We don't worry about the pennant much We just like to see the boys hit it deep There's nothing like the view from the cheap seats
The game was close, we'll call it a win Go off to toast the boys again That local band is back in town They got a kinda minor league sound
They're not that bad, they're not that good But all in all it's understood We wanna dance, they wanna play We wouldn't have it any other way
We like beer flat as can be We like our dogs with mustard and relish We got a great pitcher what's his name Well, we can't even spell it We don't worry about the pennant much We just like to see the boys hit it deep There's nothing like the view from the cheap seats
Cheap seats
Now the majors called up, oh, what's his name And one more buildin' rises tall And suddenly we're all grown up And this old town's not quite so small But I'll always miss the middle size town In the middle of the middle-west With no name pitchers and local bands, And mustard and relish and all the rest
We like beer flat as can be We like our dogs with mustard and relish We got a great pitcher what's his name Well, we can't even spell it We don't worry about the pennant much We just like to see the boys hit it deep There's nothing like the view from the cheap seats

Joltin' Joe DiMaggio
by Ben Homer & Alan Courtney© Published: 1941 Performed by: Les Brown Sung by: Betty Bonney Hello Joe, whatta you know? We need a hit so here I go. Ball one (Yea!) Ball two (Yea!) Strike one (Booo!) Strike two (Kill that umpire!) A case of Wheaties
He started baseball's famous streak That's got us all aglow He's just a man and not a freak, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio.
Joe, Joe DiMaggio We want you on our side
He tied the mark at forty-four July the 1st you know Since then he's hit a good twelve more Joltin' Joe DiMaggio
Joe, Joe DiMaggio We want you on our side
From coast to coast that's all you'll hear Of Joe the one man show He's glorified the horsehide sphere Joltin' Joe DiMaggio
Joe, Joe DiMaggio We want you on our side
He'll live in baseball's Hall of Fame He got there blow by blow Our kids will tell their kids his name Joltin' Joe DiMaggio
We dream of Joey with the light brown plaque Joe, Joe DiMaggio We want you on our side
And now they speak in whispers low Of how they stopped our Joe One night in Cleveland Oh Oh Oh Goodbye streak DiMaggio

A great, but neglected, Bob Dylan tune:
Lazy stadium night Catfish on the mound. "Strike three," the umpire said, Batter have to go back and sit down.
Catfish, million-dollar-man, Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.
Used to work on Mr. Finley's farm But the old man wouldn't pay So he packed his glove and took his arm An' one day he just ran away.
Catfish, million-dollar-man, Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.
Come up where the Yankees are, Dress up in a pinstripe suit, Smoke a custom-made cigar, Wear an alligator boot.
Catfish, million-dollar-man, Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.
Carolina born and bred, Love to hunt the little quail. Got a hundred-acre spread, Got some huntin' dogs for sale.
Catfish, million-dollar-man, Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.
Reggie Jackson at the plate Seein' nothin' but the curve, Swing too early or too late Got to eat what Catfish serve.
Catfish, million-dollar-man, Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.
Even Billy Martin grins When the Fish is in the game. Every season twenty wins Gonna make the Hall of Fame.
Catfish, million-dollar-man, Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.

The Dire Straits Walk of Life always makes me think of baseball, and I have no idea why. This makes me show my age a bit, but I don't remember the video well enough to know if it had anything to do with baseball. I don't believe its ever been in a baseball movie. But for some reason, for as long as I can remimber, baseball is the only thing I can think of everytime that song comes on the radio. Weird stuff I tell you, wierd stuff...

Well this song has been incorporated with Dodgers games--after every game.
Hate New York City It's cold and it's damp And all the people dressed like monkeys Let's leave Chicago to the Eskimos That town's a little bit too rugged For you and me you bad girl
Rollin' down the Imperial Highway With a big nasty redhead at my side Santa Ana winds blowin' hot from the north And we as born to ride
Roll down the window put down the top Crank up the Beach Boys baby Don't let the music stop We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more
From the South Bay to the Valley From the West Side to the East Side Everybody's very happy 'Cause the sun is shining all the time Looks like another perfect day
I love L.A. (We love it) I love L.A. (We love it)
Look at that mountain Look at those trees Look at that bum over there, man He's down on his knees Look at these women There ain't nothin' like 'em nowhere
Century Boulevard (We love it) Victory Boulevard (We love it) Santa Monica Boulevard (We love it) Sixth Street (We love it, we love it)
I love L.A. I love L.A. (We love it)

Yeah, didn't they play that during the baseball game montage in "The Naked Gun"? That was hilarious, with Dreben busting out first a Dirt Devil handheld and then a regular upright vacuum cleaner to clean homeplate.
Reggie Jackson, zombielike: "I must kill... the Queen"
Great movie.

Theme Time Radio Hour with Your Host Bob Dylan - with a link to his playlists
Take a trip to the land of radio magic. With music hand-selected from his personal collection, Bob Dylan takes you to places only he can. Listen as Bob Dylan weaves his own brand of radio with themes, dreams and schemes. This Memorial Day Weekend relive The First Four Shows about the Weather, Mother's, Drinking, and Baseball.
A Dylan Fan's Blog
May 24, 2006 BASEBALL ...5:28 pm
Bob Dylan, who turned 65 today, had the fourth in his series of “Theme Time Radio Hours” broadcast on XM Satellite Radio this morning. How can you describe a show that had baseball-themed performances from a range of artists that included Sonny Rollins (“Newk’s Fadeaway”), Ry Cooder (“Third Base, Dodger Stadium”), Lawrence Ferlinghetti (“Baseball Canto”), and the original cast of the Broadway musical Damn Yankees (“Heart”)? As well as dynamite cuts from the likes of Mabel Scott (“Baseball Boogie”) and Sister Winona Carr (“Life is a Ballgame”)? And Dylan himself singing “Take Me Out To the Ballgame” acapella?
This one you just had to hear. And if nothing else, the range of takes on baseball that were squeezed into this hour amply demonstrated that the sport deserves the title of “America’s favorite past-time.”
Dylan also read an email from one “Jamie” in Las Vegas who said she liked to listen to baseball games on the radio late at night but her boyfriend complained that it was keeping him up. He advised:
Do what I used to do. When I was supposed to be asleep, I’d take the bed-side radio and slip it under my pillow. Press your ear close to the pillow — which is what you’re supposed to do with pillows anyway — and listen to the second game of the double-header, without botherin’ anyone else in the house. Millions upon millions used to the same thing, back when radio was king. And I hope you still do that with “Theme Time Radio Hour,” your private pillow pal.
That’s the kind of listener Dylan has in his head when he’s putting together these shows, obviously. A solitary soul tuning in through the darkness. He’s going for intimacy, mystery and a little naughtiness, and generally hitting the spot in a highly entertaining manner. The most jarring elements remain the guest spots — we heard Charlie Sheen today; it was Jimmy Kimmel last week — who seem never to fail in bringing things back to the mundane, at least for the minute or so that they use to pass along a dull anecdote or opine about something. It’s odd indeed to hear these inserted pieces of ordinariness, and then quickly to be brought back to the patter being provided by Dylan — who by comparison appears to be broadcasting from the planet Neptune. Well, maybe those spots serve a purpose in that way; they’re too short to be really bothersome, but they remind you that the rest of the show is something that is quite unordinary.

For Yankee fans who get out to the stadium, two songs that surely remind them of baseball are The Village People's YMCA and the hillbilly/techno fusion arrangement, "Cotton Eyed Joe".
For those who haven't been or aren't familiar, YMCA is played during the middle of the 5th inning when the grounds crew comes out to rake the infield. In the middle of the song, the crew members all drop their rakes and do the famous "YMCA dance".
I have no explanation for why "Cotton Eyed Joe" is played during the 7th inning stretch after "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". It is accompanied by what they claim is a live shot of someone in the stadium control room on the diamond vision screen, wearing a straw hat and dancing emphatically to the song.
