KC throws a little bit of a curve by taking Luke Hochevar. Rockies, who had seemed to be focused on Miller or Longoria throw a splitter in the dirt by taking the polished (but not as high-ceilinged) Reynolds. Then Tampa, who should be drooling over getting polished guys like Miller or Lincoln, go for a guy with a Sean Burroughs/Joe Randa type ceiling in Longoria. Weird!

Giants get a gem at #1 in Linecum. Yanks take USC righty Kennedy (too high, IMO) while the Phillies roll the dice on the "off field issue-ridden" Kyle Drabek - yes, Doug Drabek's kid.

Tigers get another nice piece to add to their future starting rotation...

IF they manage to keep all those kids together, it could get nasty!

Dodgers take Preston Mattingly with the first pick of the sandwich picks! Cool!

Yanks make up for a faux pas (IMO) by getting Huskers RHP Joba Chamberlain in the sandwich round.

Agreed on the Tigers - sweet pick getting Miller at #6.

Its one thing when your old heros start to take coaching and managing jobs. You really start to feel old when their kids get drafted and signed.

Kids of former Yankees currently in baseball:

Prince Fielder
Daryl Ward
Lance Neikro
Steven Tolleson
Preston Mattingly
Kyle Drabek

I'm sure there are plenty more. I wonder which team has the most.

Personally, I'm not thrilled with my Braves' decision to take Cody Johnson at #24. Especially when Conger was still available. I thought we could get Johnson at #38, and Rasmus at #43. Look for Fontaine to be converted to 2B - with the SS depth the organization currently has, I don't see him making a splash unless he moves.

Imagine - McCann, Salty, and Conger as your Catchers...*AMN!!!

The Dodgers' first round picks of Kershaw and Morris are excellent. Mattingly in the supplemental round is awful. Huge overdraft. I do love landing Kershaw and Morris, though. Two quality pitchers that will help keep the Dodgers system stocked with arms.

Big surprise, eh???

Braves first 13 selections...

10 Pitchers
5 Left-handed Pitchers
5 High School Pitchers

Guess no one in the system gives a *hit what the "Moneyballers" say. The lack of a Catcher selection at this point leads me to believe they may be in the lead for Tony Pena's kid.

The Dodgers' Scouting Director Logan White's drafting philosophy would also make many hardcore Moneyballers' skin crawl, but his drafts have rebuilt a once barren Dodger farm.

Re: Mattingly, my uneducated guess is that he was a guy they decided they really wanted, and they didn't know for sure if he'd last until their 3rd round pick (having no 2nd rounder), so they felt they had to take him that early to ensure they got him. I don't normally follow baseball drafts much, but my impression is that there isn't typically much "trading down" down as much as there might be in the NFL draft.

On MLB.com just before the draft started they were speculating the Dodgers might even take their #26 pick (Morris) at the #7 slot on similar logic (i.e., they were "set" on him but weren't sure if he'd last to the #26 slot). Glad it didn't pan out that way and they were able to land Kershaw as well with the #7 pick. They got enough value with those two for me to overlook the Mattingly stretch IMHO.

clv - between Salty and a young McCann, how much of a catching pipeline do you need? Sheesh!

That's just it. Salty will never play at Turner Field as a Catcher. Even though he's not hitting right now, he's still the top Catcher prospect in the game. As of now, the organization still hasn't handed him a Claw or an OF glove, so it sure looks like the Marte situation - his highest value to other organizations is at his present position, and we need help in plenty of other places, making him our present best trading chip. My gut feeling is that he's not going to wind up with the big club - there's a pretty credible rumor floating in the "inner circles" that say we're on the verge of trading for another "ace", and that it's a matter of when and not if...my assumption is that Salty would have to be included to pull off any deal of that magnitude. If that's the case, having Conger to slide right in in his place would have been a great thing IMO.

McCann will be THE Catcher in the ATL for the forseeable future (barring injury, of course), so if you could delay the "next Catcher of the future's" arrival by a year or two it would certainly help simplify things. When Salty's "ready", what do we do with him? The writing's already on the wall since he's not learning another position at this point.

Not true. Joel Guzman, who scouts insisted would outgrow the SS position, played every year of his minor league career there before finally getting moved to OF this year, the year he was just months away from hitting the Majors. I'm not sure Miguel Cabrera played a day of LF in the minors before getting called up as one a few years back. If Salty's glove is as suspect as I've heard it is, he's a prime candidate to get moved, especially considering the fact that his bat can carry him at other positions.

That's just it - his glove isn't nearly as "suspect" as it was in the past. All reports I've been able to find say that his defense has measurably improved across the board. The reason I wanted Conger so desperately is that there's nothing to be particularly excited about behind Salty - Max Ramirez has spent some time behind the plate (and has a good bat), but projects as a 3B or OF. Other than that, there aren't any true hitting Catchers...don't get me wrong, the guys in the system will be capable, they will just be more Todd Pratt-like than McCann/Salty-like.

HAHA. Marrow injured his throwing elbow while picking up the phone to hear that he had been drafted #5 overall. That is hilarious...kinda sad but hilarious.

I have seen or heard nothing to confirm that Morrow hurt his elbow. That is nothing but a bit of satire from a local writer about the sad state of Mariner drafting/pitching.

(Hopefully it's satire)

As for the earlier question about Salty's improved Defense...

(From Chris Kline in today's Baseball America Daily Dish)

Still, defense remains his top priority, and the challenges have been coming fast and furious in the Southern League this season. Among catchers in the league, Saltalamacchia is one of the most tested, with 56 stolen base attempts against him. Only Tennessee's Miguel Montero has been tested more (with 57 attempts), but to his credit, Saltalamacchia has been holding his own, throwing out 32 percent of runners this season.

That number is up from the 26 percent he threw out last year for the Pelicans, and is just one of the areas in which he's improved.

"He's doing everything a little bit better than where he was last year," the scout said. "Squaring up balls to the center of the diamond, doing a better job at calling pitches, and really reading runners to shut the running game down. He's just a more complete catcher than what I saw last year."

And that's exactly where Saltalamacchia wants to be--not just an offensive force, but a more well-rounded player who values the defensive aspect of his craft.

"I worked really hard on a lot of things this offseason, and I think I've made some improvements," he said. "I could be a little better, but I feel like my pitch-calling has come a long way from last year especially. That's huge for me--if you can call a game and have consistent success, that's already something that wasn't in my book last year. I feel good about where I'm at overall defensively, but I'm never happy. I always can do things to get better."

It's fun watching the Braves fans turn their hopes to the minors. When their "future all-star" is batting around the Mendoza line, they bring up his "improving defense". You guys had an amazing run, time for some mediocrity.

Morrow's elbow is just fine, M's still should have taken local-boy-done-good Tim Linecum.

Agree. Not taking Timmy was stupid.

Afraid that's simply "sour grapes". Mediocrity? Did you happen to notice the number of kids who moved to the big club last season? What's that? Baseball America STILL ranked our system at #6 even after that?

We'll see.

#27 I don't normally follow baseball drafts much, but my impression is that there isn't typically much "trading down" down as much as there might be in the NFL draft.

In MLB...teams are not allowed to trade draft choices. Team loose draft choices by signing top rated players (rated on previous season's performance..ie Garciapara cost LAD zippo, Milwood cost Rangers a #2 pick). For losing a rated player, teams receive the forfeited pick (A rated picks) AND/or a sandwich round pick based on lost player's rating. See below link for details.

And it is that teams that sign an A player that have a top 15 pick lose their 2nd rounder and not 1st rounder.

Random thoughts about the MLB draft related to signing/losing "A" players. Probably doesn't include

The baseball draft seems to have more impact (ML ready) players than 10 years ago. More than a few draftees from the college ranks are less than 12 months from getting a shot at the bigs. Thus the impact of signing another teams "A" rated player has significant detriment (loss of 1st round pick) to organizations finishing in the upper tier record wise. And getting two early picks, sandwich pick before 2nd and either the 1st or 2nd of the signing team makes the loss of a quality player palatable.

Of course the hook is...must offer arbitration to get the compensatory picks. That scenario let the Detroit sign Rogers w/o loss of picks because Rangers didn't (wouldn't) offer arbitration, however Millwood cost Texas it's second round pick because Cleveland did.
