Subject: RIBC 2007: Regular Season Discussion #1

We'll use this thread for RIBC discussion during the regular season.
I'm working on the usual standings page, which should be available sometime tomorrow.
Please don't change your team name once the season starts. The RIBC standings program will calculate standings over any range of dates, but requires that all team names remain constant. If you want to rename your team, do it now. |

What about berkman or some closers for Webb. I'm on vacation until Friday or so. But can check internet on occasion.

Offer out to you, the gurupie formerly known as Treasonists. Although I think what I have matches up with Trip better, but let's see what you think.

Peter N., on it's surface, I don't see much problem with it. Tosh is clearly trading for Ws and is willing to pay for them. Filthy RIBC gets Ks, which he's in need of and Tosh has a surplus of.
When you consider that the 4 W difference in the 2 pitchers would (to this point in the season) give Tosh an extra 2.5 points, it seems worth adding in Fields for him.
Seems fine to me.

I personally think Shields isn't far behind Halladay fantasy wise. He will provide me with some helpful K's even if he bombs. Looking at projected opponents for both pitchers, I think that Shields will even help me in WHIP for the rest of the season compared to Halladay. He's managed to do better than Halladay so far, pitching in the same division.
To make up for the fact that Halladay has the stuff to dominate down the stretch, I get a third baseman in the deal as well. Even better, one with a starting job. The best third baseman I've had all season has been Maicer Izturis, and that won't last with Kendrick coming back. There is really nothing of value in the free agent pool at third either. I can only put up with Andy Phillips for so long. Fields is a player I targeted because of his position in a potentially dangerous lineup. He has been seeing pitches batting before Thome and Konerko and I think that will last. His numbers in the minors were good and hopefully he is just starting to get comfortable.

Moves like that can define a season. I had the same first reaction when I saw the trade, but a quick look made it very easy to see why it happened. Personally, I don't have as much faith in either Shields or Fields (was that on purpose? rhyming names?) but I can certainly understand it. I'd have give you Melvin Mora if you'd asked.
Email sent back, Trip. We have to be close on this.
If anyone else wants an outfielder or closer or starting pitcher, let me know.

Much like Seattle Mariner management, I often have a hard time benching a regular player for someone playing better. Thusly ... Adrian Beltre continued to start at 3B for me, while Josh Fields mostly sat on my bench (but has been playing some DH during his recent hot streak). I feel good about sending the kid somewhere with a chance to play.
I am certainly trying to get more 'W's with Halladay, and maybe Filthy will be wrong, and I'll get better WHIP as well.
Not to mention my fans were clamoring for a change since we can't seem to catch StLCards. At the very least, I should sell a few more tickets.

I'm not gonna lie, rhyming names wasn't on purpose but did get noticed. Also, I've had Mora and definitely didn't want him back. Outside of the top tier of 3rd basemen, Fields is one of the most appealing to me.
Halladay is gonna be on the road against some tough teams down the stretch. If anyone can shut them down it is him, but the Jays need to start hitting and Doc has to start pitching better on the road for that to happen. Noone wants that to happen more than me, but if its on someone elses team at the expense of getting a starting 3rd baseman and still keeping a pretty talented bunch of starters, I will take my chances.

Who ever has Corey Patterson and now Aubrey Huff would probably also thank me for waiting just before they figured it out to release them. God I hate the Orioles. Probably gonna be the ones to kill the Jays slim playoff hopes this year too. For now, I'm scared to drop Hernandez cause he'd probably go off, but starting next year the Orioles are blacklisted...meaning they'll probably become the best offense in the league.

My team has kicked into gear for the stretch drive. Really hoping to at least qualify for RIBC next season. Gained 24.5 points since June 25 (which was about the same time I finally dropped Garciaparra - not a coincidence). Dropping Giles didn't hurt any either. Drafting those two did hurt immensely.

Still looking to move Brandon Webb, Cole Hamels, Manny Corpas, Orlando Hernandez, Vernon Wells, Willy Taveras, Luis Gonzalez, or Melvin Mora.
Looking for a power-hitters. Serious power hitters at all positions. No flashes in the pan.

Well if like most of us you're bored by Blue Hen's bantering lets talk about somehting more prevalent, like RIBC rules.
How many teams in the majors stay in the majors? Go to AAA? Go to AA?
How many teams in AA and AAA move up and so on?

Nothing set in stone. However, the following guidelines should probably hold:
Highly likely to get an invite to RIBC: Top 5 RIBC teams Top 3 in each AAA league (6) Winner of each AA league (2)
This list comprises 13 teams. Assuming I'm not in the top 5 of the RIBC (unlikely at this point), that leaves only 2 openings, which would be selected from the following 4 candidates:
Teams finishing 6-7 in RIBC Teams finishing 4th in each AAA
Final determination will consider factors such as closeness of standings in each league, feedback from Commissioners as to any behavioral concerns, and manager attrition.
This year, we ended up with 7 returning teams from the prior season's RIBC (incl. me), plus 3 from each AAA, plus 3 AA winners.

I would be willing to trade one of my closers (F. Cordero, Accardo, Issringhausen).
I seek a hitter (not looking for a catcher) that will improve my SLG% (currently at .449), but won't lose me my valuable 2 points in OBP.

I have interest in trading for a starting pitcher. Prefer a one for one deal where I give up Glaus(SS,3B eligibility) for somebody, although I am open to other ideas as well. Doesn't have to be a stud, just someone that will help with K's, ERA, whip.

I see it, Holt. Definitely not a flash in the pan, but I think you're going to need a little more than that. He doesn't have enough power, and doesn't help me out at my weak positions.
I am also headed down a few other avenues. If you can add a little more to that deal, we might make it work.

Alright, I guess J.J. Hardy isn't a serious slugger, but he does have 23 home runs and has picked up the pace in August.
Manny Corpas is pretty great, but I think he's bound to give some of it back, especially since he pitches home games in Colorado. Hardy fills a need, and I think it's worth it at this point.
I wonder if he'd have taken Bob Wickman for Hardy...

My trade on August 16 has not worked out as planned for me. The stats are -
Roy Halladay - 5 starts, 42.2 IP, 0-2 record, 24 Ks, 3.59 ERA, 1.34 WHIP
James Shields - 5 starts, 36.1 IP, 3-0 record, 31 Ks, 2.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP
If I had kept Shields, I would have an extra 3.5 points in the wins and Ks categories, and perhaps 1-2 more in the %s. And with those points, I would not feel so danged crowded from SANFORDERS right now. Stop pushing your way through the line Dave! You're harshing my mellow. :-)

In general I really like Yahoo, but now that football has started it seems they aren't paying ANY attention to baseball. There are quite a few sept callups that are getting playing time but still haven't been added to the database.
As big as yahoo is, you'd think that someone on their payroll would have the responsibility of doing this. They suck at it?

Ditto that, Cards. It's been fun having you and Dave R in both RIBC and TSN. Looks like you guys got me in here, but I think I'm in good shape in TSN. Dave R does have a lot of pitcher trades and knows what to do with them.
I wish you could sort TSN by month, or half-season. I bet Dave R has the #1 WWR since the ASB.

Here were my prop bets: DBacks over 79 Brewers over 82 White Sox under 87 Indians over 85 Tigers under 88 Angels under 90 Yankees under 97

congrats StLCards and to everyone who qualified to try again next year.
I tried everything I could to at least get back to 6th place. Just couldn't put together the starting pitching to get it done, though I think I got reasonably close considering how far behind I was early-mid June.
Keeping dogs like Garciaparra and Giles around too long sure didn't help either. I really felt I had a powerhouse lineup after the AS break but the competition was too fierce, and the hole I dug was too deep.
As always, thanks to Guru for running this great league.
