Lots of pitchers out there tonight. I am thinking of skipping Santana vs a Det team that seems to really be hitting the ball, but I fear I am overthinking, A TON. Peavy looks great, but eventually that ERA will jump toward 3.

      Fri, May 11, 2007, 09:55 		Ran these again. Simplifies it to only show the difference or pts behind the leader. Added 7.25 per hitter game under the pace, subtracted 7.25 for every hitter game over the pace. Added 4.8 pts for every inning under the pace, subtraced 4.8 pts for every IP over the pace.

Once agin, I am asking for feedback on the methodology.

My assumption is that the difference in innings will be largely SP IP and that is why I use the low number.

      Fri, May 11, 2007, 10:23 		And back to my same old dilemma. As I watch Chase Utley lose money, I know people are selling due to his matchup with Hill, who he has good numbers against. Obviously Hill is a quite different pitcher than last year.

Nonethless, am I better off just using Utley for evedry game at 2B left and taking his average, or by playing matchup? That seesm to be the big dilemma in this game. As Guru pointed out, had I just left Reyes in at SS so far, I would be getting 11 pt/game not the 8.5 I am getting. hmmm.

Thanks again for the numbers. I agree with using 4.5 pts/inning for pitching. It is all SP (at least for me) and that is slightly above what I've been averaging (sadly).

I've generally been playing matchups. I haven't looked at the numbers, but if Utley has had success against Hill over the course of 2 or 3 games, it might be worth going with him. For my money, I'm going with Durham in Colorado. He's been pretty good there in his career and (for now) is healthy.

I'm also rolling the dice on Peavy. Pujols has hit him pretty hard over the years, but the Cards seem to still be scuffling and hopefully it will last at least 1 more game. Sabathia hasn't had a ton of success in Oakland over his career. Santana had a great game and its about time to buy him and hold him (or at least make sure he starts every game). I figure I'll hold out one more start since Detroit has been pretty hot lately.

      Fri, May 11, 2007, 10:56 		As a memeber of the "not currently in the Top 100" I'll add the caveat that there are teams who would leap up. If I applied the 4.8 RHP/IP it would put me around 21st. My current rank is 115. I'm sure there are teams better positioned than mine.

Ryan Doumit has single handedly turned things around for me at catcher. Todd Helton at 1B has been huge, and Reyes. Everyone else I pick...SUCKS!

My April hitting was an embarassing 4.21 PPG
My May hitting...3.88!!!! WTF?

2B - Kinsler has been negative 3 of the 4 times I used him. Kelly Johnson cooled off. And I only used Utley once. Gotta just go with him and leave him there I think.

3B - I went away from ARod for a bit, Cabrera got me a total of -1.47 in his 4 tries. David Wright got me a -5.9 in his one game. ARod stays. Done

OF - Berkman has been huge for me the last 3 days, but other than that, I never get big games from my OF. I'm plugging in Vlad for his Texas series this weekend, that should be 10 per game. Berkman, Bonds & Vlad will be my weekend OF, its nice to finally be able to afford these guys. No more Trot Nixon!

Now, on the other hand, my pitching has been awesome. 11.78 per inning (6.22 from 3 SPs - Haren, Hudson, Maine, 16.40 from 21 relievers)

I'm far from a statistician, but you asked for methodology feedback, so here it is. Overall I feel you have compiled a very fair set of adjusted standings using a methodology that adjust IP's equally. You properly assume that for teams that are AHEAD of IP pace, they have done so on the backs of SP's so you assign a pts/IP equal to a reasonable return for starters. Conversely you properly assume that anyone significantly under in IP must 'catch up' to pace on the backs of SP's.

My theory would be that the adjusted pts/ip would act a little bit like a bell curve the closer you get to "pace". Follow me here.

- Imagine a bell curve
- The horizontal axis is based upon +/- innings pitched, with the top of the bell curve being exactly AT PACE on IP's, or at zero
- The vertical axis is pts/ip
- The closer you are to 'pace', the higher your adjusted pts/ip should be
- Conversely, the farther you are from pace, the lower your adjusted pts/ip should be because you either sprinted ahead in IP via starters or you'll have to use SP's to close the gap to IP pace.

Also, let's face it, your 4.8 pts/IP number for starters I guarantee is significantly better than just about anyone in the game who has +100 (or higher) in IP. Anyone +125, +200 or higher sure as hell was NOT as picky as you were with SP's, so IMO those guys are probably lucky to be at 3.5.

The wild card are the teams -50 or more under pace. How good can they be with those SP's? Especially with Myers at SP, how many Myers or Papelbon saves do those teams have to miss out on trying to catch up in IP pace??

Anyway, I would submit that, for my team for example, 4.8 is way too low because at this point I have no concerns about keeping up pace using my existing pitching strategy. Thus, my 7.6 pts/ip pace overall shouldn't be materially altered merely based upon having to use more SP's to make up pace. Ok sure it could tank just based upon poor performance, but for projection's sake if I was doing these numbers I would not adjust my projected pts/ip based upon having to reach for excess starts.

Of course, the closer you are to pace, the less overall effect it has on the projection. So, for my -19 pace, if I were to be credited with my 7.6 pts/ip I would have a whopping 53.2 additional points.

Okay.....all of that is a bit much for just a projection. No, I don't think it's so critically necessary - but you asked!! ;-)

Had some errors in my April #s.

Points / IP for SP = 5.77
Points / IP for RP = 14.22
Points / IP Total = 7.95

Points / GP = 5.65

Now, May is still early, but ugly so far

Points / IP for SP = 5.02 - No thanks to Halliday
Points / IP for RP = 15.58
Points / IP Total = 9.45

Points / GP = 4.73

Global rank is 120 with a net position usage of 0/-33

So, I still am not willing to believe I am out of this thing.
And still am in great shape if and when I were to decide to go after a monthly prize.

TV is still hurting me, but right now I'm at $639.93

As I keep saying, only time will tell.

      Fri, May 11, 2007, 13:09 		I wish I could always pick my hitters like I did this past Tuesday. 7 HR between my 9 players (V-Mart, Morneau x2, A-Rod, Bonds, Sheff, Griffey). Reyes still had a good game without the homer, only Weeks and Ortiz disappointed. 152 points from 9 hitters that day.

So of course, I got a cold slap in the face the next day with 15.64 hitter points from 9 hitters (about 1/9 the production and less total points then 5 of my hitters had scored individually the day before).

To sum up - (1) I'm slightly bored right now and (2) don't get down just because you have 1 bad game ... or a bad month. I'm in an NL-only keeper league where I kept Howard, Utley and Berkman (as well as Hamels and Fielder). I picked up Edwin Encarnacion as my 3b. My "aces" are Zambrano and Olsen. Suffice to say, I was in last at the end of April! I'm trying not to panic...

This gives me better avgs than I see when I make daily changes.

I generally set up my pitchers for the week, and then make RP changes based on # of days in a row they have pitched.

Of course, that sure didn't work well with Cordero.

Starting to work down through each position now and sort out what I want to do.

Not quite as simple because of my TV.
Working on Catcher, and end up with 3 thoughts for now.

Pay for VMart and hang on.
Buy R. Hernandez, but he only plays 3 of 4.
Buy Doumit, but then have to deal with his off days.

Species, the reason I use such a low number, is that I attempted to normalize for RP. IE, I tried to assume that we are all playing as many RP as possible, which equal about 325 innings. Thus, the high RHP/IN for RP should not be figured into the remianing innings average. I may be +69 right now, but that will not decrease my amount of RP innings. Thus, the difference between you and me is largely SP innings only, in the long run. Does that make sense.

I also see the idea of the bell curve, however, I would place the middle at being under 150 to over 150 innings and they would all be close. It is easy to burn though innings only using quality guys.

Umm, Cliff...they have these off shore accounts where you can wager "fake" money (wink wink); maybe you should look into it with those SP numbers :) Wow!

I figure either I'll make a few hundred along the way or do well enough to crack the top 10.

Knowing my luck I'll find a way to lose money on the pitcher bets and still not crack the top 10.

I have never had a good day from my 1B and tend to chase for gains...obviously not very well.

      Fri, May 11, 2007, 21:09 		I went out to dinner with my wife and left my 13 year old in charge of selling Vlad, Maggs, and Todd Jones. He did it all right, but a few minutes early. At least I didn't lose any money.

I replaced them with Griffey, Sizemore, and Sabathia. He better hope they outscore the other 3...

Got out of and back into Bonds in a matter of minutes. I've already made a couple bucks on that transaction. Can anyone confirm whether he is sold out or not?

Right now I'm still debating on Peavy or not. Pretty gun shy after Halladay, but you got to start somebody sometime I suppose. Doesn't look like my closers are going to get any opps either.

      Fri, May 11, 2007, 22:17 		I was aorund for the 7:00 freezes bu just got back. Lost my butt on Peavy. At least I've made almost $30 on Bonds. I still can't make money. Bonds was trying to help but selling at the freeze is a requirement in order not to lose money. The heck with trying to make anything.

I finally pick a SP who does well with Peavy last night...and my rank doesn't even change. That's how bad my hitting is. Have also had Saito in my lineup almost every day this year but somehow he wasn't in there last night and missed his save. That's what happens when you sell off some of your players, you forget to get them all back! I hate selling players at the freeze.

Bonds was up like $32 overall for me last night but has dropped a little today, so I assume he's not sold out anymore.

I picked up in roto yesterday as well and had him in the lineup today. I'll ride him out and see what happens.

Maybe he's finally found his stroke at the ML level and will finally stick.

      Sun, May 13, 2007, 09:19 		Im in Germany on business for a week and decided to stick with stud hitters, closers in every position and hope for the best. It is wack trying to buy and sell players... open is at 4:00 pm with freeze as late as 4:00 am the next morning.
My profit making will have to wait and hope one of my studs does'nt go on the DL.
Glad I've got the MLB package at least I may be able to catch a game or two on the laptop.
