0 Subject: Curt Schilling - The Weakest Link

Suddenly Jeremy Guthrie looks a hell of a lot more appealing than Curt Schilling on one of my Yahoo leagues. Schilling gets a shelling seemingly all the time this season.

This is basically the classic fantasy problem when an ace who is past his prime becomes a liability... But he's CURT SCHILLING!

Have any of you drafted him? And have you dropped him already? Or are you having the same problem as I am?

Yea, he's not going to pitch like he did in his prime, but it's also not like he's been that awful either. I would feel more comforatable with him over the rest of the season than say a pitcher who has been hot lately but still has a decent chance to fizzle as soon you pick him up.

Simply, he is still not in great shape and sometimes he doesnt have his fastball. Last night he tried to get by with 88 and a bunch of junk. Didnt happen.

I was sitting right behind home plate last night and he looked awful. I don't even remember seeing a pitch over 85. I think he's the type that can still be dominating, but somethings gotta be wrong with him right now. Didn't he almost have a no hitter a couple weeks ago?

And since when can Tyler Yates hit 98MPH? Maybe the stadium radar gun was messed up last night?

He did really stink it up, and the days are probably gone when he could just throw heat all day long. But c'mon guys--less than 2 weeks ago he almost had a no hitter.

Schill to have MRI
By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling left the team and went back to Boston today to meet with Red Sox team doctor Thomas Gill and have a precautionary MRI on his shoulder.

According to multiple reports, the Sox will be looking at his right (pitching) shoulder.

(Editor's note -- NESN's Tom Caron provided the following additional information in his blog:)

A Red Sox official told us there were concerns over the lack of velocity in Schilling's performance last night. According to the NESN radar gun, Schilling never hit 90 mph over his 81 pitches last night.

The Red Sox confirmed that he would be undergoing a precautionary MRI and there was no word yet on whether or not he would miss his next start, scheduled for Sunday against Jake Peavy and the San Diego Padres.

Sounds similar to what is going on with Schmidt. I'm thinking Schmidt may not pitch again this year, so BoSox fans better keep their fingers crossed.

I already dropped Schmidt on another team. Of the 20 different pitchers I have on my 4 teams, about 8 of them have already gone on DL, and a couple are already out for season.

So unlucky. If Schilling gets a surgery, it might actually benefit me (by letting me pick up some one better) and release me from my conundrum.

Doctors checking Schilling
MRI results normal; more tests due today
By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | June 20, 2007

ATLANTA -- An MRI taken on Curt Schilling's right shoulder in Boston was normal yesterday, the day after Schilling endured perhaps his worst start of the season against the Braves at Turner Field.

Schilling did not have pain in his shoulder, according to a club source, supporting manager Terry Francona's contention that Schilling did not complain of pain after giving up six runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings Monday night, looking so out of sorts that Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones wondered after the game whether the righthander was hurt.

Schilling, who returned to Boston yesterday and was examined by team medical director Thomas Gill, was expected to undergo more tests today. Although the team source said shutting Schilling down is expected to be one option discussed, that may mean missing no more than one start. Schilling is scheduled to start Sunday afternoon in San Diego against Padres ace Jake Peavy.

The only information Francona divulged after last night's game was that Schilling would spend the next two days working with rehabilitation coordinator Scott Waugh, then would be reevaluated Friday.

Shoulder slows Schill: Source: MRI shows no damage

ATLANTA - Curt Schilling’s exit out of town wasn’t good news for the Red Sox.

After suffering through one of the most ineffective starts of his career, Schilling was sent back to Boston yesterday to undergo tests on his right pitching shoulder, including an MRI.

According to a source last night, the MRI showed no structural damage.

... Schilling’s performances have gotten progressively worse since he came one out away from a no-hitter in Oakland on June 7. After throwing 100 pitches against the A’s, his next start against Colorado resulted in six runs in five innings. And then came the struggle against the Braves.

Although it might not ultimately be relevant in Schilling’s case, there has been precedent in regards to no-hitter-caliber games taking a toll on aging starting pitchers. For example, before a then-36-year-old David Cone threw a perfect game for the Yankees on July 18, 1999, he had a 2.86 ERA in 17 starts. After the history-making appearance, Cone notched a 4.93 ERA through his final 12 starts.

Cone never rediscovered his effectiveness during the remaining three seasons of his career, posting a 6.91 ERA with New York the following year before finishing his last full season in the majors with a mediocre campaign for the Red Sox.

For now, Schilling’s checkup is being treated as cautionary.

Schilling to DL
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

ATLANTA -- The Red Sox announced this afternoon that Curt Schilling will be put on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder soreness, and that Josh Beckett will move up in the rotation to pitch Sunday (he'll have his normal rest).

Schilling, who had an MRI on his pitching shoulder yesterday that turned up normal, said this morning in a radio interview on WEEI that he received a cortisone shot yesterday. He also said he thought "a little touch of tendinitis" was contributing to his problems.

"We got injected yesterday and there's a period of time here we have to let it sink in, cool down, and then we go," Schilling said. "I'm not exactly sure what day that is. I haven't heard from the doctors yet but I'm guessing it's Friday or Saturday. And then we go from there."

Julian Tavarez will pitch Monday in Seattle. A TBA in the rotation would come up Tuesday in Seattle. That happens to be Jon Lester's day to pitch as well.
