0 Subject: Fantasy Sports Live

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Tue, Jun 26, 2007, 17:17

I was referred to this site - www.fantasysportslive.com a couple days ago, and I think it offers an interesting (and potentiallly profitable) opportunity for Gurupies. The site is quite new (launched last week, I believe). It offers a range of daily contests (all baseball, currently, but other sports will follow soon). Each contest has limited entrants (typically 2-10), and involves selecting a limited fantasy baseball lineup subject to specified restrictions (salary cap, game time, etc.). Entry fees are modest, and prizes are awarded to the top finishers in each contest, as posted. You can participate in multiple contests on any day, or skip a day if you are busy or disinclined - so the schedule is ideal for those who like to play fantasy sports, but often feel restricted by the need to balance the time commitment of an ongoing game with "real life".

Click on the icon or the site link to check it out. If you decide to open an account, insert rotoguru in the bonus code field for an improved initial instant bonus deposit (subject to terms posted at the site). This will also identify you as a RotoGuru affiliate, which allows RotoGuru.com to benefit from the referral.

I signed up yesterday, entered one contest last night, and won a few bucks. The process was very simple and intuitive. As each contest is filled, new ones open up, so I don't believe there are any effective limits on the number of available contests of each type.

As a new venture, I'm sure there will be bugs (I found a minor one this morning that was quickly resolved), but the concept is appealing and infrastructure seems to work well. The business model seems to be financially viable and sustainable (given sufficient participants).

Feel free to use this thread to post questions, comments, ideas, etc. And if you register using the rotoguru bonus code, thanks!

My affiliate bonus is dependent on your participation in contests. (Doesn't matter whether you win or lose, though.)

Signing up and then being inactive has no impact.

Just signed up, though probably won't be active until after the Allstar break. "Rotoguru" was already filled in at the blank you mentioned, so it was easy to do the referral. Seems like they are trying their best to work with you. :)

sounds like fun. I plan to join.

on their site they mention a $10 instant deposit bonus for a $100 deposit. But Ender referred to a $30 instant bonus. how does one get that amount when registering/depositing ?

I think you still have to make a deposit to get the "free" bonus. A $50 deposit gets you a $10 bonus, a $100 deposit gets you a $20 bonus, and a $200 deposit gets you a $30 bonus. It's "free" in the sense that you can essentially play with your bonus money, and then withdraw your initial deposit if you wish.

At least, that's my understanding.

I figured it was something like that, but it's hard to find that expressly written IMO. I did take the time to read the rules and the FAQ, but missed that distinction. The only thing I didn't get too was the Flash walk through. Perhaps it's in there, or perhaps I simply missed it.

I am a bit disappointed that I haven't heard anything back from customer service even if it was only a polite "It's in the Rules."

Not sure if it's explicitly in the rules (because I think the bonus is lower if you don't have a referral bonus code). But, on the registration page, if you enter a dollar value in the deposit field, it immediately updates (and displays) the value of the related bonus.

It could be clearer, of course.

Ender - did the instant bonus ever show up in your account ? If so, how much did you deposit, and how much bonus did you get.

Guru - you stated in post 12 that a $50 deposit gets a $10 bonus, but I read in their rules that it took a $100 deposit got a $10 bonus. Is the lower deposit amount of $50 for the $10 bonus because of using Rotoguru as the bonus code ?

Basically I want to get the biggest bonus ($30) I can to start out, so I'm trying to figure out how much I need to deposit to get that. There seems to be some confusion about that still.

I can email their customer service about it, but with Ender not hearing back from them yet, I'm not that confident in getting an answer.

Ha!

VMart was removed for a pinch runner and didn't score a run.

Mags struck out in his last at-bat.

Ted Lilly had 1 more out to get before his night was done and he gave up a Hr.

In order, -1, -1, -2 (+1 after he got the last out).

All significant because I was 1 point behind first place in our $10 contest.

The higher bonus is because of the rotoguru bonus code.

I believe a $200 deposit is the minimum needed for the $30 bonus. You can simply try entering different amounts in the deposit field as see how the bonus is impacted - since it updates the displayed value immediately.

"Typically 90% minimum is paid back".

That was on their FSL blog, but it's not really true. Except for the heads up & $1 entry games (and the games that don't fill up), their typical payout is actually 80% - 85%. It still looks like fun, and I plan on giving it a try. I just don't think they should start out a new venture with claims that are not accurate.

Seems like a great concept. As I don't pariticipate in baseball but do play a number of basketball games, I was wondering if the rotoguru offer is a one-time short-term thing or will they still offer or re-offer the bonus when hoops starts ups?

It will most likely be an on going bonus. Thats how most sites like this work. Its based on a Poker Site;s concept and I think is very sustainable. I was the guy that let Guru know about this.

donk[26] - they may still be accurate since contests are held even if not full. While a full contest might only pay out 80-85%, the average contest might actually be close to 90%. I'm not sure how many contests end up at less than capacity, of course.

Re: 29

Guru - yeah I saw that a lot of them don't fill completely up. I'll have to get in some of those. I was mainly referring to the full 6 & 10 player contests. In retrospect, I was a bit harsh with my comments, as it's not really a big deal if some of the payouts are less than 90%. I think it's a solid idea for a game, doesn't cost an arm and a leg to play, and should be fun. I'm looking forward to playing soon.

To anyone that has actually played a contest already.

after drafting all your players for a contest, do you need to click the PLAY button at the bottom of the draft selection page before the contest begins to lock in your lineup ? On your FAQ page it says that your roster is frozen at the start time of a contest, but makes no mention of the PLAY button. So I'm unsure if I need to do that, or if just having my roster filled is all I need to do before the contest starts.

and if the PLAY button is not used to lock in your lineup, then any idea what it IS used for ?

Thank you for any feedback you could give me on this.

It locks in your lineup. At least, when I've clicked it, I'm no longer able to make lineup changes.

I don't know what would happen if you failed to click it. You might very well end up with a blank roster.

Re: 32

I clicked the PLAY button a few minutes before the contest started to lock in my lineup, but seemed like I was still able to make player changes after that (I clicked on a player in my lineup just to see what would happen, and it took me to the draft page and brought up the list of players for that position). Maybe you need to click it to get your lineup "registered", but you can then still make changes. Not sure, but at this point I don't think I'll risk NOT clicking it before the contest starts, just to be sure.

so how did you end up Pops ?

If C. Young holds on for the win, I think I'll finish 1st in one contest, and last in the other. I went with a different lineup in the 2nd contest I joined, so as to hedge my bets a little. bad idea. would have won both if I used the same lineup in the 2nd one. oh well, just getting my feet wet on the first day of play.

p.s. - I used McCann in my 2nd lineup also, but I did so bad in that one it wouldn't have helped if he hit 4 HR's instead of the 4 K's.

It's tough to say b/c the scoring is glitchy. Berkman has had pts given and removed several different times tonight. From the looks of it though, both the guys w/ Chris Young will finish in the money and the other guy who had Wakefield will.

If I had McCann's -4 removed and replaced w/ a 0, I believe I would finish third - again though, the scoring is glitchy.

just to keep this thread going - it was sinking down pretty far on the list.

somebody in one of my contests today picked Kameron Loe for his pitcher (against the BoSox at Fenway). Naturally Loe won, and the guy should finish in one of the top 3 money spots. Either the guy is a genius, or a _________ (fill in the blank)

don't know about anyone else, but I find this game almost as addictive as Rotohog. I've enjoyed playing, and it doesn't take too much time.

I played my first heads up contest earlier today. It was the "late games" format, with only 4 games to choose from. Even so, I was surprised (maybe I shouldn't have been) when I saw that my opponent and I picked the same player in 7 out of 9 positions. So it came down to his 2 "different" players against my 2. None of them got many points, but I'm happy to say I pulled it out.

I'd be interested to hear other opinions/thoughts on this new game, or about any good or bad experiences with this site so far.

My first few days were great, but i've stuggled the last few.

Really, most of that performance has been dictated by SP selection, and that brings up an issue I think is somewhat inherently flawed with the concept.

In "real" baseball, the saying goes, you're only as good as your next day's SP (momentum is your next day's SP...fill in your own version).

That said, if my lineup had Pujols, Utley, Mags, Vlad, Reyes, Beltran etc on it, I would be much better than just my next day's SP :-).

So, really, I think the format favors SP's a little much. Maybe a 15-20% reduction in SP points is warranted.

How do you accomplish this? For starters, 1 ER = 1 BB is a bit ridiculous. Also, maybe cut the win to 7.5 pts.

I'm still going to continue to play, as it's just too much fun. However, addressing the above and a few other issues would be great mods. to the concept IMO.

Re: 41 Pops

I agree that SP's carry too much weight. They often score half your points (or more) on a given contest. I think they should be around 25% of your score, not 50%. Also, the 1 ER = 1 BB is indeed a very bizarre ratio, which is part of the reason they score so high.

But as you say, it's just too much fun. So I will continue to play, and hope they make some adjustments in the scoring. However, I won't be holding my breath waiting for that to happen.

Re:43 Ender

That's hard to say. I cashed in the first 5 contests I entered, then didn't cash in the next 5. I'd say a majority of the players there know what they are doing, but there are definately some who aren't so good (you can see all teams lineups after the contest starts). Plus there are some contests that don't fill up all the way (for example, 6 or 7 entered in a 10 player contest), but they pay out the full prizes either way. So those are some nice "overlays". I'd say the game can be beat, but not enough of a sample size yet to be sure.

One minor problem I have is the strong temptation to hedge my FSL lineup versus my Rotohog lineup, so I don't have all my eggs in one basket. It's just so hard for me to play similar lineups in both, though I would probably have done better in FSL if I had. If you join, I'll be curious to know if you feel the need to hedge against RH (or other games) the way I do.
