0 Subject: Prefer good SP/bad team or mediocre SP/good team?

Howdy - Haven't posted in awhile.

I'm playing Yahoo head-to-head and lost Randy Wolfe to the DL.

Thinking of replacing him, I've narrowed the choice down to Buddy Carlyle (Atlanta) and Gil Meche (KC). Both are FAs in my league.

This leads to an interesting broader question, which is: When looking at SPs, do folks prefer to take mediocre or unknown pitchers like Carlyle on a good team or a known AL all star like Meche on a traditionally bad team?

Scoring is a factor of course, but typically we're talking wins, SOs, ERA, WHIP.

Any thoughts/opinions?

I tell ya, that KC team is proving it can put some runs on the board lately... so in that respect it may not really matter. I'd probably go with Meche.

I would always go with the more talented pitcher, unless the difference between them is minimal.

Meche has great GB/FB and K/9 rates this year, indicating he will continue to have success. He shouldn't hurt your ERA or WHIP and will help with K's. Taking a chance with Carlyle on doesn't seem worth it, particularly since wins are so hard to predict. Meche pitches deep into games, so that should help him get a few extra wins on a poor team.

I also bet KC's record in games started by Meche is pretty solid.
The reason they are a losing team is because they have little to no pitching in the rest of the rotation.

So if you think of it that way - the losing team vs. a winning team may be a moot point.

The team doesn't matter THAT much. Meche is decent end-of-your-bench fodder. Carlyle should only be started if you're short on innings and he's playing the Nationals.

Unless you're Matt Cain...

I have few complaints about Cain on my RIBC team.

I was referring to his wins.

right now I have Carlyle set to start for my ribc team tonight, but only because the padres offense has been so horrible lately. the only scenario I can imagine keeping him around is if he throws a no-hitter. I'm not even really comfortable starting him against the padres, but I'm short-handed in the SP dept.

How about these two I can't decide on?

Pettite vs. LAA
Guthrie @ TEX

I am under my innings limit... but I am not sure I am sold on either of these tonight.

Guthrie. But neither one is a "must get" even if you're down in innings.

Yeah...I can't see myself starting either of those guys in those situations.

I see some decent starts tomorrow. Bush @WAS is the best, but Baker @CHW, Marquis @PIT, Owings @CIN, Pelfrey @HOU, Shields @KAN, Maroth vs SFO, Garza @CHW, (Jeff) Weaver @OAK, and Germano @ATL look decent, to varying degrees. Or go a day ahead and get Lilly @PIT or Suppan @WAS.

A somewhat, kind of related specific case: Who has the higher potential upside for a keeper league: Jeremy Bonderman or Shaun Marcum?

Standard 5x5 scoring. I can't really find much of anything on Marcum. My gut says stay with Bonderman, but brain just says find out more and I'm having problems there.

re 12: Aren't all those matchups for today's games?

I love Bonderman, plays in a great pitchers park with a great offense behind him. Not in the AL East. And he's already been through his growing pains and should have a good solid run for a while here.

I love Verlander for the same reasons.

Khahan - I think I have Marcum in a league we are in. I'll trade you for Bonderman.

Make and offer, Hen. The worst I can do is laugh at you and say you have no made fantasy baseball skills! :)

Marcum's mostly been rated as an average prospect, but seems to have taken a big step this year. It sounds like the difference this year is his changeup. Some nights his changeup has been getting some good comments from the opposition, as well as being compared to Santana's (by his pitching coach mind you). He attacks the zone and seems to be changing speeds and eye levels enough to get away with it most nights.
