A guy from work just mentioned that the Braves traded Renteria to the Tigers for 2 minor leaguers.
Just found it
The Tigers have acquired SS Edgar Renteria from the Braves in exchange for RHP Jair Jurrjens and OF Gorkys Hernandez.
Renteria has one year and $9 million left on his current contract, which also contains a club option for 2009.
I feel like I've heard of Jurrjens but don't know why? Strange move by the Braves. I know they wanna clear payroll to get a CF and SPs but just dumping Renteria???

I tend to think this is actually a good deal for the Dodgers. They are only committed for two years, so its not like they have a big anchor tied to their future.
Sure its for $18 mil per year, but if they have the money, great. Its a short term deal on a guy who will give you .260 avg, 30 HR's, 110 RBI's, and cover a lot of the space in a big outfield at Chavez.

Wow. Per ESPN's "Blog":
All times ET 6:20 p.m., from Peter Gammons • The Tigers have won the Miguel Cabrera sweepstakes. Detroit acquired Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis for six players -- Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and three minor league prospects.
Woa Woa Woa...when did this happen? Don't go throwing these kind of rumors around from a weak source like that "Peter Gammons" fellow, he doesn't even write for a newspaper.
Very pleased with the move. I'm a big Andrew Miller Fan and am sad to see him go but you have to love adding Cabrera and I'm not so sure Jason Grilli would have gotten the deal done.
I can see Cabrera getting a nice long term deal from the Tigers and being a superstar here for the next ten. Kenny, Pudge, and Mags are coming off the books over the next couple years and locking up the young talent (Miggy, JV, Curtis, Bondo, a healthy Joel Zumaya (is there such a thing) etc) will be the Tiger's next priority.
Willis adds another quality left throwing armed starter to an already strong starting rotation. Although he had a career high in Earned Runs Averaged per 9 innings pitched, an excited Dontrelle Willis will flourish in the expansive confines of Comerica Park. Not to mention the strong offensive support.
Leyland likes to mix and match starting pitchers either by going Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, or going with a power arm followed by a soft tosser. Adding Willis gives Leyland another toy to play with in his rotation.
Tigers Weakness
Yep, you know it, I know it, your grandma knows it (she reads the paper, she really does know). The Tigers weakness now is the BP. Zumaya going down, takes the hardest throwing arm in the majors off the diamond for at least half the year and the off-season signing of Todd Jones assures the Tigers of having a closer with an ERA close to 5.
other than that, I'm thrilled.
Go Tigs!

It's going to be a big crap shoot of who's going to end up in the pen to start the year. So many people with chances and only a few spots locked down.

barilko, he was making like $12-13M last year and was horrid. The Braves refused to even talk to him for a new contract. So then he gets this huge raise? Was he on the juice in the past?

I don't know...I guess we will see.
I just think that a two year deal isn't too much of a committment for a guy like Jones. The Dodgers were very good getting men on base last year, but struggled bringing them in to score.
Andruw admittedly had a bad year last year, but if he were to have signed before the year started, I think he would have commanded the same amount of money per year, but for 5 or 6 years.
If the Dodgers are wrong, they are wealthy enough to endure a short two year contract.
That being said, are the Brewers wealthy enough to spend $10 million on a suspect Eric Gagne?

ALOT of talk on the radio today about the Indians going after Danny Haren. Basically, they would give up their best minor league prospect, Adam Miller, and Cliff Lee, Barfield, Gutierrez as well as other prospects would be available(Ben Francisco, Trevor Crowe).
I'd love it to happen but don't want to get too excited after the Jason Bay talks never turned into anything. The Indians might force something after the Detroit trade though. A front three of CC, Haren, and Carmona would be sick.

Reports on Toronto sports radio is that the Jays are close to signing David Eckstein.
That's too bad, I think almost everyone here fell in love with what Johnny Mac could do with the glove and were ok with having him as our starting SS in 2008.

I don't totally understand the Valverde trade. If you are going to go out and trade away a package for Danny Haren, shouldn't you at least have a closer lined up for your championship run?

Someone on ESPN said it was basically part of the trade because they were clearing salary to afford Haren since the prospects leaving were making very little.
Who's the favorite to close now? Lyon?

I believe Valverde has always been considered a high injury risk because of his throwing motion.
I'd say good move for the Cards in dumping Edmonds (thnx for the great seasons Jimmy) except that I'm not totally convinced that the Cards plan to spend the money that they saved. Could be slash and burn ala Florida Marlins. How can a team with such great fan support put out such little effort in fielding a winning team? Pretty sure I hate current ownership.

I really don't think its a bad thing to move Valverde while his value is high, but would hope they have a plan for the closer spot.
Qualls, Lyon, and Cruz all have a shot, but I would think they would want a proven commodity.

Josh Hamilton to Texas for Edinson Volquez and another minor league arm. If it weren't for Texas desperate need for arms, I'd say it was a great deal for both sides. Considering this clears the way for Jay Bruce this spring, I'd have to say it's a definite win for the Reds.

Rumblings I'm hearing are that Cincy's a little leery of Josh's ability to stay healthy (considering the hopefully always former addictions), and that with Narron and his brother no longer with the organization they're also understandably concerned that the "father figures" who helped him to adjust comfortably being absent could lead to less resistance to temptations and urges.
I certainly hope both worries are unfounded...I was living in Raleigh, NC when he was drafted #1 out of Athens Drive HS, and honestly thought his return was arguably the best story in baseball last season.

Here is the rest of the Prior story. San Diego is hoping bringing him home might help him out.
Buster Olney, of ESPN The Magazine, reports the San Diego Padres signed free-agent SP Mark Prior (Cubs) to a one-year deal with a $1 million base salary. The contract contains incentives that could make the value of the deal over $3 million.

Nice move by Chicago. Fire sale in Oakland! Fire sale in Oakland!
So where is Rich Harden going? Actually, I'm sure Beane's plan is to let him increase his value by pitching and being healthy (no small feat for him, sadly) and dealing him during the year.
A's also got OF Ryan Sweeney, kind of a tweener outfielder whose power has yet to really develop.

I'm a Sox fan and I don't like this deal at all.
1. We didn't sign Rowand. So we traded for a poor man's Rowand. 2. We traded our #5 pitcher for him. Ryan Sweeney was also quite good. Gio Gonzalez on the other hand was our top prospect.
I would rather have thrown some cash at Rowand and kept our 2 prospects. It's not like the Sox don't have the cash to toss around. Do it Kenny!

I think Swisher and Rowand are pretty comparable, although they have different skill sets. My team, by the way, traded Gio Gonzalez for Freddy Garcia and could now use Swisher (and Eric Chavez, who the A's would probably have thrown in).

Well, the more I've looked at it I do like it from Oakland's perspective. I didn't know De Los Santos was CHW's #2 pitching prospect, so that's nice.
But, keep in mind Swisher is one year removed from a 35 HR, 95 RBI, 106 run season and only just turned 27 years old. He has outstanding plate discipline and .375+ OBP's should be standard for him going forward. He's signed for 5 more years for only $26.75 million, so at under $5.5 million for 'prime' years, he has an attractive contract too. IMO, with the protection in that lineup and in HR-friendly US Cellular Field, a 30 HR season seems more than reasonable. I think his HR decline in 2007 was at least partially attributable to the lack of protection in the drab Oakland lineup.
Sweeney is young and talented, but is he really anything more than a Randy Winn type of outfielder at best? A little pop mixed in with some speed and defense? Nothing in his minor league resume suggests stardom although over these last 2 years scouts have always liked him.
