Subject: 2008 Closers Thread

- [561119313] Thu, Dec 27, 2007, 15:05
I was hoping to wait until after the New Year to start the potential closers thread, but damnit!!! I need baseball.
I'm listing team name then closers name. If its undecided I'll list them roughly in order of likelihood. And its all well and good to just cut/paste a table from another site. But that defeats the purpose of this thread. This list is based on review of multiple sources and is to help gurupies do what we should do best: Dominate our respective fantasy baseball teams:
Arizona Diamondbacks: Chad Qualls Atlanta Braves: Rafael Soriano Baltimore Orioles: Chris Ray Boston Red Sox: John Papelbon Chicago White Sox: Bobby Jenks Chicago Cubs: Ryan Dempster* Cincinnati Reds: Fransisco Cordero Cleveland Indians: Joe Borowski* (Kobayashi?) Colorado Rockies: Manny Corpas Detroit Tigers: Todd Jones* Florida Marlins: Kevin Gregg Houston Astros: Jose Valverde KC Royals: Joakim Soria LA Angels: Frankie Rodriguez LA Dodgers: Takashi Saito Milwaukee Brewers: Eric Gagne Minnesota Twins: Joe Nathan NY Yankees: Mariano Rivera NY Mets: Billy Wagner Oakland A's: Huston Street Philadelphia Phillies: Brad Lidge Pittsburgh Pirates: Matt Capps San Diego Padres: Trevor Hoffman San Fran Giants: Brian Wilson Seattle Mariners: JJ Putz St Louis Cardinals: Jason Isringhausen TB Devil Rays: Troy Percival Texas Rangers: CJ Wilson Toronto Blue Jays: BJ Ryan Washington Nationals: Chad Cordero
There are other updates I'll make but gotta get back to work. right now this is a work in progress.

Man that looks pretty. Are BJ Ryan and Chris Ray both ready?

Haven't determined yet who is ready/not ready. Over this weekend I'll probably have it completed with notations.
On a good note, I've been compiling the closers list for about 4 years now and this is the most settled the list has seemed in all 4 years.

Cubs closer is really up in the air...supposedly Wood, Dempster, Marmol, Howry will all compete for that role... Earlier in the offseason it was said Dempster would compete for a starting role but they have backed off of that recently.

Chris Ray out for entire 2008 season.
As for the Diamondbacks, I thought I heard that Tony Pena would be given a shot at the closer role. Rotowire said on Dec. 15th that Pena appeared to be the "front runner" in the race.

In Baltimore with Chris Ray out for the year the race is between: Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford or Danys Baez(onDL)
In Toronto some sites have Jeremy Accardo penciled in as the 2008 closer. Other options include Casey Janssen
TB has Percival but he is a few years removed from a great job. Al Reyes or even Dan Wheeler ae in line.
In Oakland, Street's name has come up in trade rumors. If he leaves look for Justin Duscherer to step back in. Allan Embree may also get a shot
Cleveland has the 2 mentioned above plus Rafael Betancourt
In Detroit, Jones IS the closer but I wouldn't be surprisd to see the equally inept Fernando Rodney get some chances. I just dont like either option.
Arizona - the first sites I looked at all had Qualls as the closer but just as many also list Tony Pena.
Colorado May see Fuentes go back to the closer role or may see Corpas keep it. My bet is that Corpas starts out there.
Cubs have Wood penciled in on some sites and Marmol as a likely back up.
Milwaukee: Maybe Derick Turnbow?
In San Fran Hennessy also seems likely.
In all I think there are very few teams unsettled. They would be San Fransisco, Milwaukee, Arizona, & Chi Cubs. The rest of the teams claim that so and so IS their closer.

Websites referenced for the above material includes espn, yahoo, rotowire, scoutingbook and rotoauthority.
Like I said, my lists is a compilation of others research. Gotta give 'em credit.

Thanks. Its not done yet. For now I feel comfortable with this list. But we've got awhile to go until spring training and thats when all hell can break loose. We'll keep updating it and I hope it can help some gurupies win their roto leagues (non-Khahan-participation category of course. :)
What other threads do we need? Somebody should get the sleeper thread/hot prospect going.

I think Accardo's a pretty safe bet, but if BJ is healthy, he'll be good.
I've seen Percival for TB on a lot of sites.
No issues in Philly. I love Brad Lidge.

Right now Ryan has had no setbacks. He has not stretched it out fully or faced batters, as fas as I have heard. Time will only tell. I would think best case has Ryan closing out of the gate. Hopefully All Star break at the very worst. I wouldn't mind seeing Ryan eased in as a lefty/righty platoon during April. As long as he makes it through the spring unscathed. A hot start from both him and Accardo could see Ryan expendable if an early-mid season shakeup is needed.

I always loved the Brad Lidge story about the joke on the planeride after that Pujols HR. Someone on the Astros got on the loudspeaker and did the whole "this is your captain speaking" routine and then added that if you look to your right at 10,000 feet you can still see the ball that Albert Pujols hit.

From ESPN via Rotowire:
Chad Qualls is currently penciled in for seventh-inning work, the Arizona Republic reports.
Fantasy Spin: Arizona manager Bob Melvin said the closer's role would be determined in a battle this spring between Brandon Lyon and Tony Pena. We wouldn't be entirely shocked if Qualls pitched his way into the mix, or at least received a handful of save opportunities when the bullpen needs to close out a lead on consecutive days, but if you're looking to scoop up the saves in the Arizona bullpen, you'll want to turn to Pena and Lyon before Qualls at the draft table.

B. Hoey is a sleeper for the Baltimore job. C. Marmol is being drafted first as the Cubs closer.
Nice thread, I'll be back.

Wood seems most likely in Chicago...
Marmol is probably least likely...they like him in the 6/7/8th inning stopper type role.

The Closer Report has Greg Aquino in the lead in Baltimore. Seems reasonable - at least as good as Walker, in my opinion. They picked him off waivers from Milwaukee.
San Fran, Tampa Bay, and Texas are three that I've got my eye on at this point.

From ESPN via Rotowire
Brandon Lyon will get the first crack at succeeding Jose Valverde as the Diamondbacks' closer, the Arizona Republic reports.
Fantasy Spin: It was expected to be a spring training battle (between Lyon, Chad Qualls and Tony Peña) for the job, but Melvin said he believes that defined roles in the bullpen are important, so you can bump Lyon's value up with the announcement. Lyon recorded a 2.68 ERA in 73 appearances last season, registering a major league-best 35 holds.
Perhaps rather than a Spring Training battle for the closer role, Lyon, Qualls and Peña had a Scrabble contest. Lyon knew all the two-letter words while Qualls and Peña asked if they could look words up in the dictionary during their turn. Of course Lyon won the battle!

On radio heard Marmols stats so far in Dominican League last week:
12 ip, 1 h, 0 er, 0 bb, 19 k = something to think about
Plus he really wants the job

Cubs update
''We'll have one guy,'' he said Wednesday. ''By the end of spring training, no question. Probably three-quarters of the way through spring training, we'll have one guy. We've got people here that are very capable of getting it done.''
That includes the guy who has done it the last three years. And Piniella didn't rule out the possibility that Dempster could return to the closer role if he can't win a spot in the rotation.
As for the three closer candidates going in, Piniella said veteran setup man Bob Howry ''in my mind can close, there's no question,'' and that both Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood have the ''electric'' stuff to do it, with Wood needing only to show enough durability to pitch three or four days in a row.
