0 Subject: 5x5 Keeper question...Who should I keep?

League: NL only, Traditional 5x5, Salary cap league (260 cap)

I can keep a maximum of eight players. Maximum 5 hitters or pitchers but total of 8.

Cost is a factor but not a huge factor as the draft tends to be relatively thin with 11 or 12 teams keeping 7 or 8 players. Plus I have a lot of players at great prices. I can keep any of the players for a max of three years but can trade in the 3rd and the clock resets (price does not)...so young players have value.

I had a great draft and made some big midseason deals last year and ended up with a lot of players well worth keeping. It is kind of unusual to end up with such good choices for keepers in this league. I have tried to pull off a 2 for 1 deal to make a big upgrade but no one is biting...I really can't get value back...I end up taking back a lot of money and strengthening another team much more than it helps me.

My candidates with prices:

Pujols - 26
Russell Martin - 20
Matt Kemp - 9
Carlos Lee - 33
Chris Young (OF) - 5

Matt Capps - 10
Yovani Gallardo - 5
Cole Hamels - 10
Tim Lincecum - 5
Pedro Martinez - 13
Brett Myers - 20

I am thinking of keeping:
Pujols, Martin, Lee, Young, Hamels, Gallardo, Lincecum...very undecided on the 8th player.

I keep Pedro and he is healthy I probably dominate starting pitching. Capps is ranked high this year and closers tend to be relatively expensive in this league. Kemp seems primed for a break out year.

I have two years eligibility remaining on Hamels, Young, Martin, Lee, Pedro, Capps, Kemp...three on Pujols, Gallardo, Lincecum...one on Myers(eliminate him)

If closers generally go for high prices, then Capps is a good choice at $10. Otherwise, Hamels seems like an easy pick.

With Gallardo, Lincecum and Hamels, you probably can dominate SP even without Pedro. Nobody biting at trading for him?

Pujols, Martin, Lee are a solid hitter core. I'd toss Young back, only because his average is going to hurt. SB's are important, but you are getting SB's from a non-SB position with Martin already. That is decent enough for a keeper list, just work on SB's a bit at the draft table, and maybe you'll end up with some SB's that don't hurt AVG so much? I know the HR/SB combo is really tempting, but the real value in guys like that is if they are decent in runs/rbi/avg too. Young is not, at least not enough to convince me to skip keeping one of your other valuable keepers, like Kemp.

I don't know how NL or AL only leagues play out with closers, but with 8 apiece I'd be hesitant to head into the draft without one. Capps isn't the best RP in the NL, but he's solid enough. I don't think you can head to the draft without him, unless that happens often enough year-to-year in your league and you're confidant you can bag a couple closers in the draft.

So, my list:

Pujols, Martin, Lee, Kemp
Hamels, Lincecum, Gallardo, Capps

Toss back Pedro, Young and Myers. Pedro you SHOULD be able to trade...

R9...thanks for the advice...very good reasoning.

A lot of people would take Pedro but the problem is getting something back better than I already have. It seems like I should be able to package Pedro/Young/one of the young pitchers for a more established pitcher like Peavy...but Peavy will cost me 30 and is it really that much of an upgrade? And I REALLY help the team I give the players too.

Almost any deal I do is going to be 3 for 1 and significantly help another team. I would like a player like Holliday in 3 for 1 but the team that has him came in first and is still strong but somewhat weak/expensive in his pitcher keepers so I do not really want to help him. I may try to pry Jose Reyes loose but that will be a tough sell...even though the manager who has him could really use 3 for 1 but I doubt he is good enough to understand it.

Can't trade for a draft pick? An extra 1st round pick is like getting a 9th keeper...

No trading draft picks...

I looked and looked and looked for a trade opportunity and I think I found something that works for both teams.

Hunter Pence...he is at $5...I think he is an upgrade over Young or Kemp...so I am going to offer Young or Kemp plus Pedro for Pence...I will also probably throw in Myers if that will help complete the trade. This team really only has Cain as a legitimate pitcher keeper so he could use 2 keeper pitchers...and Young/Kemp whichever he prefers is not too much of a downgrade on Pence. Should be win/win...I have a good trade relationship with this manager so I am crossing my fingers.

I like the Pence move and it will upgrade you and help what I'm assuming is a weak team.

I agree with your picks as well, and would have been ok with Chris Young as your eighth keeper. I think he'll improve on his average from last year, but probably only up to .250 or .260. Pence should be closer to .290 or .300.

I gotta ask, how did you get Pujols for so cheap?

The last place team from 2007 has Pence. If he makes the move I think it will give him a good shot for ~4th place next year and of course anything can happen.

We have four farmer spots 2P2H...your farmers start at 0 dollars. You can retain farmers until they get called up...from then you have a 3-4 year window you can keep a player. When you retain keepers at the end of the year all increase in price $5...but you can designate one players as a long term keeper and he remains at the same price. Pujols was originally drafted as a $1 player and through the years his owners have put the LTK tag on him enough that he is still only at $26. I traded for him midseason last year...Prince Fielder(15) and Jimmy Rollins(20)...both were on final year contracts so I needed to trade or lose them.

When you trade a player he retains price and the new owner then has a 3 year contract on the player. Eventually players get too expensive to keep and they get released to the draft where their prices reset to that years official/TSN price. Having a 260 cap does come into play and keeps some of the better players circulating through the draft. For example teams rarely keep closers unless they are cheap so the draft will have 9-10 closers available but I will probably keep Capps as having to only draft one will give me an advantage.

It is kind of a fun league. It has been running for ~15 years. Plays for decent money. Live draft...all local guys. Mostly weak managers.

Completed a trade for Pence...Kemp, Myers, and Francisco Cordero (Manager wanted Cordero(25) over Capps(10)? ok...

Still leaves me with Young and Pedro to try to work a deal. I also have Andrew Jones34, Furcal30, Lowe18...at normal to high prices to throw in.

Trying to now work a deal...Young, Pedro, Capps....for Peavy(30). Plus would throw in any of my other non-keepers. Do not really like taking on a $30 player but Peavy would seem worth it. Peavy, Hamels, Lincecum, Gallardo...would be a strong rotation in any league...unbelievable in a deep NL only. I would probably draft only one more starter.

Considering keeping Young and releasing Capps...just think Young has more longterm trade potential/value. I like the idea of having Pujols/Martin/Lee/Pence/Young hitting core for the next 2 years. Closers will be available draft day though it will be difficult to get two.

Still exploring a deal for Peavy but not 100% sure on it...hate taking on that much money and his price does not make him a longterm value. Then again it is hard not to take the best NL pitcher given the chance.

I think I would consider keeping Capps as well.
Trying to find Decent closers is very difficult if you dont have any.
Capps may not be top of the line but he is servicable at the price.
Of course if you get Peavy in a deal you could think about punting the save category and dominating the other 9.

Interesting development...I may have a one for one deal in the works...Pujols for David Wright.

Wright would save me $6 on my cap...

I am a little concerned regarding Pujols and his health. Plus a slight drop in production last year...I think the two players are almost equal.

I probably lose a few HRs, RBIs...gain a lot of steals. I like the idea of going into the season with 5 players that would contribute in almost every offensive catagory. Wright, Martin, Lee, Pence, Young...

Pull the trigger on Pujols for Wright?

Im a big fan of Pujols! But from what i read a few weeks ago, he had a lingering shoulder(? i think it was shoulder) problem and they speculated if it doesnt get better this season, he may even shut it down early depending on the teams situation.

I think I might have to do this one too...

That team is very, very impressive. I'm at the tail end of my own NL-only draft and there is no team as loaded as yours. I don't know how you do it.

What helped...

I had probably the best keeper vs price of keepers combo...so I had decent money to spend.

Our draft is not an auction...it is a regular draft and we use TSN published prices...in the end there were some decent free agents. We only had 9 teams this year so it left some decent players undrafted.

You are able to replace up to two DL players at the end of the draft with free agents. I picked up Hardy and Capps that way. Turned $1 DL players into them...kind of a hole in the rules...but most of the managers take advantage of it.

We only are allowed three moves all year...where you replace an active player on the roster and those cannot occur until after May 1st. You can replace players on the DL any time. I am really hoping Edmonds stays on the DL as I could replace him with Winn or Ethier. Guzman will be replaced May 1st with the best available hitter. Kind of a strange league.

Definitely have the best team right now...but I think my young pitching is still a little suspect. Have to play it out now.

Ah, that makes more sense. Here I am at nearly two AM looking at my squad which has Geoff Jenkins as the third outfielder, a guy we had to pay $20 to get, and then I gander at yours and think, WTF!!!! Am I that poor a manager?

That DL trick sure makes guys like Gallardo or Jason Schmidt look attractive. $1 DL replacements? Nice.
