0 Subject: RIBC 2008

- [330592710] Mon, Feb 11, 2008, 16:30

I have sent out 16 invitations for the 2008 RotoGuru Invitational Baseball Challenge. Thus far, I have 15 acceptances. I have yet to hear from Bash Brothers, who finished second in one of the AAA leagues.

As background, the RIBC invitations went to the top 6 in last year’s RIBC, plus the top three teams in each of the two AAA leagues, plus the winner of each of two AA leagues, plus me. One of the AAA leagues had a tie for 3rd place, and rather than trying to break that tie, I have invited both of those teams.

Here are the 16 managers in the 2008 RIBC:
StLCards
SANFORDORS
Building 7
Tosh
Blue Hen
Flying Polack
JL
slackjawed yokel
JeffG
Taxman
Bash Brothers (pending acceptance)
Uptown Bombers
RoboGuru
Coldwater Coyotes
dror
Guru

If Bash Brothers should decline (or not be heard from), then I will decide on one additional manager TBD.

A separate thread will be set up shortly to begin the process of filling Qualifying Leagues.

The schedule presents an extra challenge this season. The first two regular season games are in Tokyo on March 25-26 (Boston vs. Oakland). If we want to include those games, we should aim to finish the draft by that time. Using last year’s draft timing as a guideline (16 days), we should aim to begin the draft no later than March 7. We could, of course, opt to exclude those games and delay the draft for another week.

Do I hear any preferences one way or the other? Is a draft from March 7-23 palatable to everyone?

I’ll post a recap of last year’s rules and settings shortly. I don’t think we have a need to change anything for this year.

If we use option A I think we should first spell out what putting someone on IR means. The standard Yahoo setting allows you to keep a player on IR even after he is playing again, which to me isn't the intended use of IR.

Agree with Cards. We actually set up ESPN with a "manage your DL" link because of all the issues surrounding DL management. That's my biggest issue with option A, is that it really just seems like a loophole to get extra players.

You can keep the guy on the DL, but you cannot make any transactions whatsoever until you remove him from the DL. Plus if the guy is any good, why do you want to carry him on the DL and not use him? That situation can happen, but it doesn't usually last for a long time.

I think Yahoo's current system manages the DL just fine. If you have a player on the DL who is no longer on the MLB DL they won't let you make another roster moves until you release a player.

I suppose you could game if you really wanted to and you were happy with your current roster. I think the biggest issue is just having people log in to see their player is no longer on the DL.

With an additional slot for the DL, you still will only have 25 players on your active roster, and a 26th if one of them is sitting on the DL. There is nothing that forces you to activate that player once they leave the real MLB DL, but you will not be able to make any other roster transaction, until you do. Of course an active MLB player on your fantasy DL can produce no statistics for you.

My office league uses Yahoo and plays with one DL slot. If you have a player on the DL, in order to activate that player when they come off the DL, you must drop someone else from your roster to first create an open spot. The only loophole I feel is after the drop, and before you activate that player from DL to active roster, you can pick up someone else from the FA/Waiver pool who is on the DL to fill your 'open' slot. Then just swap that person to the DL slot with the one you are activating off the DL. One other trick people do is if they have no players on the DL slot, when the make a roster move for an add/drop, after they drop a player, they first pick up someone on the DL to fill their roster, then move that player to their DL, then pick up an additional player.

I just want to make sure everyone knows these tricks if option A wins.

We could add an amendment that for a player to be placed on the DL he must have been on your roster a preceding # of days.

We could also wait until April 15th or so to make anyone DL eligible. That way if you draft someone who you know will start the season on the DL, you don't garner an extra roster spot in early April when player movement is very volatile.

i personally dont see anything wrong with the current DL settings and see managers that take advantage of them in any way as smart...ur not doing anything wrong if u keep someone on DL when they are back...and ur not doing anything wrong if u pick someone up and move them directly to ur DL...ur being a savvy manager that doing what u feel will help ur team the most...

we all know the possible positives and negatives a team experiences by using the DL "incorrectly"...personally i feel they offset each other and it is up to that individual owner...

Post 27..Guru notes that an extra bench slot was added several years ago to address the DL issue.

With 16 managers, the pool of players available (not already rostered) is very limited. Adding a DL will be another bench slot for a number of managers because someone else not having access to a player does help you maintain status quo. When behind and needing to address a category short-coming, there will be 16 fewer choices.

Should a player go on the DL, if he is good enough, you will keep him. Adding a DL just gums up the ability to improve your team via FA players.

Not having the DL allows a manager to invest a bench spot in a player that can be helpfull 60 days later, rather than giving that players owner a free ride during the injury period. WE all know how many players hit hot streaks and cold streaks and there is definite value in playing the FA add/drop game based on players scheduled for Coors or Franklin.

Adding a DL seems to be completely w/o merit in a l6 manager league.

Agree wholeheartedly with everything Taxman said. It just makes the waiver wire thinner.

This is correct. The additional DL slot would reduce the number of free agents from 588 to 572.

The voting was very close. Prior to my vote, there are 8 votes to add a DL slot, and 7 votes to leave things unchanged. My preference would also be to leave things unchanged - following the reasoning outlined by Taxman in [52].

That leaves the vote as 8-8. Looking at the way people ranked their votes, there is no compelling way to use that as a tiebreaker. One could argue that (A) got more 2nd place votes than choice (D), but the difference is very slight.

Therefore, lacking any clear consensus for change, I'm going to decide that we make no rule change this year.

The next agenda item is to select the draft order. To set the order for this selection round, I need two ordered sets of the integers 1-16 from two different RIBC managers. The first will be used to resequence an alphabetical list of managers, and the second will define the selection order.

Meanwhile, three people still need to register for the draft at kafenatid.net. I know you all got your instructions, because they were in the same email as the Yahoo sign-up instructions, and the Yahoo league is full.

Here are the three who have not yet registered for the draft:

I'd be interested in trading down the first pick of the draft. If you can find something fairly equal on this draft pick trade analyzer I'll probably do it. My draft pick numbers are 1,32,33,64,65....etc.

I've been planning to activate the draft on Wednesday, with the first round untimed. I'll probably actually turn it on sometime tomorrow afternoon.

In recent Invitational drafts (for all three sports), we've been averaging about 24 picks per day. This baseball draft would require about 16 days at that pace, and that is how long last year's baseball draft required. So as long as we reach the recent historical norms, we will be in good shape.

Yes, but with a 2-round lag.
