It took some doing, but there's finally a lot of smack talk in Dirty Dozen. I bet there are a lot of bold statements to be made around here. In the mold of Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Beltran, let's get it started.

One of the Oakland A's and Texas Rangers will finish ahead of the Angels or Mariners in 2008.

The Kansas City Royals will win 71 games and finish in last place

The Tampa Bay Rays will finish third or better in 2008

The Philadelphia Phillies will win more games than the New York Mets

Jake Peavy will NOT start the All-Star Game for the NL

Thoughts?

My 10BOLD predictions

No player in baseball will hit more than 47 HR

The Detroit Tigers will finish 3rd in the AL Central behind the Indians and White Sox. Tigers will finish with 87 wins.

The rockies will not win the NL pennant. In fact they wont even make the playoffs.

The Angels will have 3 pitchers that win 17 games. Lackey, Weaver, and Garland

Grady Sizemore will finish in top 3 in MVP voting.

Johan Santana and Pedro Martinez will miss a combined 20 starts this season.

First No-hitter of season will be by Carlos Zambrano.

There will be no perfect games thrown in 2008

Cleveland Indians will win the World Series

Any Thoughts?

There will be no perfect games thrown in 2008 Is that really a bold statement? There have been 17 perfect games in 128 years of baseball.

I'll bet you a $20 donation to Guru the White Sox finish behind the Tigers.

Houston will win the NL Central, and Carlos Lee will finish in the top 3 for NL MVP.

Randy Johnson will win 20 games and get 200Ks.

Would predicting the entire season (wild card playoff included) qualify as bold?....

AL East: 4 teams over .500 with the Orioles barely breaking .300 ... Red Sox edge out the Jays and Yanks.

AL Central: Tigers sleepwalk their way to the title. Indians, White Sox, Royals, Twins round out the division.

AL West: Mariners are the team to beat. Angels will give them a run. A's younguns will have a strong second half to leave the Rangers in the dust.

AL Wild Card: Jays, Yanks, Indians, Angels in a 4 team wild card tourney. Halladay will toss a complete game gem to clinch the playoff berth.

ALDS: Tigers too much for the Jays. Mariners shock the Sox.

ALCS: Mariners shock the Tigers.

AL MVP: David Ortiz
AL CY: Erik Bedard

NL East: The Braves will win it, and Chipper will carry them. Definitely not a homer, but if he can play the whole year, it'll happen. Phillies, Mets will battle for the Wild Card. Nationals and Marlins won't be horrible but won't be good enough for this division.

NL Central: Brewers are another year better and will shock the Cubs. Reds will be better than the Astros. And the Cards and Pirates will take some lumps.

NL West: DBacks are gonna keep improving, should win this one handily. Dodgers will fall short of the Wild Card. Padres and Rockies will fight for 3rd and the Giants will struggle.

NL Wild Card: Mets should edge this one out at the buzzer.

NLDS: DBacks handle the Mets. Brewers take out the Braves.

NLCS: DBacks outpitch the Brewers.

NL MVP: Prince Fielder
NL CY: Dan Haren

World Series Champions 2008: Arizona Diamondbacks.

Miguel Cabrera will win the Triple Crown.

Barry Bonds will hit at least 30 home runs.

The Yankees will finish under .500, despite re-signing Roger Clemens around the All-Star break.

The AL wild card will not come out of the Central division.

The Oakland A's will lose at least 95 games. However, the Minnesota Twins will lose more.

The Rockies will finish fourth in the division.

Ichiro will miss at least 30 games due to injury.

Fukudome will hit over .300 for the Cubs.

Brad Lidge will be mentioned in a steroid/HGH investigaton.

Tampa's Evan Longoria will be joked about in a Desperate Housewives and/or Tony Parker context by every radio announcer in the American League.

- A NY Met will finally throw a no-hitter this year, but it will be someone other than Johan Santana.

- A second wave of steroid/HGH names are released as other whistle blowers go public.

- All Star game - AL 5 NL 4 11 innings, everyone panics that there are not enough pitchers if game goes longer.
- City of Tampa will actually catch Rays fever in 2008.
- Unlike 2007, there will be NO April rain or snow postponements.
- An all time low in total number of complete games in all of baseball.
- ARod - 50 HRs, 3 scandals, another MVP.

- CY Young - NL - Chris Young, AL - James Shields (Really Bold prediction)
- Rookie of year NL Bailey, AL Barton (not Joba, Buckholz or Ellsbury)

Milestones.
No
Bonds needs 65 to 3000 hits, needs 4 RBI for 2000.

NYY win wildcard with 89 wins.

NL East: Mets-Atl-Phi-Wash-Fla
Central: Mil-Chi-Hou-Cin-Stl-Pit
West: Ari-Col-LA-SD-SF

Atlanta wins wild card-playoff game versus Philly.

Baseball is so pathetic in the Bay Area that both teams move to Brooklyn into a brand new, first of its kind Frank Gehry designed baseball/basketball arena/stadium. Made of titanium, it's bright and bold, as well as light and strong!

The American league is not very compelling. Boston is the only team to win over 100 games. Detroit's offense is outstanding, their pitching is disappointing, but the rest of the league is snooze city. Everyone can't stop talking about the 80 win Tampa Rays. The A's and the O's fight for the worst record. Anyone who thinks the Twins lose 90 or more games is a MORON.

National League is chock full of suspense. The Cubs just miss the wild card play-in game by a game. Colorado is one game above the Dodgers and one game behind Arizona. The Brewers take out their 2007 frustrations on the Cubs and win by 7 games.

AL MVP: Miguel Cabrerra
AL CY Young: Matsusaka-san
AL ROY: Phil Hughes

NL MVP: For the second straight year, Matt Holliday will be the most valuable player
NL CY Young: Brandon Webb
NL ROY: Felix Pie

Fantasy:

This will be remembered as the "Year of the Injury" as four of the top 20 players miss significant time this year.

Ryan Howard hits over 55 homers
Jose Reyes leads baseball with 64 steals
No pitcher wins 20 games
5 pitchers save 40 or more games

The owners of BJ Upton, Robinson Cano, Justin Verlander, CC Sabathia, and Curits Granderson will all be very disappointed with their performances.

Albert Pujols will deliver a .330/38HR/115rbi performance without missing much time, as huge sighs of relief spread across the land.

Juan Pierre steals over 50 bases and all you haters can kiss his fleet little feet.

Next year the top 10 players rank will look like this:
AROD
Hanley Ramirez
Matt Holliday
Chase Utley
Ryan Howard
Miguel Cabrerra
Carl Crawford
Jimmy Rollins
Jose Reyes
Johan Santana

Pujols goes under the knife. David Wright stops stealing bases.

And just like last year [undrafted] comes out of no where and kicks ass. He'll be a tenth round pick next year!

Pujols goes under the knife. David Wright stops stealing bases.

Albert Pujols told a St. Louis television station that he's considering offseason surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his right elbow, a procedure that could cost him the start of next season.

Wright has a measly 14 swipes.

The Upton owners may be a little upset that he has not shown much power, but those 42 steals are alright.

Let it be said now so y'all won't forget over the off season: R. Cano is a frickin' BUM and it was obvious to me last year. Don't buy the NY homer crap of "he hit .300 and 7 homers after the All-Star Break." Hey, if you want your team to throw in the towel in April, by all means, draft that clown.

Verlander, Sabathia, and Granderson, right, right and right. CC, yeah, that's right, ask any AL-only drafter of that tub of lard if he was happy with that pick.

NL MVP: For the second straight year, Matt Holliday will be the most valuable player
NL CY Young: Brandon Webb

Just a few weeks on the DL is all that's needed to ruin what should have been a MVP season for Holliday. Webb is holding on by the skin of his teeth.

AL MVP: Miguel Cabrerra
AL CY Young: Matsusaka-san

Miguel is coming on strong, but is the worst of my four picks. My Matsusaka pick is easily the best of the few AL Cy Young picks above: Eric Bedard (ugh!), Verlander (nope), Lackey (not awful), Shields (actually would have loved this to be true).

I won't mention my POY picks or believing FLA was worse than WAS.

1. Every AL playoff team will have a better record than the 2 seed of the NL. There will be 8 AL teams with a better record of the NL Central champion.
This still has a chance of being 1/2 right. The Mets are 82-63 and the White Sox are the only AL playoff team that is behind them. And it's only a 1 game difference. The NL Central Champion won't be behind 8 AL teams though. The West Champion could be...

2. The Pirates won't have a pitcher on the staff that has more than 10 wins.
Paul Maholm is 8-8 right now. This stands to hold true!

3. Johan Santana will win the Triple Crown in pitching, but will not be a unanimous winner for the Cy Young.
Again 1/2 right. Johan will not win the Cy Young unanimously, but he won't win the Triple Crown.

4. 3 Players will have 20-20-20-20 (20hr, 20 SB, 20 2b, 20 3b) seasons. Sizemore, Granderson, and Reyes.
Sizemore needs 15 triples, Granderson needs 2 HR, 7 triples and 10 steals, Reyes needs 2 triples and 7 HRs. Dang...

5. Reyes will steal 100 bases this year.
Does he have 51 more swipes in him? No...

Stephen Strasbourg will not win 100 games in major league baseball.

I don't know if that is a particularly bold statement.

When you consider that there are only 37 active arms with 100 career wins, forecasting that milestone for a kid in college is rather iffy. Looking at the list, there are only two arms under 30 years old. Consider that Jeff Weaver has 96 and Sidney Ponson has 91 and one conclusion you can come to is perseverance is more important than actual talent. Then consider that Strasbourg will be given tens of millions of dollars before he throws his first pro pitch and you have to wonder if he would continue to press his case for a major league roster spot if by age 30 he has only met moderate success.

Furthermore, he will the property of the worst franchise in all of baseball for at least seven years, further hampering his chances of earning those fickle W's.

In conclusion, not that bold a statement.

I agree that it's not that bold of a statement. In any given draft class, there are probably, what, only 5 or so 100 game winners?

However, I will note that prior to 2008, Tampa Bay could have easily been considered the worst franchise in baseball. 162 games later, they had ended the Yankees 13 year playoff streak and relegated the World Champs to the wild card. The Nationals' fortunes could change rather quickly if guys like Strasbourg pan out.

You have a point, Zen et al.

So...

1. Stephen Strasbourg will never win 75 games in major league baseball ;)

More seriously... Strasbourg may be in MLB after 2014. But he will never be any kind of "impact" player after that. He will never win more than 10 games in a season more than once after that.

2. Stephen Strasbourg will be out of professional baseball by and after 2018, not counting some Todd van Poppel like comeback try.

NOTE: Pitchers with personalities like Strasbourg's and great stuff almost never become successful MLB pitchers. With his motion, he will almost certainly blow out his arm within 3 years. Add that to the general record of pitchers with great arms so young....

I mean, if you're going to rag on the guy... :)

I follow the Nats quite closely and I'll make a few bold statements of my own, particularly with the departure of Jim Bowden, who was the Nats' #1 problem. Seriously, go look at the moves he made (Cabrera, Olsen, Rauch, and Cordero oh my!).

1. The Nats will be within 10 games of .500 in 2010.

2. The Nats will be at, or above, .500 in 2011.

3. Stephen Strasburg will win at least 100 games in his career AND be top-10 in Cy Young voting in at least one season before he hits free agency.

Actually it is now 38, Zen.

Nope, Tom Glavine is out of baseball.

I would imagine the over/under on Strasburg's career wins is somewhere just north of 75.

What is Strasburg's "personality" and how did you learn of it, Toral? I don't know much about him.

Top-10 Cy Young before he's a free agent? That's bold.

I'd take the over on 75. I'm not quite ready to annoint him yet, but these highly touted guys do occasionally find success. After all, Kyle Lohse, Gil Meche, Joel Pineiro, Ben Sheets, and Jason Marquis are all over that number at age 30. He doesn't have to be Johan or even Webb to hit 75. I think that's pretty safe for Strasburg although you never know. I hope this thread keeps coming back.

Ah, I see. Don't tell that to Glavine.

By that standard you can take off Byrd, Morris, Trachsel, Mulder, and Pedro off the list as well.

Bold prediction: On September 27th, 2009, Matt Tuiasosopo will hit his first major league home run, on a 3-1 count in his second at bat of the day on a fastball from Brian Tallet to left-center field.

You heard it here first.

Glad you BUTTed this, BH.

I want to amend my prediction:

Stephen Strasburg will never win 87 games in MLB.

That was my exact idea at the time, but I succumbed to the attraction of the round number.

Tis a sad day.

Gil Meche announced Tuesday that he is retiring. He retires with a 84-83 record in 10 seasons with Seattle and Kansas City.
