I have no idea what to do with this trade. I have trouble making a decision because my dislike of Roberts hinders what I am looking at.
It's a keeper league, 6x6, 11 teams, keep 7 players. Right now my keepers are
1b Prince Fielder 2b Robinson Cano LF Carlos Lee UTIL Adrian Gonzalez
SP Scott Kazmir SP Fausto Carmona
By keeping 6 I get an additional pick in the 7th round before all the draft starts.
Send Robinson Cano, NYY 2B Send Scott Kazmir, TB SP Send 8th Round Draft Pick (6th pick)(83rd Overall)
Receive Brian Roberts, Bal 2B Receive Cole Hamels, Phi SP Receive James Shields, TB SP
Any and all help would be great. Thanks guys! |

If they're going to trade Roberts, please, lets get on with it. No matter who he gets traded to, he'll certainly have more value on any other team than the Orioles.
I have him in a keeper league, and I've been on the fence about keeping him for about 6 months now.

It really depends on how badly you need SBs but I do like the quality pitchers you're getting in this deal. I would pull the trigger.

average draft position, roughly:
cano is around 62, kazmir around 70, the pick you would offer is actually the 160th player taken, including keepers, right?
roberts 38, hamels 53, shields 113
I'd do it without much hesitation.

i think he was including keepers with his 83rd overall. So its the first round of the supplemental draft. Also since he kept all his keepers he loses the extra draft pick he gets. Makes the trade a little more even. Sorry can't really offer an opinion tho because frankly not even sure what standard 6x6 is and depends alot on who you might be able to get with the early supplemental draft picks

ah I see. it's the 1st rd pick he's giving up then? that's different.
seems like a strange trade really. a 2b for a 2b, an SP for an SP... would make a lot more sense if someone was trading a SS for a closer or something like that.

So you are trading slightly overhyped power (cano) for slightly overhyped speed (roberts). Then you are trading Kazmir and whoever you could pick pre-draft (because you would then lose this pick) AND your first rounder for Hamels and Shields.
To me cano to roberts is close to even in player quality. Just different stats. The question is this:
Does Kazmir and the loss of 2 top picks equal Hamels and Shields? In a league with 6-7 keepers, I'd have to say no. If you don't make the trade you get a pick of somebody elses keepers (perhaps even shields will be available) before others get to pick, then you get the 6th overall pick in the draft. The talent out there for t hose 2 picks is far greater than what you'll get in return in this trade.

Thanks for the help.
DPR is right the pick I am trading is the first of the supplemental draft.
Considering my team has approximately 0 steals based on projections the need for steals is great. I am already planning on drafting my OFs for speed and try to get some 15-20 SB guys in right and center.
I'll lose my first round pick in this deal, but I would also not keep Fausto. My severe and cripling man crush of him will probably have me draft him again in the 10 round. I have been talking to some managers in this league and it looks like the owner of Berkman isn't going to keep him. This is one reason why I want to only keep 6.
Oh and our 6x6 is R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS and K, W, SV, ERA, WHIP, BAA

Blankenship said he really like this deal. He says Hamels is greater than Kazmir, and Roberts is greater than Cano. So he says do it.

Do it. I think Cano is the most overrated player in the top 100. Roberts is considerably better.
Similarly, Hamels had a great WHIP last year. Kazmir is getting better, but has never shown that he has the stuff to get his WHIP under 1.20. Hamels will win more games.
Why would you not keep Fausto?

All the straight up player comparisons are fine. However everybody doing that is missing 1 important factor: The lost draft picks.
You are losing a supplemntal pick (which you are indicating guys like Berkman may be available) and your round 1 pick.
You can not make this trade keep your draftpicks and stll have Kazmir and probably get James Shields or better.
The draft picks make this not worthwhile for you.

How is Cano overrated? He was right around .300 20 100 100 last year which is pretty sweet from a 2B. With that said, Roberts stole 50 bases last year and if you have no speed as you said, that's huge.
Kazmir's second half last year was outstanding (2.39 ERA 1.14 WHIP .222 BAA 11.8 K/9) but Hamels is the better overall bet and Kazmir's early arm troubles this year worry me. Shields is not too bad himself either.
If you think Berkman won't get kept, then that makes this a tough decision, but you really have to know who will be there for you. If it's no one that special, then I'd pull the trigger on this one.

I think I am going to hold off on the trade. Straight from the Berkman manager's mouth: "I am not going to keep Berkman, but I am keeping 7." Why he would not keep Berkman is intreging and I didn't want to get into it with him (for fear of changing his mind) but it looks like I'll have a new RF.
Thanks for all your help and I am sure I will have another question for this brain trust. This league loves trades. (The basketball league with the same managers has had almost 35 trades so far this year.)

I think a good long-term strategy in a keeper league is to always look for chances to increase the talent level of your top keepers (so that eventually you end up with several 1st/2nd rounders). That's the kind of deal I'd be looking for. This one is too fuzzy, and like Khahan said, not worth losing the picks.
