0 Subject: RIBC 2008: Draft Discussion

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Tue, Mar 04, 2008, 21:37

The draft will be activated shortly, although the clock will not be turned on until after the completion of the first round (or Friday morning, if we haven't completed the first round by then.)

We will once again use a 6 hour clock. The clock will pause between 1am and 7am ET. I know that the pause times extend late for easterners and end early for westerners, but with a 6 hour pause, this still provides a 12 hour window for any pick which extends through the pause period, which should be ample.

If you time out, the draft will move on. Skipped picks can be made up at any time thererafter. If your turn arises and you still have an outstanding skipped pick, I will probably move the draft on to the next picker. If we get well ahead of pace, I may relax that stance. But hopefully it will not become an issue. This also means that people on the turn have a single clock period to make their first pick, or both picks will be skipped.

Although the clock will be set at 6 hours, we cannot make satisfactory progress if many managers use much of that allowance. We need to average about 1.5 rounds per day, so please do your best to keep up the pace. If we fall behind, managers who are chronically slow may be put on an shorter clock.

We will use this thread for logistical communications, to help others anticipate potential delays, to recruit someone to accept a queue, to announce or solicit trades, to coordinate changes in the clock for weekends, etc. Please check this thread regularly throughout the draft, as we will rely on it as the primary means of communication among RIBC managers.

Established draft etiquette is that no undrafted player names should be mentioned either here or in the rationale threads, and in the event of an infraction, should be edited out.

After two rounds have been completed, a separate draft rationale thread will be started. We will try to keep that thread on a 2 round lag. Therefore, after you make your pick in round 3, please immediately post your round 1 pick rationale, and so forth. I usually draft my rationales as I make picks, so that all I need to do when the time comes is copy and paste. I recommend that approach for everyone.

You may draft a player even if he is not currently listed on Yahoo. In that event, you will have the first rights to claim that player when he is listed, as long as you preserve that roster slot for him.

Once the draft is completed, you will no longer be able to protect a slot for any unlisted player. At that point, unlisted players will only be available through the standard Yahoo waiver/free agent process.

When you select a player, please list him at the position that you primarily expect to use him. Of course, these positions are not binding, and are only indicative of your anticipated usage. Yahoo position eligibilities will be used throughout the season.

The draft software allows you to set up a queue, and to make that queue available to any other manager who you authorize as a designated picker. Be aware that, as commish, I am automatically authorized as a DP for everyone. Your queue will not be visible to your DPs until it is your turn to pick, and you may specify whether the entire queue should be visible, or only the top name. However, if you do not make your queue "available", then no one will be able to see it when it is your turn. If you want your queue to be used, then please be sure that you have it set as available. If you do not want your queue used, then be sure to make it unavailable. If it is your turn and a queue is available to me, I will make that pick for you unless you have posted explicit instructions to the contrary in this thread.

In order to keep the draft moving at an acceptable pace, please make active use of queues if you expect to be unavailable when it is your turn. Recent drafts have gone very smoothly due primarily to the active use of queues.

The draft will last for 25 rounds. You are not required to draft a player for every position.

Slight problem here. I think Taxman put the wrong guy in his queue. I never heard of this guy, and he has the same last name as another guy on the same team.

I'm going to wait a bit and let him pick someone else if he wants. Or someone convince me to take the guy from his queue.

I am one of Taxman's DP's but am wondering if he wants me to admin his pick based on prior post [82] and my unfamiliarity with the player in his queue. I have his phone number, please stand by.

I'm looking to trade down in the 11th round, if somebody from the bottom of the order want to switch 11th and 12th rounders with me (mine are 11.05 and 12.12), shoot me an e-mail. (I'll leave in about 60 minutes)

A plea for some support!

Yesterday, when I made my 10.11 pick, I had to fill in 8 placeholders (from 8.03) before I could post 8.11.

Now, I'm about to do the same thing, getting ready to post the 10.11 rationale, but the latest rationale post is only 10.03.

Please - if you make a pick, post a rationale or a placeholder. And if you need to add a placeholder or two to catch up, please do that. We should never get 8 posts behind - especially two days in a row.

I'm going to bed. I left an 8-person queue. Hopefully that will be enough to move things along.

I'll catch up my rationales tomorrow, it's been a crazy couple days.

Our overall pace is right on target, at 1:02 per pick, even including the much-slower opening round. If we keep to this standard, we will finish on Saturday, March 22. I think there's a better than even chance that we'll actually finish on Thursday or Friday.

Wow I'm surprised we're on track. This draft seems to be taking a longer than last year.

I like to go to bed early. Last night I stayed awake an extra 60 minutes trying to configure my queue so the draft would keep moving. It's frustrating to know I could have just gone to bed and not worried about it.

If you're not going to be around for a while and for some reason can't leave a queue it's okay. But please post a message here and let us know. It seems like common courtesy for me.

I know that coldwater coyotes has been attending to some rather untimely and sudden personal issues, so he's been very good about leaving queues.

As commish, I can see that he does have a queue set up with at least one name in it, but he did not make it "available", so I can't see it. I wonder if he simply forgot to do that.

I will be without access for most of tomorrow, until around 8 pm at least. I was hoping that the draft could make as much progress as possible today to get it close to my next two picks. Doesn't look that way now. I will be sure to leave a lengthy queue by late tonight, but it will be extremely hard to do that. I don't think I could put 25 guys in there right now, for instance, and be truly happy about taking them them in rounds 14 & 15. But I'll wait and see, and hopefully everyone else is ready to pick and we get some good movement by late tonight.

If CC times out, that will be at 5pm. I will be able to make a pick for Bash from his queue, and then I'll make my pick. So Flying Polack, you should assume that you'll be able to pick by shortly after 5:00. RoBoGuRu, you should also plan accordingly. And then, 2 of the next 3 have also set up queues. So if FP and RoboGuru are prompt, we can go through a flurry of activity in short order.

Uptown, if it would be helpful, I can call you during the day tomorrow when your pick comes up, in case you want to be able to react. Send me an email if that is of any benefit.

Dave...I think you are correct. He forgot to flip the switch.

I did same yesterday in Poli draft (having left the internet for a bit and failing to activate the DP to see/select the 15 name queue). I mention this because CC follows me in that draft and he did activate me as a DP for his queue.

I was able to get KKB to look up the top name in Coldwater Coyote's queue, and I just made that pick for him, since everyone else has already finished their 13th round pick.

I'm pretty sure he intended to activate his queue.

Guru [207] - That includes our fast start, so we've been at worse than that lately. That's fine - I just get aggravated when it goes all day without a pick and then I have to pick at night, where I'm not as organized. No matter, we're almost done and I am exceptionally happy with my team.

[211] - You're dead wrong, BH. That average includes our SLOW start. Remember that we had a 22 hour gap near the end of round one.

As of post 123, we were at an average of 1:03 per pick. Now we are down to a cumulative average 0:56 per pick. So our recent pace has been faster than 0:56.

To be fair to BH, the last several days have been modestly slower than the several days prior to that.

But our recent pace has not been slow. As of Blue Hen's Round #22 pick, our previous 4 rounds (64 picks) were accomplished in about 56 hours.

It looks like we will finish the draft today. Tomorrow at the latest.

Please post your overdue rationales in this thread. You may post your rationales for rounds 24-25 here as well.

I hope to have all players loaded onto your Yahoo rosters by the end of tomorrow. Once they have been reviewed, we will have a 2-day waiver period, during which undrafted players may be claimed. Waiver priorities will be in the inverse order of Round 1 of the draft.

I know of at least one drafted player who is not yet listed in Yahoo - and there may be others. I will assign a placeholder player in those instances. Can anyone suggest some Yahoo-listed players who could safely be used for this purpose? These are typically players who have retired, or who are expected to be out for the entire season due to injury.

For a placeholder - The only one I could find who is listed on Yahoo is Casey Janssen who will miss entire season. There is also Rocco Baldelli who's baseball future is very uncertain.

Troy Patton is the placeholder for Johnny Cueto (RotoGuru)
