Red Sox threatening Japan boycott if staff isn't paid (Boston.com)
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell confirmed to the Globe that the team voted unanimously this morning not to make the scheduled trip to Japan or play its final spring training game against Toronto this afternoon unless the coaches, training staff, and equipment staff were going to be compensated for making the trip to Japan.
The players are adamant that this was negotiated in their agreement to play in Japan and that it has now been reneged.

Good for the Red Sox! It seems rare that the players would stick up for the coaches and the support staff like that.

Were they not going to be compensated? How is this different than any other game?

The players get paid. But the boycott is being threatened because no one else is getting anything.

Anything extra; usually negotiated payment terms make their way into a contract.

The boycott is being threatened because, according to the players, MLB agreed to pay the coaches and trainers the 40K as part of the deal to get the players to agree to play the Japan games, and now MLB is trying to back out of it.

40K is the agreed upon bribe that MLB has to give the traveling players so the MLBPA would would not block a trip like this, not previously collectively bargained. The managers, trainers, traveling personel, etc all get compensated based on their individual contracts. I agree that those traveling should get some kind of added compensation, but it is not like they are paying for any expenses on this trip out of pocket.

Maybe. But extra time away is probably worth something. And the point the players are making (I believe) is not that the coaches and staff are not out money. It is that MLB promised to pay them and are now trying to back out of it.

It appears resolution reached in Japan pay flap
By Nick Cafardo and Jackie MacMullan, Globe Staff | March 19, 2008
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- With the Red Sox back on the field playing the Blue Jays, it is assumed that the Japan trip boycott has been averted and a resolution has been reached. The Red Sox have not confirmed a resolution.
Before the apparent resolution, the Red Sox had refused to play the final spring training game in Florida and threatened to boycott their flight to Japan for their season openers over news that their coaches and other staff would not receive a stipend for the trip.
The players were adamant that a $40,000 payment for coaches and staff was negotiated in their agreement to play in Japan and that it had been reneged. Third baseman Mike Lowell confirmed to the Globe that the team voted unanimously this morning not to make the scheduled trip unless the situation was rectified.
''When we voted to go to Japan, that was not a unanimous vote,'' said third baseman Lowell, "but we did what our team wanted us to do for Major League Baseball. They promised us the moon and the stars, and then when we committed, they started pulling back. It's not just the coaches, it's the staff, the trainers, a lot of people are affected by this.
"I'm so super proud of this team. When we put it to a vote it was unanimous, we're all in agreement that we're not going to put up with this.''
The Red Sox stuck to their word and initially did not take the field for today's Sox-Blue Jays game at City of Palms Park, which was slated to begin at 12:05 p.m. but did not get underway until more than an hour later. Team captain Jason Varitek told reporters, "We're not playing until this is resolved."
Baseball spokesman Rich Levin said the sport's lawyers were dealing with the situation.
"We're trying to work it out," he said.

$40k each. Give me a break. Where do they think that money originates from? It's part of the Mount Everest sized pile of dollar bills they extract from the fans every year.

Extract from the fans? I've never given MLB one single dollar unless I thought I was getting at least as much back in entertainment.

The Sox did something good. They saw the coaches and staff (aka the little guys in the system) getting screwed and stuck up for them. They even up some of their own cash (given in the grand scheme of things, that may have been a in the bucket, but its still their cash that they did not have to give up).
Makes me proud to say I'm a Sox fan. This and the Yankees thread about the Va Tech Memorial (that was a great story) should be the kind of stuff we hear more about. Not steroids or drunk driving.
