I guess the idea that Bonds will probably demand/command $15mil + to play and then only get 1/4 to 1/2 the season in before going to his trial has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with teams not wanting to sign him.

Or his great locker room presence.

Maybe by July for an AL team with the 'right' injuries and a chance to make the playoffs.

If he is healthy and a team needs the bat...okay, just trying to add something other than BUTT to get rid of the spam posts I am deleting.

I am not sure why any team would want Bonds at the price he wants...he really is only a DH these days, bad locker room presence, poor addition from a PR perspective.

"Bonds could make a potent designated hitter for an American League team. He has 762 homers -- seven more than Hank Aaron's previous mark -- and would be a box-office draw for a team with slow ticket sales" espn link

Personally I could see him having the oppositive effect...I really do not think fans like him or have much respect for him. I certainly would not be buying more tickets to see him play. I would think a majority of fans would not want him on their team.

Collusion is when teams get together and agree to collectively do a certain action (or in this case, inaction). But when everyone happens to agree with something (such as "water is wet" or "Bonds is poison") there is no collusion.

with all the issues surrounding Bonds the only contract that would make sense to me would be one loaded with incentives. no way would I offer him a flat 10 million.

News reports have AZ and Boston having "internal talks" about the possibility of signing Bonds.

He's not getting any offers. I'm sure he'd be down for an incentive laden contract but 0 teams have offered him anything. The guy can still hit(hmm, .480 OBP I think a lot of teams could use that) and I'm guessing he's a lot more humble and driven than he was 1-2 years ago. It's dumb that some teams lacking a DH or outfielder would pass him up.

He is a PR nightmare that would change the focus from the team to him. Pretty distracting. Also with his criminal issues (albeit delayed) ahead of him--is it worth all the energy it would take to bring him in (along with his demands to be treated preferentially i.e the lazy boy chair in front of his locker)? Apparently the answer thus far has been a resounding NO.

What happens if the Barry Bonds experiment doesn't work? Suddenly your owner and GM are the guys who sold their souls for nothing and have lost all trust with the fan base. Dodger fans are still talking about the Piazza trade ten years later. I imagine bringing Bonds to town would be like that, except worse.

Why would Bonds suddenly be more humble than he has been for the rest of his life?

I'd be happy that my team at least tried to get better. Anyone that thinks their team would be worse with Bonds is insane.

Hell, the Giants are only 6 back. I'm sure they'd be a lot closer to 1st if they would've resigned Bonds.

bmd, I get where you're coming from, but the negatives far outweight the positives IMM. Think back to when he was in pursuit of the record. He was jeered EVERYWHERE except for SF. Now SF doesn't even want him. They are going in a different direction anyhow and want to develop their youngsters. I can't blame ANY team for not signing him. Peter Gammons said that he's done. He certainly knows more about it than any of us. But who knows?

Sometimes there can be a lot said for addition by subtraction.

I think that they are that close has much more to do with the leader being under .500.

ok, I'm no Bonds fan, but why would the Yankees choose Sexson over Bonds. Sexson is Horrible. I know Sexson was dirt cheap (still more costly than he's probably worth) but I kinda doubt that Bonds would ask for much money at this point.

Sexson has good numbers against lefties, which will allow them to give Giambi those days off. Its a good left/right platoon.

Oh, plus he's a cheaper price and less of a clubhouse cancer.

From everything I've heard, Bonds is still asking for 20 mil. And if they don't win the world series after signing Bonds...

I read where Bonds was willing to play for the league minimum, and that he would donate that to charity if that would help get him signed.

Yeah, he's willing to play for league minimum. Where did you hear that he wanted 20 mil, Blue Hen? Your source is way, way off.

There is no getting around the fact that the MLB owners have black balled Barry Bonds. I am not a Barry Bonds fan, in fact I root for the LADs, but it bugs me to the nth degree that the owners who are protected by congressional exemption from antitrust legislation are able to get away with this.

loki, I wouldn't want the headache and problems he'd bring to my team. There is more negative than positive IMM. Therefore, I wouldn't characterize it as "black-balled." I think he's done it to himself.

I don't know why this myth is so deeply ingrained in your brain, Ref. I've heard from many sources that most of his teammates really enjoyed having Barry on their team. There were exceptions: Jeff Kent, for example, I'm sure there are others, but by and large, most players liked him. The press, management, on the other hand, not so much.

Bonds can probably best show that he's not a prima donna by playing a little minor league ball at this point, which will keep him in game shape.

Thanks loki. Thought it spoke volumes when they signed Sexson to be their DH. But never underestimate a Steinbrenner!!!

NY Times and NY Daily News indicate that the NYY are going to pass on Bonds. DH is crowded on this team with expensive guys like Posada, Damon and Matsui...all fielders who are hurt in one way or another...There is just no room for Bonds unless all of these guys get seriously hurt (and two of them are not so far off from that!).

I think Bonds has really hurt himself for not sucking it up and signing with an independant league like Rickey and Jose did. At least then he would be able to say he is in shape and game ready.
