Out of curiousity what was the point of this thread?

- The Yankees have a monsterous payroll? ($70 million more than 2nd place)
- Giambi makes too much? Or Mussina? Or Pavano?
- The Marlins pay too little?
- The Marlins can't pay players because their junkpile stadium can only draw 1500 fans a day?
- Hanley Ramirez is a complete bargain?
- Luis Gonzalez still plays?

I'd say any and all of the above are good reasons for this thread. Let's not single out the Marlins.

The Marlins are last on the list--why not single them out?

The Yankees are first on the list by a wider margin. Why not single them out?

Ok, maybe I misinterpreted. I thought he listed the Yankees individual salaries to show how cheap Florida was.

My main argument in favor of Florida is that if you have ever watched a baseball game in that football stadium you would realize why people won't come in the middle of summer when its 95 degrees out. That place is a wretched dump. Hopefully with the new stadium all but assured they will have a chance to draw people with an air conditioned building.

Forbes estimated that the Marlins posted $43.3 million in operating income last year. That operating income included earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. How did the Marlins rate in terms of operating income – a measure of profit – compared to their other 29 counterparts? They were first with the Dodgers in second at $25.5 million, a difference of 41 percent.

My point was to spark discussion. And yes, the phrase "Farn will have a field day with this" did cross my mind.

Interesting to see Arizona so far down. Let's do this again with 2008 rosters and 2012 salaries. They might be higher.

My biggest complaint is what is the point of revenue sharing? I dont think it is to put the money in the owners pocket, i do believe you are supposed to be using it to build a better team. The Marlins are not the only to be doing this either.

Oh I agree. I hate the fact that the Marlins pocket profit. Of course if they reinvested another $20 million they still wouldn't compete with Atlanta, NY, or Philly but its a show of good faith at least.

I really long for the day when I can fly to Miami and see my team play in a nice stadium with air conditioning and field a competitive team. I am praying that just a few years away.

Thank GAWD these salaries come off the books this year:
2. Jason Giambi 23,428,571
4 a. Andy Pettitte 16,000,000
4 b. Bobby Abreu 16,000,000
10. Mike Mussina 11,071,029
11. Carl Pavano 11,000,000

$77 mil right there.

Okay, they might add $15-ish on Sabathia or Teixeira, but that's a load of change coming off the books.

I don't think there is much chance of the Yanks getting Sabathia, but there will be plenty of overpaid vets out there for the picking. Plus a number of guys will be getting more money next year automatically, only some of whom deserve a raise: Damon, Matsui, Hughes, Posada, etc. And some players have contracts (like Wang) who are sure to be re-signed at higher amounts.

That gap at the top should come down notably in the next two years.

Damon, Matsui and Posada do not get a pay raises in 2009. But ARod does get a $5m raise and Cano gets $3m. As a 2nd year player, Hughes might get another $150k.

Matsui and Damon both come off the books after 2009.

I doubt they go after Sabathia or any other starting pitcher. Teixeira is a possibility and at more like $20m per, figuring on a bidding war with the Mets and that he's a Boras client. Boy would I love to see Duncan make a case to inherit the full time 1B job this year. Wouldn't be such a bad gamble since they're probably considering working in Posada at 1B by 2010 anyway.

Abreu might get re-signed, especially if they don't get Teixeira. But probably not at $16m. Either way, expect them to shed the $77m listed in post 12 and then subtract something like $12m - $32m to sign a 1B and/or RF.

Figure on the Yanks to reduce the payroll by $37m - $57m next year and then possibly as much as another $25m after 2009 (depending on how many young players work out by then).

Wang will still be arbitration eligible in 2009. He won't get a big raise until 2011 unless the Yankees decide to lock him up before then.

Bump

The Marlins have reached an agreement with Hanley Ramirez on a 6 year, $70 million deal.

New stadium going to pay dividends? I hope so.

When I saw the news, I thought of you, Farn. I guess this a good step for the franchise. And it seems like a bargain at the moment.

Ya know, for a guy who lived in NY and now AZ I really am a Marlins homer. :)
