0 Subject: Trade question

I don't normally ask these types of questions, but this is in my favorite league and I'm pretty torn on the trade. 6x6 14 team NL-only keeper league (OBP and IP added to the traditional 5x5). C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, 4 OF, 5 SP, 3 RP, and 7 B.

I have independently negotiated the following 2 trades (prices would be to keep next year and inflate $5 per year)

(1) Howard ($25), Jose Bautista, and Ray Durham --> Haren ($20), Pence ($15) and Jose Castillo

(2) Hamels ($20) and Alou --> Zimmerman ($21) and McCann ($16)

I'm not as concerned with the keeper values, as I already have some other outstanding keepers (Fielder for $16, Utley for $26, and Lincecum for $11). My main concern is trying to catch the juggernaut in 1st in our league. I'm probably the 2nd or 3rd best team right now (like I said, the top guy had amazing keepers and a near-perfect draft, plus Cueto on his minor league roster). Anyway, the trades would leave me with the following.

McCann (moves Iannetta to bench)
Fielder
Utley
F. Lopez
Zimmerman
Keppinger
J. Castillo
Victorino
Pence
McLouth
Winn

Haren
Oswalt
Lincecum
RJ
Maholm/Pineiro

F. Cordero
Fuentes
Lindstrom

I lose all my bench depth, but stack my team pretty well for this year. My instinct is to pull the trigger on both. Hamels --> Haren is basically a lateral move. I might lose a few K's, but gain some IP and have less of a health risk. Durham and Baustista still have some nominal value, but both are sucking and that could change fast. Going from Howard + Alou --> McCann, Pence, and Zimmerman seems like a win, especially since I am again reducing my risk.

Thoughts? I'll probably pull the trigger, but I'm looking for some fast assurances before I do since I'm giving up the 2 best players (Howard and Hamels). Most trades I try to trade 2 lesser players for a better player, but since our league is so deep I thought I'd try a different approach.

Thanks.

I agree with your assessment and it looks good to me without knowing if you are targeting specific categories or not. Your top 3 pitchers look real good but overall your team will have a lot of youngsters that may tend to slump off and on.

I would go for #1 but would not do #2. This early in the season if you can have a rotation of Hamels, Oswalt, Haren, Lincecum...you ride it. Let the K's, era and whip build. Then once you've earned the points in this categories and have a comfortable lead trade one of them to offset another weakness. Aside from that I think you are on the losing end on that particular trade by a good margin. Zimmerman is highly regarded but so is Hamels...and Hamels is living up to expectations. Can't say the same for Zimmerman.

I accepted both trades, thanks for the comments. My thinking on trade #2 - I wanted to replace some of the offense I lost in trade #1. If I didn't do trade #2, then I would have another hole in my offense and Iannetta would still be my starting catcher, getting 7 at-bats a week.

While I agree that it would be great to havea rotation of Hamels, Oswalt, Haren, Lincecum, and RJ (with Maholm and Pineiro on the bench), I think it would be overkill. Heck, I probably have one of the top 3 rotations even after trade #2 (at least as long as RJ is healthy). But while I was building up a nice lead in WHIP and K, I would have been falling way behind offensively. And Hamels is a known injury risk, so if I held him I could always end up getting burned.

I think the trades can potentially help all 3 teams. The guy that is losing Zimmerman/McCann had LaRoche (1B) and Towles on his bench. The other guy had lots of open spots in his lineup he needed to fill, but had some pitching depth to deal Haren.

My favorite part of the trade is that I really minimize my risk. Alou, Hamels, and Durham are bigger health risks than any of the guys I picked up. Bautista and Durham might lose their jobs.
